Newspost: Not-So-Secret Anti-Spam Weapon Completed
I have modified the software today to be able to block the actual endpoints of the shortened URLs usually included in CP spam. This should help a lot with slowing down the spam; the spammers have infinite URL shorteners but so far they all point to the same few places. We will start checking endpoints and adding them to the blocklist soon. Hopefully browsing will become less stressful.This modification has also been submitted as a pull request to the main vichan repo. Hopefully they pick it up and other sites can start using it.

Even after adding multiple new janitors, getting one or more CP spam posts per day was just, still too much. It limits who will even be willing to visit my imageboards in a possibly traumatic way, and having it appear so often puts me at legal risk.

I got it working and it's gonna be here to stay until I can think of something better.

At least one user reported that reCAPTCHA blocks their entire ISP, but they were able to get around that by enabling the uBlock Origin browser extension, strangely enough. If I can get the software updated there is an alternate provider, but there are issues with that such that it is going to end up being a major surgery I have to set aside some hours for.
I have the captcha set at the lowest difficulty setting for now. If you are having trouble posting regardless, you can report it to me at seisatsu@uboachan.net, though I can't guarantee I can do anything.
I'm sorry again that I had to do this, and I hope it doesn't significantly impact the experience for most people.

For best interest in the userbase's safety and privacy, could there be any way we adopt or at least *consider* IRC or XMPP? It's not unknown to people that Discord is running a data mining operation and doesn't really respect the user's privacy or freedoms. The problem with IRC was that users had no way of knowing what conversations ensued due to lack of backlog support. Implementing backlog support via a bot can solve this issue quite easily.I'm not requesting or expecting anything, but I just thought it would be neat to plug the information out in the open for discussion.

So, what happened since my last newspost? Well, Uboacraft has been back online for a while, so that's neat. The Dream World MUD got some major updates last year, so check that out if you haven't already. And, there were also a few new scanlations, though activity has tapered off for the last while. Discord remains our most active community by far, though mostly entirely separate from the board community. And, I am still the only active board staff member. Thankfully there hasn't been much trouble lately.
I guess the biggest thing has been the rules update. I'm glad that went over as smoothly as it did, and I regret not doing it years ago. My sticky in /sugg/ has more to say about that. Still, I feel like it's too little too late, and we lost a lot of good members early on that aren't going to come back. But, there's only so much you can gain by looking backwards, so I try not to think about it too much, and to just be happy with the choices I've made more recently.
Also! Sushichan is doing really well. We took in another imageboard that shut down last year, and there's actually a lot of activity. So, that's worth checking out if you like comfy spaces.

Hello. It's good to see that some of you are still here. Apologies for the very late birthday post; losing my laptop may be a decent excuse but honestly I am just a little bit worn out. My birthday is about a month before Uboachan's, and I turned 30 this time! And I have a full time job now. So, I guess feeling tired is unsurprising. But, on to the real news.So, what happened since my last newspost? Well, Uboacraft has been back online for a while, so that's neat. But at the same time, I've been there about two times and everyone in it was kinda pretentious so maybe it acts as a good containment center. Everyone who downloads the game from here will have to fix this by themself.

The RPG_RT.ldb database expects a file called "FCM,QALL.xyz" (46 43 4D 82 51 41 4C 4C) but the file's actual name is "FCM2ALL.xyz" (46 43 4D 32 41 4C 4C)
All needed to do is to edit the filename or the database entry so that they are identical.
Only problem I see with this is that the download here contains an installer. And in the installer the file contents and even file names are compressed so this cannot be solved by a simple change with a hex editor.
So, if someone here is able to generate the installer from the translated version I'd highly recommend doing it.
This way this problem will be gone onceAnd4all.xyz

