Now that the dust has settled and the game is 6 years old. How did you feel about it?.
R: 3 / I: 0
og yn fan who was obsessed for years (prob to cope w irl) here. bought yndd when i had some money despite the backlash and the loss of ambiguity that the original had.

i have to confess that i play this game on my switch lite in the middle of the night. lights off, no discord, no phone, nothing. just me and yndd. it's… kinda relaxing, i gotta say. i like to wander around and not think about solving the puzzles in a way or find stuff in a too serious way. because of the influence yn had on me growing up, the horror atmosphere feels… like home. so, i "explore" yn for maybe 30 minutes or so till i fall asleep. it really feels like going back home, and i feel safe. just like somehow i did back then while playing the original. like going on a walk while your parents fight or something terrible going on, but you're stuck in front of a screen, projecting your need for escapism onto yn.

can anyone relate to this very specific feeling?

i wish i could play yn or well-known fangames on a handheld console, but this is sadly the closest we'll probably ever get to that.

-Dream Diary- Soundtrack

Posted this on tumblr, but figured y'all would want this too.

-Dreamcast- is the unofficial release of the Dream Diary soundtrack.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1m0_KsuO5GgEuQHRzFBcrFTcx2YpobRz2/view?usp=drivesdk
These are files directly ripped from the games files with little to no alteration.

I may have not labeled certain worlds properly as some remixes are incredibly hard to connect with the original counterpart.

Returning tracks like OG Nasu were not included, simply because other albums have featured them.

I didn’t include the Ao Oni Tracks either as I don’t know if those are straight rips from their original game.

Most of the titles have references to previously released versions of the original YN OST, manga and light novel. Have fun if you can recognize them!
Hope you guys enjoy!

Anyone knows if someone (especially on Japaneese YN community) tried contacting Kadokawa to ask if they could give more proof about the fact that Kikiyama worked on this game or even approved it?

Because you're all building your conspiracy theories about Kikiyama but is anyone even tried contacting Kadokawa or game devs? If the answer is no, than you are pathetic, people.

I really see no reasons for Kadokawa to develop this game just for profit. Be honest, is YN fandom that big? No. Than is it worth faking presence of Kikiyama to get attention? No, because YN fandom is not that big. Is there a 100% guarantee that YN fandom will love this game and buy it? No, in fact it is opposite.

Than why, anon? They could've easily pick Ib or With House and gain more profit for it and everyone would've be happy. Why Yume Nikki?

What if they've really found the way to contact Kikiyama?

Maybe Yumenikki Dream Diary is a noncanon sequel and the bloodstain you interact with in the beginning is a giveaway that Madotsuki jumped. She's either in a coma, her brain is having hallucinations since she's dying or in the theory that the jump was symbolic, she went even deeper into whatever limbo she's in.

The death of YN

Mark my words, YN is going to be destroyed beyond redemption with this new game.

They have basically made a compendium of the most disgusting sexualizing artwork (miniskirt) and theories (HURR EVERYTHINK IS SEXUUL, SHE WUZ RAPED SEE? SHE'S CRYING IN FRONT OF KEEUKEEUKUN THIS MEANS SHE WUZ RAPED AND EVRYTHINK IS BCUZ OF THAT). And hamfisted bullying shit (just wait until you see the school scenario, 5 gold coins say it's going to be a guilt trip about how madotsuki was bullied by birdfaced girls). This is going to be youtuber bait, it's reputation tarnished. Ironic weebs are going to laugh at the whole concept while getting youtube money making facial reactions to "le epic weird weeb game".

This game has so many things wrong that the question is, what did they get right? This game is supposed to be about exploration, the player must decide by himself how is he feeling about it, the player must not have some tard theories hamfisted onto him by showing madotsuki cry or something like that.
>b-but muh normies won't figure things out without help
I don't give a fuck, the original game was emotion-less, madotsuki's facial expression didn't change, she didn't cry. This way you decided what zones and enviroments wanted to convey or meant. This is tainting and sullying the original game and madotsuki herself, we don't know why madotsuki refused to get out of her room or why she jumped off her balcony, AND THAT'S THE WAY IT'S MEANT TO BE, we shouldn't know. (And no, she wasn't raped, stop projecting your shitty fetishes and freudian fraud imagery onto madotsuki, you disgusting cuck).

Even thought I used some strong language I hope this thread doesn't get deleted because of it. It's just how I feel about this and I'd like to see how people here feel about this too.

Who is AQUILA?

Something interesting about Yume Nikki: Dream Diary is that the music is all done by Diana June except for the main theme which is composed by "AQUILA".
Why do they go out of their way to emphasize that this person made the theme if they are so unknown and seem to have no other music out there? I looked up bands or artists called AQUILA and found one band that seemed to have nothing to do with it.
In the credits, after Kikiyama is credited, Aquila comes on the page after and is at the same space where Kikiyama's credit was before.
This also happens in the trailer of the game, after "full co-operation with Kikiyama" comes "main theme: AQUILA", or it's on the same page.

