Why do people need the author or creator to explain the meaning behind things? Do people not realize art is subjective and will never be viewed the same exact way by people because of how we all think differently. You don't need some easy answer to enjoy the meaning behind a game. The whole point is to use your own emotions and thought to figure things out for almost everything.

Another thing is that even if the author says something there's no way knowing what situation he's in and if he really thinks that. People lie all the time about things. Hideaki Anno is a good person to use as an example because he's contradicted himself a few times when he talks about Evangelion. That's because he was in a bad mental state and isn't the most stable person to begin with. Also, I'm sure to anyone who's written something you know your feelings of what the project means can change during the process.

To me it will never matter what Kikiyama says even if he made a huge detail analysis of YN. I'd be interested and read it, probably even get some new insights, but I would not see it as some all-knowing answer because I heavily believe in Death of the Author. However even if you don't you still shouldn't rely on the creators and try and think for yourself.

>believing in death of the author

>still relying on largely surpassed 50 years old literary theory no one takes seriously any longer

It's a game about walking without meaning, Kikiyama is dead, Project Yume Nikki is fraud.
Deal with it.

Which theories have surpassed it?

The pursuit of Kikiyama which we know will never end is what fuels this community to begin with. Let's say we got our answers, it would officially be the end of the Yume Nikki journey.

We do NOT necessarily want those answers, we want

1. For Kikiyama to come back and update Yume Nikki.
2. Kikiyama to never return so we can chase him forever.

But we'll actively chase him, hoping he comes back.

We want which we cannot have. The chase is the happiness, the find marks the end of it.

New music video with some very Yume Nikki-ish imagery, especially toward the end. Could be real?

File: 1478190563232.jpg (327.74 KB, 900x666, 12.jpg) ImgOps Exif Google

That's because the artist who made that video is a YN fan and even used to draw fanart for it
I can't link the original upload since it was deleted though, but here's a copy someone saved

The big thing reminds me of pupun

I think finally understand Yume Nikki now. I'm not saying I'm the absolute-est right, I just wanted to share this with you. Just a ramble. Sorry for my English.

It's been perhaps over 10 years since it came out now. I discovered it… 4-5 years ago, I think. It scared the hell out of me, it made me cry, but it also made me interest; I was obssessed with it (like most of my interests), kept researching it, theorizing it, everything.
For a while, I let go. It's always been in my heart - when someone refers "Yume Nikki" it's like, ah, that nostalgic feeling.

But it's only in the past few years, and most intensely now, that I understand Yume Nikki. Perhaps I'm feeling just like a special snowflake. Perhaps I'm finally going insane. I don't know. It doesn't matter right now, this isn't about me.

But hear meowt, and forgive me if I am posting this in the wrong place, or forgive me for posting at all.

Will post in parts.

"You're crazy, OP". I am. (But then again, so is Madotsuki, if we're speaking normie-level.)

This game doesn't have a story because it isn't a story.

It's a feeling, a message.

A feeling/message that sometimes I wonder if is what drove Kikiyama to make this game.

That's what I think, anyway.

I'm going to sleep now.

Nice, you basically summed up my thoughts on the whole thing as well.

Your third theory is the one most backed up by the game. The effects more or less prove that she's experienced that specific dreamscape. After she has seen everything there is to see in her dreams, there's little reason to continue living.

i think mado journey ends and there nothing to do for her in world. her great mission was completed succecfully so nothing more she needs

i think its a journey. mado searches ansvers could make her "complete". so when she finally completed the journey ends.

To be fair, the original playthrough used on that video was first uploaded on 2007.

The only advice I can give you is you should ask on some Japanese imageboards, fan sites or a p2p client. It's obvious by the time yn got popular in the West, v0.9 Was long gone. The image I posted is from 07 as well. Its from an old Japanese fansite that's still around. I'll link it when I get off work.

nvm it hasn't been updated since 2011. Cool art tho.