Is there anyway to get a revival of the "community ad thread" that's linked to on the rules page? I went to follow it and got a 404. There is another site I would like to "plug" so to speak as I know multiple people that post on there. post here and on sushigirl. Late last year, I moved Uboachan to a new server after another website hosted on the same server became infected with viruses. Scans and investigation showed that the infection didn't spread to any other sites, but I set up a new server to be safe. It's needed to happen for a while now anyway; there were software upgrades that couldn't be done in-place on the old OS. We are now running the latest version of Debian, and we've switched HTTP services from Lighttpd to Nginx. Unfortunately, I haven't gotten the Uboachan Archive running with Nginx yet, so that's still broken, but I'll get around to fixing it.
Did you think our co-op scanlation project with Patchy Illusion Team was dead? Think again! About a week ago I bought 10 raw Yume Nikki fan doujins straight from Japan with the help of a generous donor, and shipped them to Patchy Illusion Team's lead scanlator Chesir, who should be receiving them some time in the next few weeks. After that he should have enough material to keep the team busy for a while, while all of the doujins are translated and released. Chesir may need some additional help with this batch, and if so he'll post in the Scanlations Project sticky on /yn/. Expect some teaser photos as well once the doujins arrive from overseas.
The Lost Cities Minecraft Server is also back from the dead, sort of. The map became corrupted, and when recent backups were restored those eventually became corrupted too, leading to the server staying offline for a few months. Eventually we decided to reset the map completely, and hope that the same issue doesn't happen again. However, we're still running the same old plugins, so it should be a similar experience. If anyone's interested, I may be able to package up a working backup of the old map for download, but it's a bit out of date.
Development for the Dream World MUD is on hiatus, but hopefully only for a few months. The server is still up and running, and more features are planned for the future.
Writer continues to be in charge of the moderation staff, while I keep the server and website up and running.

It's needed to happen for a while now anyway; there were software upgrades that couldn't be done in-place on the old OS. We are now running the latest version of Debian, and we've switched HTTP services from Lighttpd to Nginx. Unfortunately, I haven't gotten the Uboachan Archive running with Nginx yet, so that's still broken, but I'll get around to fixing it.
Did you think our co-op scanlation project with Patchy Illusion Team was dead? Think again! About a week ago I bought 10 raw Yume Nikki fan doujins straight from Japan with the help of a generous donor, and shipped them to Patchy Illusion Team's lead scanlator Chesir, who should be receiving them some time in the next few weeks. After that he should have enough material to keep the team busy for a while, while all of the doujins are translated and released. Chesir may need some additional help with this batch, and if so he'll post in the Scanlations Project sticky on /yn/. Expect some teaser photos as well once the doujins arrive from overseas.
The Lost Cities Minecraft Server is also back from the dead, sort of. The map became corrupted, and when recent backups were restored those eventually became corrupted too, leading to the server staying offline for a few months. Eventually we decided to reset the map completely, and hope that the same issue doesn't happen again. However, we're still running the same old plugins, so it should be a similar experience. If anyone's interested, I may be able to package up a working backup of the old map for download, but it's a bit out of date.
Development for the Dream World MUD is on hiatus, but hopefully only for a few months. The server is still up and running, and more features are planned for the future.
Writer continues to be in charge of the moderation staff, while I keep the server and website up and running.

The issue with banning something(or censoring it) because it makes people uncomfortable, is that anything can make anybody uncomfortable. What about what makes me uncomfortable? What if I don't like candles, or horses. What if I have a phobia of insects, does that mean insect pics should be spoilered? Why should what makes "some" "uncomfortable" be prioritized? As for the majority of users being bothered by it, I haven't seen that. 1, 1 post with loli in it has been reported folks. I wonder where this mysterious outrage is coming from, because I just see it. Was there a vote, because I didn't see one.
The fact of the matter is there's absolutely nothing reasonable about this rule change. It is utterly selfish and shows a blatant disregard for the principles of this site or what makes it great.

Please excuse me, I really am trying my best to keep myself contained, but this is the kind of stuff that gives me aneurysms.
Right now, I just want more clarification for the users and mods in terms of rules and enforcement when it comes to images. While I hope things will pan out for the better even though that's not guaranteed, as things are now, it can't carry on.