It's also put in the news release and on the steam page. It seems really odd that someone would be advertised like that like it's a big deal, but have no music available.
Something I did notice however was that when searching for it in Japanese, AQUILA sounds a lot like "Akira".
An officially licensed story to Yume Nikki was released January 7 this year. Around the same time the game came out for free on Steam. The author goes by the name "Akira" and nothing else.
AQUILA? AKIRA? Pretty similar.

Here's my big ole' theory

*MAJOR SPOILERS*
(Part 1/4, rest is the first couple replies)

-So I never pulled this much from the original game, but in this reimagining I am pretty sure there are strong themes here of gender identity. I know many people have joked about this theory before, but I think there's actual evidence here. The only bathrooms Madotsuki ever enters in YYDD are men's restrooms. To get the secret ending (and to finish the game) you have to activate the symbol of Venus aka the symbol representing female, and then enter into a giant Venus symbol to enter. In the sketchbook there's two pictures you get of Madotsuki that are practically the same, but one with her eyes closed and one with them open. Most related pictures are next to each other in her Dream Diary, but for this one a picture of her eyes closed are next to KyuuKyuu-kun, and her picture of her eyes open is a few pages later next to the picture of the feminine mannequin. Literally eyes closed next to the most phallic character in the game, eyes opened next to the character most with a 'female form'. Add to this the area you get the flute in the mall looks even more like a clinic than the original, and to add to this O-Man's updated look looks a lot more like a doctor, there's character's alluding to genitalia-esque objects on the walls, and E-Man who you go to see in the clinic gives you the Flute. I don't know quite yet on this one if I'm reaching here, but all I'll say is I never got this theory in the original but have it pretty strongly in YNDD.

-I'm going to cover this more in the following points, but I think Madotsuki is a shut-off NEET not because she was raped (I don't think there's evidence for that) or even because of gender identity things. I think it's more straight forward, she experienced multiple scars over the years that made her more reclusive and eventually just shut off from the world. Rather than one traumatic event she experienced several over-time events that made her close off. This also ties in well to unlocking the final door by re-experiencing everything and then when you go out of your apartment having to survive your inner fears (that shadow thing) to get the happy ending.

-Monoko is dead. In the original game the stop/start light changing her form was a bit suspicious and the specifics of the differences, but this remake somewhat spells it out where you can reach her by going to the world end event related to death to find her, and when we see her more twisted form she gets surrounded by blue flames (if you don't know, in Japan blue flames are associated with death and spirits). Also would explain why her form in the remake is so underplayed to Monoe and hidden away. This one I don't think many would disagree with as it's kind of blatant. Monoko's area achievement is also titled, "Doomed", and the description for this is that you played with a 'lonely child'.

-I know many people theorize that Monoko and Monoe are sisters (and for obvious reasons to suspect this), but I don't think Monoe is crying over a dead sister from the evidence. I'm more inclined to believe the black and white similarities have more to do with 'ex-friends', they're just memories to Madotsuki now. Monoko died at some point, probably when Madotsuki was young. If you look at the recently released Yume Nikki character height comparision chart, Monoko is considerably shorter than either Madotsuki or Monoe. I think she died while Madotsuki was of a similar age. I also am wondering if hide and seek had something to do with her death? In the original game she's hiding in the middle of nowhere, and in the remake she plays hide and seek with you until you find her in her twisted blue-flame form. I'm wondering if she died playing some children's game like hide'n'seek?

The game is currently on sale. It inconsistently shows up as 9.99 or 7.99, but if you were interested in playing it before but didn't want to spend 19.99, here's your chance to get it cheaper. I'm still kind of in the middle with this game. It's not horrible but not great, either. 7.99 seems fair.

Time to dial it back guys.

A lot of you were really pissed off regarding Yume Nikki Dream Diary at first, for a number of sometimes violently conflicting reasons, and I stepped back and let that play out for a while, but I'm restoring some order now. It's time for /yndd/ to calm down a few notches. Take another look at the site-wide rules and guidelines, and expect those to apply to this board from now on.

Flaming, lame trolling attempts, personal attacks, derailment, and other rule-breaking behavior will be moderated here starting now. This is not /ot/. Take a deep breath and cool off, or I will hand out warnings and bans.

It finally released Ubuu, what did you think about Kikiyama's seminal release?

Looks pretty bad, to be honest.
R: 38 / I: 4
ITT things you thought were kinda neat.

Most of the game followed this awful pattern of turning existing content weirdly hostile or morphing it into puzzle elements. This is the one change that really caught me off guard in that its purpose seems to be entirely thematic instead of just catering to YNDD's new focus on horror and puzzles. I don't really know what to make of it but I thought it was interesting, which is probably my most positive response to anything in the whole game.

Can somebody help post all of the promotional art and concept art that had been released through the countdown site, teasers, etc?
Asking because there were larger, hi-res, transparent versions of several characters art released on the desktop version of the countdown site that was only available in a few places, and in general a lot of the art is scattered around different places.
I'd like to get one resource going for all the high quality promo and concept art so far, as it's probably one of the best things to come out of the game.
R: 20 / I: 4

You know what?

