Do you think there'll ever be another fangame to the scale and ambition of Yume 2kki? Do you think there should be?

One word: Otaku. But the real meaning, not the meme.
Otaku means utter passion, losing yourself in your work, because you live it. It's not because you like it, it's not because you find it pleasant, it's not because it's a trend, it's because it's a core element in your life and you enjoy working on it instead of "making this cool fangame so everybody will suck my cokc and call me a dev xddd".
Most of Western people don't really understand this concept. For them, being otaku means liking anything that came from Japan. But that's just being a weeboo. That's also why most of the good artists on the internet are from orient. I'm not saying all of the art on this side of the planet is shit, nor that all the art from there is godly, but that's mainly the reason why you see such gorgeous art in blogs while in the west it's mostly kid who constantly copy each other and don't really progress.

We lack passion. We are not real otaku.

Wrong. Westerners aren't lazy and unwilling to put effort into things; Normal Westerners. In the J-pan I imagine everybody is imbued with a strong work-ethic no matter what due to societal training. Over here, society doesn't force it on you as hard. The westerners who are successful and well-adjusted are total workaholic drones, it's just that they put their effort into stuff immediately beneficial to themselves. A good private lawyer over here works just as hard as one in Japan. Same goes for engineers, doctors, ect. Meanwhile, the fringes of society, who would actually give a fuck about YN fangames, over here tend to not have that work-ethic. The fringes in Japan however, do. These are just generalizations, but overall this effect makes a big difference. That's my theory.
Also, recognize your faults and work on them. Stop fucking up projects plz.

I think it's important to see the difference between wannabes and actual developers.

I don't really consider anyone a developer unless they get to finish one project, and not a short one, but fangames are rarely short.

Someone who has the dedication to finish a game isn't lazy, but there are so many wannabes that it's just easy to think devs are shit.

 No.13820

As someone who reads japanese forums occasionally, let me tell you - an average Japanese anon is just as much of a useless retard as the Western one (albeit more polite usually), and the fact that Y2 came to exist is just as much a stroke of luck to them.

If I recall correctly though, a number of people who worked on the game already had a name to themselves, and assumed a separate identity inside the production, treating it as a passion project. So I guess the "otaku" argument is not entirely wrong; I certainly have a hard time imagining a Western dev doing that.

 No.13940

I have a rather novel idea. How about we take a leaf out of GNUs book and make our work opensourced? Create a repository for maps and sprites and sound effects, that anyone can use or alter in any form so long as people are properly credited. People would have zero restrictions for creations, and any person or team could take their work and edit and amalgamate it in an way for them to make their own final product.

As for a way to differentiate the game a bit and break the mold some, I'd like to be able to explore the whole protaganists house while awake, though still not able to leave. During dreams you could access the different world's by entering different rooms of the house or exiting. Having a non-static nexus or house as in not all words can be accessed from the nexus every time you dream. It could be a simple rotation, done randomly, or if an lsd em "tracker" is put in place it could relate to that. Or possibly just the scenery of the house and outside changes.

I don't think a tracker should be done in a 1 dimensional happy/sad fashion, but it should be a 2 dimensional map more like.

FOG is my Yume Nikki fangame, made with RPG Maker 2003. This traditional Yume Nikki fangame has more upbeat themes and equippable Perks that can be collected along with Effects.

Download:
https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0Bw8qNi_Zg1ydLWJPOTNiZkxPQ3M&usp=sharing

You should not need the RPG Maker 2003 RTP to play, but if it asks for it, download that too.

The current version is 0.0.2. Although a very preliminary version with 1 character (Leon) and just a few effects, all 12 Nexus doors are available.

Feel free to monetize videos and streams of this game. (Usage rules have just been updated.)

Hey, not really playing any games right now but good on you for continuing to update.

 No.12962

I just pulled the plug on YouTube monetization.

YouTube videos of FOG made on or after April 16th, 2016 can't be monetized with ads. (This doesn't apply to live streams.) YouTubers can still use things like tip jars or Amazon product affiliate links after that date, though.

It's because of shit like this:
https://www.reddit.com/r/assholedesign/comments/8cjjys/youtube_not_letting_you_skip_surveys_anymore/

Survey gates are unconscionable. When Internet ads get more aggressive, it's getting harder to fathom allowing just anyone to commercially use your work.

Hopefully, this won't negatively impact (dream)FOG. After all, Persona 5's strict streaming policies didn't stop Atlus from continuing the MegaTen franchise.

I just restarted this project: FOG v0.2.00.