I never wanted the boards to turn out this way. I just didn't know what to do. After the moderation team dissolved, I thought that if I just let discussion continue on its own, and let things operate mostly unfettered, and only stepped in to act on the most egregious situations, the site would stay mostly as it was. I never thought that the atmosphere would degrade to this extent. It's happened so slowly over the past two years, that I guess it was easy for me to rationalize that nothing had changed all that much.
But stepping back and looking at things now, I can't really say that Uboachan is still the dark-but-chill hangout that I had idealized. Threads about topics as innocuous as the weather are derailed into flame wars in short order, and attempts at moderation are met with harsh criticism, suggesting that in the absence of consistent vigilance, this sort of perpetually destructive atmosphere has become the expected norm. Conversation has turned sour. This is not an isolated incident, but something that is happening to threads all over the site. The low-key rage that rests in the background of most imageboards has risen to a fever-pitch, making calm and enjoyable discussion all but impossible. I don't think it's something I can fix just by banning a few users, and I don't think that the current rules would clearly justify doing so anyway.
I didn't want Uboachan to become a place where people actually enjoy being hateful. The hate and anger were supposed to be all tongue-in-cheek, just part of the joke, the colors of Uboachan's unique, dark sense of humor. I feel like a lot of our users don't get the joke anymore. We ended up attracting actual racists, evil wizards, inquisitors, the criminally insane, elder gods, and other unsavory characters, exactly the kinds of people I wanted us to avoid. This isn't just another imageboard, above all else it's a Yume Nikki fansite. At least, it was supposed to be.
Honestly, I haven't had the time and energy to put into this place lately. I'm not a NEET anymore. I've been going to college full-time, looking for a job, and trying to build my own future, all while dealing with an all-encompasing social depression that has made me more introverted than ever. I don't talk to people as much anymore, and often when I try to browse Uboachan, my eyes gloss over the posts and I don't really absorb what I'm reading. I really feel like I haven't been paying attention. As sad as it makes me to say this, I'm not the guy for this job anymore.
So, effective very soon, I will be stepping down. Our long-time staff member Writer, who has been here on and off practically since the beginning, will take up the title of "Owner", and all of the responsibilities and decision making powers that come with it. After a period of transition in which Writer will choose new staff members, revise the rules for the site, and create clear and public rules for the moderators to follow, I will become a regular Admin working under his guidance. I will, of course, continue being the System Administrator, and continue hosting the site.
Thanks for all the good times, folks. It's probably going to be a bumpy transition, but I really think that this is for the best. I hope that most of you can forgive me.

We need several frequent (many times daily) Uboachan users in a variety of mostly non-American timezones (or with similar availability) who would like to become Janitors and help us keep Uboachan clean of spambot posts. Users in American timezones are still welcome to apply.
What Janitors Are
Janitors are otherwise ordinary users with special limited access to the site's administrative backend. Janitors have exactly one job, and that is to regularly check the recent posts page and Perma-ban & Delete spambot posts as they appear.
What Janitors Are NOT
Janitors are not moderators. They do not interpret the rules, moderate disputes, or take any actions against regular users. They also do not have any special privileges or status compared to regular users, aside from the job listed above.
Summary of Responsibilities
* Check the recent posts page several times a day. The more frequently the better.
* Be present in the moderation Discord channel, where you can talk with the site and Discord staff and other Janitors.
* Perma-ban and delete obvious spambot posts as quickly as possible.
* Ask Seisatsu if you are unsure about a post.
* Janitors who abuse their authority will be dismissed.

In booger's case, is it possible that the stalker got hold of her real name through a reverse image search due to the huge volume of cosplay and non-cosplay pictures she has posted here over several years? Surely those weren't all posted only on Uboachan. Isn't there some kind of guideline we could implement to warn people about cross-posting images that trace back to their IRL info?
If there are still cosplayers who want to post here, I'm worried they might just end up posting in /o/ or elsewhere instead. It might be better to have a board with some clear rules and warnings than have the photos just show up elsewhere on the site. I also don't want to tell interested cosplayers that they aren't allowed to post here.

We started off January with the server crashing and a downtime of several days while the OS was reinstalled and backups were restored. At the same time, Yume Nikki was re-released on Steam after all these years, with an "official" English translation. And to top it off, a few weeks later a new 3D game inspired by the original was announced, developed by a third party game development company allegedly under the supervision of Kikiyama themselves!
A result of this has been and probably will continue to be a huge boost of interest, injecting new life into the fandom, and bringing levels of activity to Uboachan not seen for some years. We may find that we are surrounded by a newer, younger fanbase which comes from a very different background than many of us. Please remember that you were new once too, and don't treat these new fans with contempt. The atmosphere of this place may change as the world changes around it, but it is fruitless to resent the flow of time. Whether or not the new material lives up to expectations, I think it's fantastic that a new generation can be introduced to a fandom we have enjoyed for over a decade, by the emergence of new content. And hopefully, we'll enjoy it too!

The /cos/ board was annexed for the time being, and a new board with new rules will take its place this year. This will hopefully prevent the new board from becoming a creepy mess. There is now a dedicated section for download links on the sidebar. And lastly, the board software was updated; though it was mostly if not entirely a bugfix release, some of these fixes were sorely needed.

