/story/ - Collaborative storytelling (i.e. someone posts a premise and each post continues the story where the last left off)

/robo/ - Robotics and machine consciousness

/neckbeard/ - Card games (Probably already done. Why the hell don't we have a list? It gets annoying to scroll through /warc/ every time.)

/voc/ - Vocaroo threads (Uboaters make music, get to hear what each other sounds like, do impressions, etc.)

/memo/ - Childhood memories. (I'm hoping it won't become a board entirely about child abuse, but this is Uboachan, so I wouldn't count on it.)

Also, have a microwave gun. It cooks your skin when you get too close.

What martial art do you want to learn?

I have a good friend who took Judo for 2 years, it looks like a lot of fun, and very effective.

Apparently a lot of martial arts schools are scams that just teach you flashy stuff instead of actual useful defense techniques (I've heard this about Karate from people who practice other arts.)

> have a good friend who took Judo for 2 years, it looks like a lot of fun, and very effective

I trained Judō for 2 years, more or less, when I was 10~, but because I was pretty anxious all the time I never advanced any belt from white, which is a shame, and now I'm really regretting it.
Yes, indeed, it's pretty fun, useful; and it's not actually that hard; you may want to train your body a bit, though. Trying to bring your opponent down without strength is a bad idea and often ends with your opponent coming in from the defenseless opening.

I'm the Kendō dude from the other thread, and I'd like to learn something involving sword training.

>Apparently a lot of martial arts schools are scams that just teach you flashy stuff instead of actual useful defense techniques (I've heard this about Karate from people who practice other arts.)

I think it depends which place you are training and what you're learning. Some schools/institutions with big names (such as derivated institutions of real japanese Martial Art dōjō) tend to be the place you want to go if you want to learn well, but they also are expensive.
Other place are good while not being "parented" by that kind of institutions.

As for the flashy movements, karate and other "flying" fighting styles tend to be the main target of those people that actually don't teach useful techniques and only "candy-eye" kicks. Other kind of martial arts should not have this problem, but it could happen.

I'm not really sure how to structure this post. I got back from practice just over half an hour ago. My form is getting less shitty as time goes on, and I'm starting to get used to the nunchucks now. I've been only been at at a few months, and even though I'm still pretty awful is significantly better than I was when I started. I can practice longer and more intensely, and I can kick to my face level now. Seeing progress is great, I want to keep going. Teacher wants me to compete in a tournament in late July. Gotta keep practicing.

 No.2759

That's pretty cool man. Good luck in the tournament.

 No.2760

Just got back from practice a little while ago. Teacher had me work on my side kick today. It's getting better. I practiced on on of those mannequin punching bags things for a while, then I broke a board. That was kind of cool, it was a good way to illustrate what proper form can do. I practiced nunchaku stuff with one of the more experienced students for a bit, and he commented that I was much better than when I started. That was nice. I like seeing myself improve, and the cool thing about martial arts is that is so vast, I'll always be learning.

 No.2761

Not much to report. I've been working on my form and nunchaku techniques, making some progress. Teacher expects me to begin learning a more advanced tiger form soon, and we're set to start full contact free sparring next month. I'm pretty psyched.

 No.2762

It's been a little while since I last checked in. I have been practicing as usual. Things should be getting interesting soon, we start sparring seriously Tuesday night. I'll have something that's truly worth posting then.

 No.2763

I went in to the school today, apparently no sparring tonight. Maybe later this week. I've started to learn to dual wield nunchucks, so that's something.

Anyone here practices Kendou?
I'd love to give it a try but I am not sure about bokken's quality, where to buy one, and I'm pretty sure there aren't any Dojo in my city. However it's pretty nice to hear stories from students.

Also, does somebody here can sit seiza without problems? I don't find it particularly hard but because I have problems with my knee and hip bones, when I try to get up, they hurt like I've been in that position all my life. Nothing that a few minutes relaxing my legs can't cure, but if I ever find myself staying like that and then needing to get up fast, I'd be already dead since my opponent could easily kill me.

 No.2767

>>2766

Seiza is meant to hurt unless one practises it regularly, consider that Japanese people do it since they're little, that's how they get used to it.

Also, did a bit of Kendo (wish my keyboard had the 'long o' handy, can't stand the 'ou' romanisation) and didn't like it one bit. Very, very, very repetitive especially in the early stages, good exquipment is expensive, and it's probably the least useful martial art in today's world - unless you go around with a wooden sword it'll do zilch for you in the mean streets. Minus extra points if you dislike loud sounds: a kendo dojo sounds like the set of a bad period dorama.

>Seiza is meant to hurt unless one practises it regularly, consider that Japanese people do it since they're little, that's how they get used to it.

Yeah. I've been practicing regularly since a month or so, 3~5 times everyday, from 10 to 20 minutes. While I knew Seiza is meant to hurt and that japanese people do get used to it because they basically do since little, what has been bugging me is that most of the comments I read about it are about "pinches and little pain", or "my ankles and fibula hurt" rather than some pain in the knees while trying to stand up.
But now that I rethink about it it might be me thinking I'm a snowflake. It's weird because I don't have problems sitting nor enduring the time I take, but when I try to get up my knees just give up at the pain.

>Also, did a bit of Kendo (wish my keyboard had the 'long o' handy, can't stand the 'ou' romanisation) and didn't like it one bit

Yeah, I dislike it too but I was kinda lazy and ended up using baka romanji.

Crap, that is kinda disappointing. Kendō was supposed to be both a way to teach the body and mind, while meditating and becoming one with your sword and movements. If that is not what you find in the dōjō, it certainly might not be suitable for what I was looking for. I'll move my eyes to kenjutsu and aikidō, then. Though I don't like it that much.
As for the "going out with a bokken in the streets", well, I actually don't get out too often, and if you get stopped by the policeman or something you just can tell them you're going to train.

Oh, man, I really the idea of training as a swordsmanship, so guess I can manage to get a shinai and do some basics watching youtube videos, but not having a sensei nor opponents is just terrible, and from what I've seen, there's nothing that resembles what I'm looking for.
