I just wanted to let you all know that I'm going to make a Yume Nikki comic pretty soon in celebration of 20 years since it last updated, Oct 1 2007! I made the cover and here it is!! What do you all think, let me know!

>20 years since it last updated
Is the future really like that?

Sorry I meant 10. Thank you for finding that!

>20 years
God, you almost gave me a mini heart attack with that. For a second it made me wonder what was wrong with my memory.

I agree with >>6761 that the newbie art is going to repel people, but if you like YN why not. If at least you have fun with it then it is worth it, and from what I've observed, Yume Nikki is usually a great influence in people's artistic path. Go for it.

What approach are you going to give, if it's not too much to ask? With/without storyline, comical, surreal, 2d4u philosophical ramblings, …?

Well, I'm thinking it will be like the manga, how it's mostly from Madotsuki's POV, but I will give lots of other characters the spotlight too. The story is going to be my theories of the game, like how Madotsuki needs to find the effects or else she will be trapped in her dream world forever. I imagine the people who are helping Madotsuki are Masada, Poniko, Mars-San, Mafurako, Monoko, Monoe, and Kamakurako. But then there are the characters who are essentially trying to forbid Madotsuki from leaving, like Uboa, Takofuusen, FACE, Kyuu-Kyuu kun, and the torinigen. Everyone else are people who were also trapped in the dream world. They all tried to get the effects but didn't and now they are stuck there. I also accept the theory that Madotsuki was raped.

Hey /yn/, I've been thinking, what is it about stuff like yume nikki that gives it that extra charm or appeal? There isn't much characterization with the MC herself and there isn't enough story to even be coherent. Then why is it so popular?

>And really well done on a technical level, even if it doesn't look like it.

it's literally an RPG maker game you bullshitter

That abuses the engine to accomplish things it was never designed for.

Walking and adding items to the inventory that change the look of your sprite?

For me, it's the fact that the game is a very abstract and enigmatic approach to something that interests me–how our mind processes the shit we go through outside of the conscious processing and how that affects us in making our decisions. Dreams are a major place we do that subconscious processing. Whether it's processing mundane things like events at school or media we consume, or something much more significant like abuse, social anxiety, or feelings of despair, dreams impact us in ways we can't explain or fully realize. We can't even remember them completely. And we don't know how we keep the terrible things inside of us hidden from our "active mind" in the background. It's just there keeping us sane until we let that out.

That's why I like Yume Nikki. It reminds me of things I wished couldn't be remembered and it fills me with emotions I didn't know existed in me. It's an experience every time I enter its world and for that it's my favorite game.

Same could be said about any piece of fiction, really.

Didn't know there was a spanish YN community, did they release any good fangames?

One of them released a fangame named Glemsomhet. They were also working on a co-op fangame named Diario de Las 7 Lunas (The Seven Moons Diary), but from what I remember they lacked members and couldn't get too far and it was an on-and-off thing (mind you, this was back in 2013, they may be working again on it right now). Honestly, I'd welcome it, we have already too many shitty fangames in english and japanese so some fresh ideas from outside these stagnant circles would be pretty cool.

>a fangame named Glemsomhet
Wasn't that cancelled literally two days ago?

Googling that 7 lunas thing gives me nothing, I tried hard, only thing I found is a forum thread in beanspeak from 2014 that I believe is somewhat related, but it doesn't tell me much either, I only know the protagonist is named "Luna". In four years I'm sure they made some progress.
Can anyone provide sauce?

Oh, was it? Didn't know. There it goes, then.

Honestly, can't tell for sure. Back then most of the people "working" on it seemed to be "the idea guy" rather than somebody who could draw, compose or map (since there are only a few tilesets and sprites around). As for how they're doing now, well, they don't seem to be posting the progress anywhere so I can't say for sure.

has anybody gotten this error before? I have no idea what it means

also have to add that this happens every time i try to go the FC world and i've deleted, redownloaded, and replayed the game more than once only to have it happen again afterwards. What the hell?

Leave one effect behind in the nexus, that will probably fix it.

What got you into Yume Nikki? How did you discover it?

He was and I assume is still is a heavy TV Tropes user, he found out many amazing games that would play to completion and love a lot, although he would never play more than 30 mins of the games he discovered through that website. Personally never understood it and I can see why people hate it per that thread you linked
As for the last question, he is my brother and I love him, needless to say we are polar opposites when it comes to politics.

>not being friends with someone because they use a website
Gosh you're all so horribly young

It's less about the website itself, and more to do with the type of people who generally use it. I wouldn't dislike somebody just because they use Bing, but there's a good chance that I wont like a troper. My comment was mostly a joke anyway.