I have also noticed in my short time here the userbase here is quite versed in greater chan culture/history. Very nice to see some places still do it right.
Seisatsu, have you ever considered making an /int/ board? Because I know a lot of quality posters that would get along great with y'all, but mostly from various bastardizations of krautchan's /int/ that I don't think could acclimate immediately with this more Japanese and American spirit. Germans, Latinos, Hungarians, Strayans, Kazakhs, etc. intelligent folks with a lot of interesting things to say, but different from the uboachan posters as we know them. Don't get me wrong, the appreciation for YN and anime is there, but less so. Political theory, world news and dank menes take the center stage.
I do think that there is a market for another /int/ board in the chanosphere, not everyone is happy with KC right now, 8chan and 4chan are wastelands, and the little chans are too slow and intimate for a lot of people that are trying to get away from the younger generation of Bernds and find a place more in line with their level of discourse.

Mono sisters/Masada idea?
So,I was talking with my girlfriend about Yume Nikki and we started mention theories. I'm not sure if someone has already came up with this. But we think it's possible that Monoko could possibly be raped and her hands resemble the rapists hands. Someone maybe grabbed her head and they could have pulled her arms back so she won't be able to move, maybe even broke her arms. we had an idea that Masada was madotsuki/monoko/monoe and the other's teacher, and he took great care of them. He might have died and that the spaceship could be something to take him to the after life. The reason why Monoe is smiling all the time could be because she is depressed or trying to hide some sort of pain, as "smile the pain away". Maybe she saw Monoko (and possibly Madotsuki as well) being rapped and was forced to watch and smile.

But the Recent Posts bar continues crawling forward without fail, and it's not just full of bullshit, and it makes me feel like I'm still making a worthwhile use of my time and effort in despite of our detractors. I think that, even though Uboachan has changed so much, and many things have ended forever, there is even now still quality content and discussion to be appreciated.
That's not to say that everything has been great. The CP spam was unbearable for a while and we took too long to come up with a good solution. Questionable or, yeah, even bad decisions have been made in the running of this community. I've felt so uncertain sometimes and wondered if I was making the right choices, or if I was betraying my values or the values of this site in the name of peaceful conduct in times of trouble. There have been ugly and destructive public arguments between staff and users, and the staff have been divided in opinion on important issues and come to uneasy compromises.
Our two most involved moderators left a few weeks ago, and the staff room is very quiet now. But, maybe it's for the best if I run most of this show on my own from now on. The other staff members will continue to support my efforts to keep the wheels turning.
And I'm really still trying, you know, because I still love Uboachan! I hope that this can keep being a place that other people can love as well. You may not believe it, but without Uboachan I would not even have half of the IRL friends I have now, I would not be living with these cool roommates, I would never have met my previous or current girlfriend, and I may have never even moved out of my Mom's house, or gone on a real adventure in my entire life. The power of the Internet to connect people together is deeper than I can fathom. This place is so special to me, so I'm going to keep loving it and running it for as long as I can.
Let's see for a while longer where Uboachan can go from here.

It may not look like much yet, but the staff have been busy devising new ways to make Uboachan great again this year. This has included subtle changes to the board rules, and reenvisioning of the policies by which the moderation staff operate. And behind the scenes, we've been working on bugfixes and new software to help us battle the rising tides of CP spam. Some shitty pedo won't be the death of us, and neither will negativity or bad vibes. We're stepping up our game in the background to clean this place up.
First off, the wordings of the rules have been altered to reflect a major change in the goals of the moderation staff. We're going to be tougher on shitposting this year. Let this be a warning: destructive posters and poisonous sentiments will be leeched from Uboachan like venom from a wound. If you are a total dickwad, you will first be warned generously to clean up your act, and then you will be banned. Let's all take this opportunity to be awesome and helpful people – the kind of people who build up a community rather than tearing it down. We could use some community-building right about now.
The CP spam remains a problem this year, but we've got people working behind the scenes to make the spammer's job harder. Every new countermeasure we develop incites an almost immediate change in the way the bot operates to nullify that countermeasure. We are being watched, so we're going to watch right back. Please welcome Jove, our new Janitor and Countermeasures Developer, who has been writing us software to help the board and the staff do their jobs more quickly and efficiently. Among these new developments is a bot that notifies the staff of new posts and suspected floods. We'll also be hiring additional Janitors to help us out! If you'd like to help us keep Uboachan clean of spam, shoot me an email at seisatsu@uboachan.net and tell me why you would be a valuable addition to the team.
And last on the docket, we've got way too many boards! It's not my fault, I didn't do it, it was like this when I got here. :(
We're finally going to be working on merging and restructuring boards. Don't worry, the staff will be accepting requests to move threads from retired boards to their new and consolidated replacements so that good content isn't buried and lost. And of course, we will be relying on input from the userbase during this process to ensure that existing board communities are preserved throughout these changes. This is going to include a major change to /n/, which will be revealed shortly.