The game project was originally improvised, but it proved too complicated to continue working that way. So I have to remake and streamline it. FOG will still be an open-world lucid dreaming game in the tradition of Yume Nikki.

- It will be remade in RPG Maker VX Ace. It appears to be the most powerful and efficient RPG Maker engine for this game. MV is bound by various HTML5/JavaScript nuances and limitations, and RM2k3 on Steam causes problems on certain operating systems.
- The game will NOT be in HD, as HD/UHD/4K does not appear to be a major concern to most gamers. The default screen size will be used.
- The game will have six dreamers: Tegan, Leon, Emory, Lindsey, Feldon, and Mitsuru.
- All music has been remade. For the third time. With the use of FL Studio (as opposed to a MOD tracker with ST-XX Amiga samples), the production value has increased.
- All dream maps are remade and streamlined in an outbranching world called the "Web of Dreams." 99 areas are planned. Familiar areas, such as the Neon World, will still exist. Further outward areas, such as endpoint dungeons, require certain Effects or Perks to access.
- After the base game is finished, a built-in randomizer with user-defined random number seeds and flag sets will be added.
- A RMMV-based HD mobile version based on this remake is still planned. It will be substantially different and optimized for mobile touchscreen play.

I have also restored monetization permissions for videos and streams. You may use currently available versions of FOG for this purpose. However, due to recent economic concerns, please use discretion if you monetize FOG videos and streams so not to inconvenience your audience.

Sounds great a bit overambitious even but I want to ask – what is the theme of your game? If there even is one, that is. I'm pretty sure the well of random exploration in dream diaries has long since run dry, so if you want your game to be acknowledged, you have to have an idea or theme that you would design the game around.

This mught sound dismissive, but the big idea is that your plan for the game sounds like a whole lot of work, so if the end result were to turn out generic and unmemorable, that would be a complete disaster. As such, you might wanna give it some thought while you're still at early stage of production.

This is a fangame im working on. It stars Angelica, a cute yet strong girl. The main focus of this game, aside from collecting effects, is defeating bosses. Yup, this YNFG will have battles. I'm only going to add boss battles, saving the rest of the game for npcs and such. As of right now, all I've done is a mockup of the title screen (image) and a character sprite, which is on my other pc which i dont have with me right now, so i'll probably show that tonight. I'll start actually working on the game either tonight or tomorrow. Stay tuned for updates! Sorry about the shitty image, I made it in a hurry on google drawing and i'll try to make a better one.

A good bunch of the short burst of western Post (And some Pre-)Answered Prayers fangames too. Some weren't ever finished, but what little was there (Anarchy comes to mind, so does N'Oubliez Jamais to a certain extent. While the latter is still influential, it certainly hasn't aged very well.)… For every semi-decent idea that somehow was never developed or even posted a demo, you'd get some really stupid things. Or even decent games that had its moments.

Also, The Door of Thoughts. Dear mother of fuck, that game. I know I was in that phase, still doesn't excuse it. While Remedy had its luck onto being partially undone and thus its newer version is lost, this first game is basically an ol' shame o' mine. It's interesting to see how far have I come, though.

Parade and Double Dream come to mind in the eastern side - not because of the typical SO EDGY, but because of the peculiar soundtrack and some of the artwork.

Made a fangame lads.

It's a about a girl called Amari who uses a headset to explore a virtual world in her computer known as the "Enhanced Reality".

There are 12 effects to collect.

The game has 2 endings depending on how the game was played.

There are 3 minigames.

I hope you enjoy it.

If you find any bugs, glitches or any weird shit like that please feel free to tell me.

Very promising game, I was impressed. What a nice surprise, I'm eager to look into it more. You put a lot of thought into this and while it feels like a fangame there's enough it in to help it stand out. We need more like this.

My only real complaint is a nitpick, but I don't like the protagonists sprite much. Mostly the eyes. Again just a nitpick though.

-Fixed door opening animation stuttering.

-Fixed 2 maps where the Data Stream effect sound wouldnt work.

-Fixed an instance where you weren't supposed to be able to use the 9 key.

-Fixed an error with the couch in the left most world.

Hopefully this covers all the fuck ups I had in the game. Thank you all so much for playing lads. I'm really glad people are enjoying it.

