Maybe the twist is that none of them really are as happy as they let on, and they just constantly say they are to themselves and others in an attempt to delude themselves? Maybe they're happy and love being alive but are still social fuckups; maybe, and I know this is really crazy, they live in a universe where being socially anxious or autistic or what have you is accepted and nobody really messes with people like that, and they're able to get occasional good friends if they want them?