What is different about 0.9 exactly? If you don't mind me asking.

haven't watched the whole video yet, but for one thing the grafitti world has a completely different layout

Alright, so way back in 2012, I frequented here a lot, looking at all the fanart because I was too much of a pussy to play the actual game. I rediscovered both the game and this place again, games a blast, but this place seemed to change a bit. I remember there being boards for Mado, Poniko, and Masada, and from the looks of it, there still are. But how do you access them besides knowing the address? I could have sworn there was a board for the desert twins too.

[s] I also commissioned a yuri piece of Mado and Poniko awhile back, where would the best place to post that be? [/s]

They got archived due to lack of activity, check the "annex" link over on the sidebar to see what all's hiding in there. They're all locked now, new posts are just lumped into /c/ (characters). Your art thingy could go either there or in /o/ prolly, under a spoiler image dealyjigger.

So i've never used a forum before and i'm probably already doing 200 things wrong but i've found something weird, and as far as i know, no one has talked about this yet.

When i was just mindlessly wandering the files on my computer like a complete idiot about an hour ago, i ran into the Yume Nikki folder and decided to look through it for some reason. I was surprised to find about 90 percent of the files i opened weren't from Yume Nikki, they appear to be from some RPG like game. There's music files, sprites, backgrounds, soundeffects…
My question is: has anyone done some research on these files? If so, what are they from? my first guess was that they were just unused material, but there's so many files, and the unknown RPG is not at all like Yume Nikki.

I took a screenshot of a file named 'monster'.

they're the default RPG maker assets that come with the program, lol

Oh haha
I know nothing about RPG maker lol
thanks for replying :)

Also the full soundtrack of the game is in there, so you can listen to all the Yume Nikki music you want.

Is it just me or has the yume nikki fandom died out nearly on youtube unlike games like Ib and .flow

Everyone who is interested or would want to know about Yume Nikki has probably already seen or played it. The fandom hasn't died there is just no point in making videos. YN let's plays aren't that popular because walking simulator 9000 doesn't seem that interesting to people.

Speaking as a YouTuber who's let's played Yume Nikki and several fangames, they're just really hard to commentate on. When all you can do is wander around the same places looking for the same effect, you're gonna run out of stuff to talk about.

Can you link me to your chanel anon?

Also Yume Nikki playthroughs don't tend to get a lot of views, so that makes them more hidden in the ocean of videos.

Yume Nikki is easily my favorite RPG Maker title of all time, I've decided to further my obsession by learning how to speed run it.

I've just achieved a new PB: 17:40.

This run was great, at least for my current skill level. Unfortunately the Darkness and The Wilderness costed me ridiculous amounts of time. I'll do better next run.

To those who are new to my runs, when I stop for a couple of seconds for no 'obvious' reason, it's because I'm taking a look at my notes. The video quality will also be improved for my next Speed Run recording.

My dream is to reach the top 9 in the leaderboards: http://www.speedrun.com/yumenikki#Any%25

As a Yume Nikki fan, I know it's painful to not get any new content to watch, so I thought it might be interesting for you guys here.

Hey Sabiiii, could you please tell me what I'm doing wrong? Something that happens frequently during my runs is that Madotsuki randomly sits on the floor without me doing anything. It randomly happens while I'm moving.

My latest PB got heavily damaged for it:

An example of this can be seen at 7:24 in my run. Is there anything in particular that I'm doing that triggers this?

UPDATE: New PB! 14:42. My goal to reach a 14:XX PB has been achieved!

New PB! 13:14 with a few silly mistakes I've learned to avoid.

PB: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4cmyGHVO38

I am inlove with the fact that you started speedrunning this game recently. I'm not sure who it was that said this, it mightve been in your video info but, In regard to your wanting more people in the community to speedrun this game. From my side, I have the whole route memorized and practiced, but I won't be speedrunning for two reasons. 1. at this moment in time I do not have the time to spend on speedrunning :( 2. I do not like racing to my death. In the original game I never reached the end but if I had reached the end I would not have jumped off you know what Otherwise, I wish you fun and luck in reaching your goals!

Hi there.. Glad to see people speedrunning.

That occurs as a side effect of the chair glitch. If you follow the route in the speedrun.com guides section for the game, it says how to "unglitch" out of this "glitched state" so that you never get stuck.

Happy running.
