We are about to have an influx of refugees from the shuttered 8chan, and this is probably inevitable.
However, this is not 8chan, and it's definitely not 4chon.
Participation is welcome, but a sudden sharp increase of alt-right material and garbage posts will not be tolerated.
Please leave your hitlers, seisatsu.pngs, burning crosses, and shitpost floods at the door.
Even on /ot/, we expect some level of quality in our posts. Please familiarize yourselves with our rules and guidelines, and make sure to lurk before posting.
Also, apologies for deleting the /4chon/ refugee thread outright, I overreacted. There's nothing wrong with such a thread as long as it doesn't cause me too much of a headache.
Enjoy your stay and don't be a dick.

So, back in the day I mercilessly stole textures from all over the place (Kikiyama, /fg/, people with talent, etc.} to create the only complete Yume Nikki texture pack at the time. After 1.8 I got overwhelmed with the fifty-billion new things added and decided to take a break. Now I'd like to continue and bring it up to date for 1.1. Just like before, any questions, comments, and suggestions are more than welcome. Also, if I took something and you want me to drop it from the pack… just ask!

I'm going to offer a bit of constructive criticism. If you're going to make something repeat in a texture, you have to actually make it loop. If that makes sense. When you look at it you shouldn't be able to tell they are 16x16 tiles.

I love the hands in place of shrooms and plants though.

Sorry for the necrobump, but I'm posting from Kyoto where I just picked up a copy of the game in a book-off store (they were trying to hide it I swear.)
I'm on my phone right now so it's cumbersome to search in multiple tabs, so I'm up for uploading a PSX rip of the game if it hasn't been done yet.

Kinda off-topic, but could you talk about how your trip in furui heiankyou was like? Also pics and whatnot, I'm honestly interested. I think the random thoughts thread in /ot/ would be a better place for it though.

itch.io seems to be the spot for some of the more interesting new indie games, so I figured I'll start a thread for people to discuss and share their favorites!

https://vltmn.itch.io/the-endless-express

So I'll start the thread with this little gem. Basically Spirited Away with hints of Yume Nikki, the music and aesthetic sense are just great.

Yeah, I got nothing. Surreal, confusing, "games"?… most of the stuff here is like half Yume Nikki with less cohesion done in Unity. Worth poking about tho, for sure.

have any of you heard of Patty & Mr. Miles?
it's a strange game with a lot of deeply disturbing elements in it, as well as more games by the same creator claimed to be in the same setting/timeline
Patty and Mr. Miles seems at first that it's like animal crossing or some kind of happy town life simulation, but the After Story provides a lot of detail to the backstory as well as contrasting the rest of the game with moderately demented imagery and themes

here's a link for it! https://doushiuhohtranslations.wordpress.com/2014/08/28/a-vague-story-and-patty-and-mr-miles-wolf-rpg-editor-games-by-brownsugar/

I've had my eye on this one. Really glad it's getting localized.

Speaking of NIS

I can also recommend HtoL#Niq and the spiritual sequel Rose and the Old Castle of Twilight. The former is on steam and the latter isn't available in the west yet but it's cheap to import from amazon.jp.

Last night I just discovered a DOS point-and-click game named DreamWeb the other night, and downloaded and installed SCUMMVM to play it. So far I love it; it has a well-created atmosphere with solid music and an intentionally dreary cyberpunk aesthetic, the characters have so far been lovably degenerative and original, and the plot is gripping and original with more than a dash of angst.

I don't want to spoil anything, but in essence, the amount I've played of it has been about a man who is plagued by dreams wherein he is told to kill 7 people who will corrupt and destroy the already dark cyber-punk world of the game. The protagonist is rapidly deteriorating mentally and emotionally, becoming resigned to his fate.
There's more than a little uncertainty as to whether the protagonist is actually seeing real events and being affected by real people in these dreams, though; they may just be the internal justifications of a soon-to-be serial killer.

