Which, if any, of the following traits preclude a game's status as a 'traditional' Yume Nikki fangame?
>being made with a 3D engine
>being made in an engine other than RPGmaker
>having a non-fixed viewpoint
>having dialogue/dialogue trees
>having non-chibi/large player models
>having a non-tile-based movement system
>having 'health points' that allow the player to take multiple hits
I have an idea for something but I'd prefer to stay within the constraints of classical YNF design.

 No.15017

>having dialogue/dialogue trees

Degrees vary, but this is the dealbreaker for me. As soon as it has more than 2-3 lines of writing in total it's not longer a 'traditional' fangame, even worse if the writing is dialogue.

Thank you for replying. Here are a few more elements for your consideration.
>realtime/reflex-based gameplay
>puzzles
>inventory systems/non-effect items
>following NPCs
>combat beyond simple knife/knife-analogue usage

Also, what about system specifications? Yume Nikki is apparently good to go on a 200MHz machine with 32MB RAM and no video card. Is this the system profile a fangame maker ought to target?

I have downloaded every single Yume Nikki Fan Game listed on the Yume Nikki Fan Game wiki. Since Yume Nikki has been acquired by Kadokawa, It is uncertain whether they may begin to take down fan games. Here is a torrent of all of them, every version, every available translation, in every available language.

"The whole Kancolle situation" is an entirely different matter though, because all circumstances point to the ban only existing out of fear that a fan could make a better KanColle game than the original (which wouldn't be any difficult at all). Kadokawa owns a fuckton of series and they don't care about fangames based on the vast majority of them, hell even Kemono Friends which they murdered so soon after it exploded is free game for fan games.
But yeah, in any case it's always great to have more mirrors. I've suffered a lot with the official downloads for 2kki in the past too so it feels nice having another place to download it from, so thanks for the paranoia.

I've stopped hosting these because they were using experimental options.
I'm going to host the collection with the default options since that's more sane.
As well as continue seeding the torrents for both, currently I have ~3TB of combined upload.

 No.12330[Reply]

I've been trying to remember some old YN fangame from years ago but I can't think of the name of it. It was really unusual and creepy.

Basically the protag of the game was, like, some shadow girl, and she had this other normal looking blue room. Instead of dreaming in her bed, she used a music box, but here's where things get weird.

Apparently the game would crash and upload some kind of virus onto your computer if you tried to listen to the music box. The virus would delete and replace saved images with pictures of the shadow girl with a red background. I remember somebody however managed to fix the game so that the virus wouldn't run when you went to the music box, but after that was done, it was found out that going up to the music box and listening to it transported the girl to either an endlessly looping black world, or an endlessly looping red world depending on some variable, with no means of "waking up".

Does anyone know what game I'm talking about is? And just what was the deal with it? Was it some weird attempt at creepypasta? Some weird troll game?

Nice find! I'll have to check this out myself.
Also, considering that was posted close to the first Red Room after the game's release, I think that's just 1o111111 showing (in their own cryptic way) how to trigger it, as it lines up with everything shown. (Lights off, radio)

 No.15047

New moon is here again, and the red room is active same as before, but looks like no new content still.

Considering how completely barebones this game is, I'm really surprised how often I think about it though. Would not recommend opening it up while intoxicated due to the negative emotional aura. Very bad vibes.

 No.15055

>>15047
A negative emotional aura is something I've personally experienced, and according to other users I've spoken to, it's not unheard of for them either.
I joked about the game being possessed a while back, but that's getting a little too real for me… Just kidding! I'm seeing this through to the end.

Wow. Out of every thread on this board, this is not one I'd expect to see miraculously revived. I always felt that there was something more to this bizarre little game, so color me ecstatic! I also never expected its mysteriousness to run so deep.

>>15055

I find it hard to put into exact words but I've felt the same effects playing this. Weird. Some people were haphazardly giving this game flak for the grim-dark aesthetic it kinda feels like it has on the surface but going through all of it thoroughly, I'd argue this is probably one of the most isolating and alien feeling YNFGs I've played. Hard to put to words, like I said, but it does feel like there's some sort of malevolent presence behind the game or something, which was probably the intention behind the very unique atmosphere.

(Could I get a fresh link for that Discord server? It appears that the old one's expired)

The game really does seem to hold some mysterious energy to it, and the dev being as cryptic as they are only fuels this. Glad to be an active part of this, and I can't wait to see what else is uncovered about the game!

I'm looking for fangames that look nice and have good music. I've already played quite a few, but some of them just seem so short or are unfinished.
I've already tried out most of the big ones, like 2kki, Nisshi, Ultra Violet, Debris, Yuque, TRIAL, Mikan Muzou, Tsukumono Yume, -1, Withers, Re:in and the like.

Could someone help me out?

 No.15021

File: 1614277586841.jpg (54.18 KB, 640x480, cz9tv6cgwwoz.jpg)

I guess you're missing .flow, I guess Miserere and Fleshchild also make some interesting experiences, though Fleshchild is supposedly not a fangame.

It's not "some" of them unfinished though, it's a huge vast majority, finding a good YNFG is like digging through the trash cans of the most disgusting hospital in he worst neighborhood trying to find something worth your while, I wish you luck in your quest.