First off, my long-time roommate and several year veteran Uboachan poster Izumi was just given moderator powers a few days ago, and is now getting situated. It's a bit unusual for a user to be promoted directly to Moderator status without being a Janitor first, but I need some more direct help running the site, and I feel that living together with someone else on the staff will give me a partner to collaborate with on a day-to-day basis if need be. It's really nice to have another person here in my house who's been active on Uboachan longer than I've been running the place, and I hope that it will help us communicate better with the entire staff team if we go at running things together. The staff list in the FAQ is also up to date again.
I'm sure everyone's noticed the annoying CP spam that's been constantly appearing on the boards. Bit of bad news here. I've tried setting up countermeasures such as phrase filters to automatically block posts, but as soon as I set them up, the bot changed tactics and stopped duplicating phrases between posts or leaving links in the post body. Unfortunately, this is a confirmation of our worst fear regarding these spam waves: they're only partially automated. An actual living and breathing pedo scumbag is behind the scenes, willfully and actively adjusting the bot's parameters to break through our security measures every time we update them. Not even captchas will stop a human. There is literally no way to stop the spam, and there never will be, and it will probably never go away until the person responsible is tracked down and arrested. Most likely they're in another country and this will never ever happen. All we can do is hire more Janitors to try and keep on top of them and hope they give up eventually. Sorry guys, I know it sucks but there's nothing I can realistically do here except ramp up our cleanup efforts. Though, if any of you have any novel ideas, please find and post in the relevant thread in /sugg/. I'd be happy to hear some fresh thoughts.
Further compounding the above issue is a weird bug we've nicknamed the "Ghost Thread Bug", which prevents threads from dying properly when a staff member deletes them. Deleting the thread deletes the image and makes the thread page 404, but a shadow thread remains on the board index and won't go away until someone else posts in the board or an administrator manually rebuilds the index. This is a huge pain in the ass and leaves garbage everywhere each time we clean up a spam wave. I've tried a couple things to fix it but they didn't work, and what's more the thread deletion code looks correct and I can't figure out why it isn't working. Even worse still, the maintainer for our software has basically retired and I don't have the skills anymore to track down the glitch in the codebase. If anyone here is competent at PHP debugging, please email me and I'll set you to work tracking this thing down. (My email address is in the FAQ.)
On a lighter note, I recently found out that the Oekaki module has been broken for at least a month. Oops. We needed some configuration changes to support a new version that was updated in some time ago, which have now been added, so it should work again. Also, for any Uboachanners on the west coast US, I'm going to be departing northbound on a road trip from Willits, California on the 23rd of this month with Izumi and a few other friends and settling in Bremerton, Washington for ~10 days before we turn around and head back to Sacramento. I can't stop to meet anyone on the way up, but I may be able to stop for short hangouts on the way back south, depending on how things turn out. Hello! So I've been designing characters and thinking of ideas for worlds for a fan game I want to make called Spectrum. So, I need a little help. There was a particular thread on /fg/ a while ago about listing games in tiers and your opinions on them. I can't find it anymore; I believe is has been deleted?

What I'm after is a certain picture of cake effect Urotsuki that was posted in that thread. (Pic somewhat related: this was one of the few Urotsuki pictures posted in that thread.) Unfortunately, my internet sleuthing skills suck and I haven't been able to find it, so this is my last resort.
Help would be greatly appreciated.

It's still a beta, and I've left some of elements untouched because I didn't see any noticeable change after playing with them a bit (This is mostly because if I you try to move from a page to another, or to post, the sheetstyle will be reswitched again to Uboachan Classic. I think these are inside that category but, again, I don't know; I may missed something).

You just wander around and everwhere you look there's something interesting. Sure everything's quiet and still and it takes awhile for new things to appear but that's ok. If I look closely, I'll see someone sitting in the dark, reading a book or listening to music or drawing or something. They seem nice. Maybe I'll say hi later. I think I'll stick around.

Dream vs. Dream Board
So Mathew, the programmer for Dream vs. Dream, posted an idea for a board for Dream vs. Dream so that everything could be more organized. It would help out a lot in that we'd be able to separate everything out. For example, we could have a thread for posting the movesets in and for critique and advice on them, we could have another for art and spriting work, we could have another music production, etc.It's not imperative that we get a separate board, but it sure would help us all out.