It's worth noting that most people on most websites (including tvtropes AND uboachan) are regular people but that websites and online communities often encourage a certain standard of behavior among their users. New users will usually look at what sort of content is well received and at least subconsciously tailor their responses to match it. This is why most online communities receive a reputation for being a "hive mind." Furthermore, most people being different personalities to different situations, so it's hard to accurately classify a person as being a certain way, even though people make this unfair snap judgment all the time. I personally like to take this a step further and play with people's expectations by not consistently behaving in the same way in a given location to see how people will react.

I found it back in 2008 when it had the attention of 4chan.

So here is an interesting topic. To me what makes Yume Nikki different from other games is that the focus is not on any sort of game play but is all on the emotion behind it.

One of my favorite things to do in video games is explore. Even if there's nothing really there to explore, I'll probably spend a chunk of time doing so anyways. Yume Nikki is pure exploration. You can, and are expected to, look around in every little nook and corner.

For me it has always been a means towards a form of mental clarity and escape that rivals a dream like state. I have an unbroken tradition of playing yn during late nights for long periods of time. There is a unique flavor of mental state that this game induces for me. It's hard to properly phrase this

I wish I could give you a hug; I have had very similar experiences. Right down to being abused by your "best friend." I thought I deserved it at the time, due to how I was raised.

The creator of YN is truly someone who understood the mystery - not that it was solved, but that the amorphous psychic mystery is there in the first place.

It really makes me wonder if everyone has the potential for these thoughts within them, or if we are simply fated to wander amongst them - the true extroverts - forever.

>tfw had a gf who would have understood this

>tfw I couldn't make myself accept that she actually cared about me
>tfw lack of trust destroyed the relationship

We are doomed to suffer.

It's really quite hard to put into words… I feel like the game understands me, it demonstrates my feelings of loneliness and disconnection perfectly. It's a really personal thing I suppose, you either get what I'm saying or you don't. It's just so comforting, I feel right at home when I play it. Not to mention I've always loved weird psychological shit like Silent Hill and LSD Dream Emulator so this was right up my alley.

Yume Nikki is just a great experience in general, sometimes i download the game to feel this experience again and again, the soundtrack and the events are probably the best part of it. I think Yume Nikki is mysterious and emotional.

Even if have a decent life right now, Yume Nikki is my place to escape from real life sometimes. This game got me interested into dreaming and writing my own dream dairy, it's a really interesting experience.

This game also had one of the best and most dedicated communities in gaming.

I just found a lot of Yume Nikki fan animations. They are pretty good.

this has to be one of my favorite ones from this person

I love these. I had no idea there were so many.
I'll see if I can figure out how to make webm's so I can share them easily.

The music and general layout of this area reminds me of the legend of zelda. Am I the only one?

checkered tile path kinda reminds me of call of duty

The music that plays when you sit at the desk reminds me of this chiptune. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMduRpkEK08

Oh cool. I was thinking I was the only one who thought the tiled path looked like CoD. I'm glad I'm not.

Zelda and Earthbound yeah, but the whole area reminds me of Chrono Trigger's future world map too.

A lot of people know about the speed glitch, but there are actually a lot more interesting things that happen when you use effects with the chair. I wanted to see what all of them were so I made a spreadsheet documenting it along with other things. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1j-la3zVllugghwLUT4am2rw-ViPOcjQOkcwcWvSIW8Y/edit?usp=sharing

>effects with the chair

Why did I never try this?

What are the places that madotsuki travels to in the nexusneIn a really psychological sense they could be apart of her memories, her dreams, her desires or places she just made up. Also the creatures that inhabit those areas are almost always an animal or some abstract being besides poniko. Are there any observant anons out there who might have picked up on something that i missed lore wise?

I don't understand what is it that you're asking, because you seem to reply to your own questions yourself… do you want to know what we think?

>What are the places that madotsuki travels to in the nexus?

That's a rather difficult question to answer because there is not a single answer. They could be anything, really, and everything depends on other factors. They could be memories, tied to real life experiences, just as they could be fictional places created by her mind while asleep. There isn't a single hint anywhere.

>Also the creatures that inhabit those areas are almost always an animal or some abstract being besides poniko

There are a few more that are anthropomorphic. Namely, the mall people, the guy fishing, and the people at the barracks, if my memory doesn't fail. To me, their design is simple only because they aren't tied to somebody Madotsuki knew, unless like Poniko who seems to be someone important enough to be differentiable from the rest. Also the toriningen. They're quite enigmatic, since they are well-defined beings with a rather specific purpose and states, unlike the others NPCs.