Like the other 60% who seems to like it, I don't care that Yume Nikki -Dream Diary- is mediocre. Overpriced? Yes. Unfaithful? Kinda. Playable? Pretty much. It's interesting to see another's take on the universe. Like the light novel and manga, it isn't a carbon copy, but another take. They never claimed it to be a faithful copy of the original. Those who like it will keep playing, and those who dislike it will eventually get bored crying over it and go away.

Post your biggest fears here

Having a thread to contain some of the negativity might do us all some good, so I'll start:

Don't want to be an alarmist, and I'm someone looking forward to this new game so far, but chances MIGHT be high that the bicycle effect is gone. The shift to 3D could mean 'shorter' areas, more complications with physics, so if they up Madotsuki's speed or even add in a running option then bicycle would be unnecessary and that headache would be gone. Another thing I noticed is that the 'chicken embryo' from the world you find the Bicycle in has been moved to the Mural World. Possibly because that world is gone now?

I don't want to believe it but it's a possibility. Just keep this in mind.

Yume Nikki: Dream Diary

Hey, it's kinda strange there's no thread for the NEW YUME NIKKI GAME?! (or the Steam release of the original)

Here's a link to the countdown site for the new project:
https://promo.kadokawa.co.jp/gamecountdown/

I wonder if that's when the new game release? Or will we just get teased with another trailer or something? Also the name game is being published by Playism, cool! I hope the creator can make some money.

And here is the extended trailer for the new project! Crazy looking stuff, very excited. We're very lucky to get another game after so many years… hopefully this site can continue to live too.
https://youtu.be/dc0KzL1LjBg

I guess the new project is called "Yume Nikki: Dream Diary" which is obviously interesting because the subtitle is just the English title. I guess this could be in part to recognize the game's fan-base in English speaking countries, and makes it clear the new title will be marketed to us too.

so, what's your general feelings on the game and how it will be received? it seems with "other recent indie juggernauts" like they're trying to emulate or at least get a response similar to undertale

do you think it's going to actually get that response? i honestly don't see it being one of those games that'll get the WHAT IS THIS CRAZY GAME?? PART 59 treatment, but you never know how much kadokawa or gaming youtubers might try to push it, so maybe i'll be eating my words
R: 56 / I: 9

I'm actually more excited because of the trailer

I feel like this community is being a bit harsh with this game. They did say that this IS a reboot. Of course they aren't gonna just make a 3D version of the game. What I want to know is with this new 2D perspective, what are they gonna do with it? This might be the next little nightmares with a twist. We could deepen this very mysterious plot with this new game. Maybe this could explore some other characterization and different gameplay elements. Possibly this can be a extraordinary puzzle horror game. Look the genre NEEDS this. I'm cautious but also excited. Who knows this might really work.

Some Details/Developer Info Tidbits

http://dreamdiarypodcast.com/episodes-latest/

^ Sourced from Dream Diary Episode 6 Podcast, but I think these details may be appreciated by others on their own.

-So this first point most already know, but the game is being developed primarily by Active Gaming Media Inc. with heavy supervision and support by Kikiyama. They're mostly a translation studio who's translated everything from No More Heroes to Soul Caliber to Little King's Story to Heavest Moon to La-Maluna. They started game development more recently to help indie studios bring games to life, IE they helped develope the recent remake of Suda51's The Silver Case, and apparently have several titles their helping develop right now. Amusingly as the site hasn't updated since Yume Nikki's announcement, but of their "Unannounced" titles it's obvious which one is Yume Nikki in retrospect. This would be their second major project that's not porting or localization after The Silver Case, though.

-The choice of art style is partially down to wanting to bring Yume Nikki to a modern audience. They knew the look of the game would be divisive to fans of the original, but they tried to respect the world of the original while doing their own take.

-The art director of the project nearly had a heart attack when he learned their next project was going to be Yume Nikki, he's a huge fan of the original.

-The game apparently has not been in development for very long, only around 8-9 months. The game started with about 4 people in-house working on it (plus Kikiyama out of house), but has since expanded to around 9-10 people. They've been crunching it a lot and been focusing to make it quality, but with their resources and many on the team being familiar with the source material and having a direct line with the creator it hasn't actually been that hard to develop. They hope to surprise a lot of people with it.

-Everyone working on the team before they started working on the project were given the task to play (or replay) Yume Nikki from start to finish before they began work on it.

-It's a sort of reboot or re-imagining of the original game. There will be more news for the game on January 31st.

-Kikiyama is properly on board with the project, he worked as a designer on the project and personally signed off on everything he chose for them to move forward with on the project and contributed ideas and scrapped ideas for the original for things to be added to it. Everything has gone through and been approved by Kikiyama for this project.

-Apparently how Kikiyama got involved was not that extravagant. They used the public email on Kikiyama's site and got into contact with them. Kikiyama has received a LOT of emails over the years and is not very happy about it, they asked only for people to email them about project relevant stuff. Kikiyama will not be doing interviews or popping up online anytime soon though, they aren't getting involved with the public.

-The team doesn't know exactly what's next for Yume Nikki after this, they'll see how people receive this game first. The door is open for more Yume Nikki in the future, but that's not set in stone either.

Just some tidbits, but all very interesting.