You can find the game here, and elsewhere on the same site you can download a decent engine to run it on modern machines:

When it was originally released, it came with this booklet, helping to establish the character:
http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/dreamweb/Dreamweb_-_Diary_of_a_Mad_Man_-_PC.pdf

It gets a little cheesily deranged at a certain point, but I love how much effort this showed on the part of the creators that was poured into this game, and something about it has a certain charm to me.

It's the sequel to Amihailu in Dreamland that nobody asked for!

Amihailu's World of Magic is a PC-98 styled turn-based RPG in the turn-based style of Rogue, where you play as Amihailu and explore her magical world of Tumydorado. This time, you're fighting a variety of different hostile creatures as you explore, with one of the many unique tools the game gives you to do so.

Features (some are planned, some are already in the game):
-Simple melee combat/skills using Amihailu's powerful fists
-Utility and attack magic for solving puzzles, defeating enemies, or escaping
-Ranged combat using firearms for a different flavour and new tactical challenges (being well-trained in their use, Amihailu is reluctant to use her gun at times she determines it would be unsafe)
-Shops, new characters, and a new surreal story starring Amihailu
-640x400 16-colour palette and simple graphical effects to preserve a PC-98 aesthetic

The game's intended to eventually be a commercial product, but the first couple of alpha builds will be free (if a bit sparse) so that people can try it out and see if they enjoy it.

Feel free to ask questions or suggest a feature or two! I'll talk a bit more about systems as I implement them. The game's being made with Game Maker, so it can compile cross-platform. The newer GML is a bit more C-like, so I have little trouble programming with it as well.

Are you planning to incorporate new features for the dungeons, or you're going for the classic stuff?

 No.4162

There's no procedural generation, I'm considering adding puzzles or somesuch that need special equipment to engage (like zelda or metroid) which requires the dungeons to be hand-made.

For any incomplete releases you should largely expect fighting and progression demos though!

This looks fucking cool as hell. Really looking forward to seeing more of this.
I hope you take some inspiration from Yume Nikkis exploration too.

Due to popular demand (hahaha, okay, couldn't say this with a straight face)

Err, anyway, due to demand… I decided not to do AdLib+effects/processing for the soundtrack. I'm using OPNA FM synth instead, like I originally wanted to.

The game won't use the original PMD files like Hell Diary (I want it to be playable on Mac and Linux) but the tracks are rendered from the PMD originals using FMPMDE and then snipped down to loop properly in the engine.

And, instead of Hell Diary's monoaural YM2203, this game will use YM2608/YMF288 stereo six-channel FM+PSG. Enjoy!

"This thing again?!"

A while ago I put Hell Diary on hiatus while I worked out the design of the game and what direction I wanted to go with it. Is it a sim, an adventure, what do I want to do with this thing?

I think it's still my most popular game despite not being in active development… until recently. A lot of people really, really liked Nightmare Castle, or at least some of the things it did with aesthetics. Hell Diary is set in that era (well… roughly). So I've started over again almost from square one and worked out some design elements I can stick to and make the game really fun for me to work on and feel like I'm making progress, and not confusing the hell out of players.

I've done away with the in-universe calendars and lingo and stuff, I'll just say the game is set in 1979 and has all of the characters you knew from before. But I'm splitting the story up into three "episodes" and at least trying to start out less open-ended. Gameplay's the same, but the aesthetic is different and there should be less stuff to wade through to get to the story.

NOW, the game's being done with Nightmare Castle's PC-8801/9801 aesthetic with 8-colour 640x400 graphics, and a soundtrack done with emulated YM2203 and Music Macro Language instead of Nightmare Castle's SB16 soundfont. I've already got the "engine" set up (it reuses Nightmare Castle's scripts and visual effects). I'll have some more about it up when I can take some screens; this post is long enough already!

Also, if you want, you can support me working on free resources and games on Patreon. You will get to download the game or any free music even if you don't donate, though: https://www.patreon.com/NoyemiK