I blame tumblr, it's like a factory of unfinished games there.

 No.15022

>>15021
Oh yeah, dunno why I forgot about .flow. I also forget about Yume Graffiti, which is one of my personal favorites. I'll give Miserere a shot. I remember trying Fleshchild once before, but there's something off putting about murdering people to get their body parts…

The Japanese Yume 2kki wiki has a list of fangames there (naturally only Japanese ones). I've decided it might be a good idea to look at the ones that actually have endings. I've found a few that I haven't played yet, so I'll have to try them out.

Just thought I'd introduce myself to the Yume Nikki community and let everyone know that I'm planning to start up a Youtube channel mainly dedicated to Yume 2kki, though I might cover some other fangames on it as well. The reason is because I feel like 2kki has gone more under the radar within the last few years, and I'm hoping to try and revive interest in the game through my own personal commentary on its many aspects such as maps, events, NPCs, etc.

I also want to make videos focused on 2kki's OST, because I think the soundtrack for 2kki is VASTLY underappreciated. There's so much good music in the game that gets unnoticed, it honestly makes me upset. My first plan for videos is to upload a series of compilations/mixes of all the chill and relaxing music/ambience from across the game. It'll be a big undertaking, but I have yet to see anyone else do this.

Here are some other ideas I have for videos on the channel in addition to the chill music mixes:

Chill & Calming Music from Yume 2kki to relax/study to (compilation series, no commentary)

The Most Beautiful & Serene Areas of Yume 2kki (commentary/opinion)

Yume 2kki's Creepiest, Eeriest, and Most Disturbing Maps (commentary/opinion)

The Worst & Most Frustrating of Yume 2kki's Maps (commentary/opinion)

The Problems with Yume 2kki's Development Cycle (opinion/critique)

I agree. I absolutely refuse to open the wiki. I wanna try to find everything by myself atm. and let's plays of yume [name] games most of the time are boring for me.

If we (or rather he) can avoid let's play-ish style of videos, that would be cool.

personally, I'm thinking: (The example i am showing applies to some of his ideas. not all. anyway:) starting the video with the player just about to enter the subject of the video and making a short summary of the subject and mention one thing that makes it interesting.
Not too long. just a small video. the video should leave enough detail to let the viewer be interested in finding it by themselves and experiment. Let them wonder about the subject.

The guy found his way into some then-unused maps through the debug room, probably. The maps in question were fully added into the game in ver 0.19 as the vomitgirl area (named after the folder holding said maps). From version 0.193 the maps MAP0280 (pic) and MAP0285 have been in the game in a similar fashion where they can only be accessed via debug or by opening it up with RPGmaker.

Funny detail is how lol_rust really likes putting holes in white hands now. It's the same as the character design for Mimimi, the playable character of Aruma Ketera, who is also lol_rust's vtuber avatar.

I've been playing this game for three years and I refuse to use the wiki or look at any walkthroughs. I love the feeling of slowly picking apart the mysteries on my own. Just a few moments ago I finally found the chainsaw effect. So excited to finally be able to start killing some NPCs!

Ill be starting coding classes soon and in almost a decade my love for Yume Nikki and various fan games has not diminished one bit. My dream is to be able to make my own YN inspired game. I know this means nothing to you as I can't do anything now but I know there are others like me.

I'm rambling, but I'm excited. And I'm excited about the future of fan games. The fact this board is still active is a reason to be positive and happy. Where does everyone think this genre can go? How can it evolve? General fangame love and positivity thread!

That's really cool Anon. I assume you know that most fangames are made in rpgmaker though right? Coding isn't necissary unless you want to build it from scratch or implement unusual features.

>Where does everyone think this genre can go? How can it evolve?

Something I was thinking about to develop the genra is exploring more about the mind than just regular dreams built on memories. Like you could make a game that takes place in the real world from someone with intense hallucinations, or someone who constantly slips into daydreams and the world keeps changing around them, or a psychonaught where the effects are different drugs (as long as it's not made by a 13 year old), or about the dreams of someone incredibly social or who's a devout catholic, or a child god where the world emerges chaotically from his daydreams but is still "real".
I also think there should be some movement away from randomness. I like RNG, but it would also be cool to have events hidden behind cryptic rituals and puzzles that you have to theorise and discuss how to get, like with Siren or (I think) PT.

>psychonaught where the effects are different drugs (as long as it's not made by a 13 year old)

Its funny because I have definitely thought of this. I mention coding only because I am also really inspired by LSD Dream Emulator, So I really like the idea of being in a 3d world. That game has many downsides though and I dont like it as much as Yume Nikki. Besides the 1St person perspective I really like the randomness of the rooms.

So you could do something like maps have slightly different appearances based off the effects you have used recently (which could play into the psychonaut, schizophrenic, daydrreamer angle. Wouldnt be hard for me either). Things like draw distance, color of lights, color of fog, number of sprites, and even textures could change. Among many other things.

I would introduce a lot more dead space though and looping levels, thats all standard.

This is all just theory rn though. Future planning I guess. I actually really like the "randomness", so long as its not "Zomg" random or "you have a 1 on 10 billion chance of this happening" random. I think its OK in moderation but I want to primarily focus on something that provides a unique experience everytime it is interacted with, while still maintaining a cohesive feeling.