"The whole Kancolle situation" is an entirely different matter though, because all circumstances point to the ban only existing out of fear that a fan could make a better KanColle game than the original (which wouldn't be any difficult at all). Kadokawa owns a fuckton of series and they don't care about fangames based on the vast majority of them, hell even Kemono Friends which they murdered so soon after it exploded is free game for fan games.
But yeah, in any case it's always great to have more mirrors. I've suffered a lot with the official downloads for 2kki in the past too so it feels nice having another place to download it from, so thanks for the paranoia.

Anyway I hated this game at first and thought it was going to be another boring clone, but it turns out to be really well-made with a pretty neat mystery at the core and some of the best events I've seen. It also updated recently too. For someone who was growing tired of most new fangames, this one really surprised me.

Except it's not, I'm an old ubuu user and game developer not related to Astralshift, you can ask a mod, sorry to break your bubble but people can say good things about things you don't like.

In addition, what of what I said is false? It is the biggest modern game from that small tumblr community, the game's numbers are huge, it got tons of fanart, love and even some cosplay, that's a lot more than most little RPGM people will ever achieve.

By the way from the looks of it, you guys sure spend a lot of time trying to slam Astralshift, I've only said their game is very relevant and look at the reactions, like the art theft accusation which, after googling I realized it was nothing but a misunderstanding.

Like you're all almighty saints, let me quote Pinkuboa, the owner of the jam, about it:

>it’s not uncommon for the PM team to smack talk others behind their backs.

Isn't that what lots of you do to each other in the confession blogs? Pinkuboa's unprovoked agression against ubuu here >>13387 is a good example.

As I said earlier ITT, PM isn't even my kind of game, I don't like it, it represents everything I am tired of in a "horror RPG", little girls in dresses, cute atmosphere, the sounds, the haunted house, it's all about overused tropes, we have been making fun of that for ages here, but you know what? I think that's precisely why the game was successful and that's all I have been saying.

Do you think people should make a map of every fangame? First, there should be an up-to-date map of .flow.

I'm not good at mapmaking. I just made this base. It is missing some areas, and has no links.

Why are people ignoring this?

Almost all fangames aren't iconic enough to spend all that time to make maps of. The original is a classic while everything else is derivative, like a bonus feature or something. Why put the effort when the point isn't to site-see, but to experience the same feeling of going into the unknown?

For the same reason you aren't doing much either. It's not worth the time nor the effort.

Yume Nisshi, Dream Graffiti and .flow have maps like this, as far as I'm aware. 2kki might too but with the immense size and constant updates it'd be a headache to keep up.

I'd like to see maps for yuque, it's not a particularly big game.

anyone ever come across this area before? just found it and feel like there must be some way to get past the cones (event perhaps?). Can't find anything about it.

 No.13338

That is in the Back Alleyway. If you keep going back and forth on this screen and the screen before it, eventually the cones will be gone.

Is this place still active? I've been trying to play .flow and any version I download never gets past the opening cutscene before crashing with this error.

 No.13210

Oh, important to note that I do have Locale Emulator installed and I have run the game using the admin option.

 No.13211

a) Doesn't seem like that locale emulator is working at all, just change your locale manually to japanese if you really want to play
b) Yes we're active, and
c) Less than five minutes are necessary to notice this thread >>229

 No.13213

There's a thread specifically for help on getting fangames to run. You might want to see it in case somebody had the same issue.
Personally, the text from that window tells nothing. There's no japanese message though and that might mean your locale is messed up. I would recommend not using LocaleEmu and just changing your System Locale under the Language options. Nothing really prejudicial happens and your system won't turn ching chong but it will be able to display Japanese text correctly.
Source: Did a Windows 10 clean install recently, changed locale was enough to get .flow running. 2kki needs the RTP though, but .flow works simply with changing your System Locale.

And yes, this place is still fairly active, even though we're mostly the same 10-15 people posting.

Sorry about that, I should have taken a look around. I really appreciate all the help, and it's cool to see at least a small regularly active community still. Thanks!

Okay, maybe this is some horribly mangled composite memory… but I remember seeing screenshots of a game that was supposed to be a cross between a survival horror game and a farm simulator. It was 2D and top-down as far as I remember, but it didn't have the 16-bit graphics of your typical YN fangame. The devs said it started out as a YN fangame, but wasn't anymore. Several screenshots were put out and it looked really atmospheric and unique, but it was cancelled.

I don't know if a demo or anything more substantial than just those screenshots was ever put out, but I just want to see those screenshots again or at least find out what that game was called or have some closure of knowing that I'm not just making this up… like I said, this could be a horribly mangled composite memory, so take any and every detail with a massive grain of salt, but if ANY of this sounds at all familiar, please let me know.
