Hey, it's kinda strange there's no thread for the NEW YUME NIKKI GAME?! (or the Steam release of the original)
Here's a link to the countdown site for the new project:
https://promo.kadokawa.co.jp/gamecountdown/I wonder if that's when the new game release? Or will we just get teased with another trailer or something? Also the name game is being published by Playism, cool! I hope the creator can make some money.
And here is the extended trailer for the new project! Crazy looking stuff, very excited. We're very lucky to get another game after so many years… hopefully this site can continue to live too.
https://youtu.be/dc0KzL1LjBgI guess the new project is called "Yume Nikki: Dream Diary" which is obviously interesting because the subtitle is just the English title. I guess this could be in part to recognize the game's fan-base in English speaking countries, and makes it clear the new title will be marketed to us too.

>>1I'm honestly nervous about it not being too good. For a "western audience" means it's going to go for what a western audience would want out of Yume Nikki, which probably means jump scares and whatever. I mean sure I'm fairly optimistic and excited but at the same time I feel a little worried about things not going smoothly. If Kikiyama is really on board though things will probably be relatively good, but regardless I'm ready to ride this through with my Yume Nikki-loving friends. The game changed my life and I'm passionate enough to want to ride through any of this shit; it being official is mindblowing and it means a lot of attention is going to be drawn to it, so even if the game is bad it'll probably be a fun ride to scream about with them. If it's just mediocre then hey, I can talk about the pros and cons of the game with people. If it's awesome then fuck yeah, I get to play an awesome Yume Nikki successor.
Regardless of what happens, I'm a huge fan and the lone fact that I get to experience this is pretty far out since I expected this game to just be left alone forever. We're most certainly getting some kind of ride, so here's hoping that whatever it is, it's a fun one.

I think that's the penname of the writer. A story of a girl who loses her way inside a world that looks like the inside of a broken TV, where she will face characters she's met in the past. Fans and also people who haven't played "Yume Nikki" will be able to enjoy this game that resembles a VN and will definitely feel touched by the uniqueness of the charming atmosphere of the world of Yume Nikki.

>>18>game that resembles a VNI think this + the style of the comiket posters is making me imagine a 2D, surreal Night In The Woods or Fran Bow style exploration game, with VN-esque pop-up character interactions (a bit like persona in that last regard, i guess).
honestly, i'm pretty okay with this. I feel like kadokawa/pretty much any studio would struggle to capture the unique feel of a traditional rpg maker yume nikki game, so approaching it from another perspective means it isn't trying to copy/replace something it can't be. also, if it turns out to be a horrible pile of shit, it's distanced itself enough from the original that it can be written off without affecting anything too much.
as with most things, i think it's hard to say how it'll turn out at this point & depends on the people making it themselves (there are loads of ways they could potentially screw it up; imagine a talking madotsuki), but i can imagine yn working with that kind of genre if it's handled properly. cautiously hopeful.
No.26
>>25>imagine a talking madotsukiOh we got that, the manga. What a pile of shit. They couldn't have picked a better artist for a Yume Nikki manga though, so what a shame Tomizawa had to be saddled with that ridiculous writer.
No.27
>>26I think a talking Madotsuki can be done right, and I think the manga didn't pull it off too terribly. Rather, the actual pacing and writing of the manga was what made it terrible. The art was good and I enjoyed a few little bits of it but man it was just honestly kind of a mess; I've legit read fanfictions that were more competent and exciting than that manga.
No.28

No.29
>>14You are probably thinking about the mobile game
>>20>>19>>15It is indeed shit. I read it. It's a fan theory (and an average one at best) written in an narrative way. Basically, Mado finds a few characters, and she thinks about who they are (Monoko was a childhood friend that was run over by a car, Monoe was the sister of Monoko, that always blamed Monoe, Masada was some family counselor that tried to help her with the trauma and she fell in love with, Poniko is Masada's lover and a bitch that for some unexplained reason ripped her heart appart in the most cruel way possible). If it was a post here, I would maybe think it's interesting, but as a VN it's really lacking.
No.30
>>27No one is being fair with the manga, actually. The first few chapters were kind of all right, they were just presenting the setting, but everyone and their mother kept complaining about silly things, before seeing where it went. Then, it got a hiatus, and next chapter changed the pace drastically (it was the Poniko chapter). It was clearly axed. Of course it ended up being a mess. And it's a real shame because precisely, the Poniko chapter showed how much potential there was in the exploration part, with the art being so good. But we didn't get to see any of it.
No.31

>>30You must have read a different manga, I remember how Mars-San turned into some fucking alarm and Masada was an evil mastermind? Unique interpretations are one thing but this was just batshit in the bad way.
No.36
>>34That was after the change of pace. Of course it's messy if you want to cramp everything into just one volume. You keep judging the manga for what it ended up being after everyone made it become what it is. The manga is all right until Uboa shows up. Then it falls apart (the pace is bad, the explanations are lacking, the other characters just make a one panel appearance even though there was something clearly thought for them, etc.). And that's the exact moment they decided to cancel it. That's why I say people were not fair to the manga.
No.37
>>34>>36I actually kind of liked how Masada was handled. I didn't see him as evil, just kind of as some strange guardian and mender of the dreamworld. Mars wasn't that bad. I don't mind it being batshit because unique interpretations are always fun, and Yume Nikki is basically a haven for that sort of thing. Shame what happened to the manga as I think good things could've been done with it, but even then I just feel like the good stuff was far and few between and even the first few parts were kind of average.

Anyways, the thread is getting a little off-topic; so what did everybody think about the trailer? I don't believe it's been touched on much in this thread.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dc0KzL1LjBgSo? What do you think? The voice acting is putting me a little on edge and it's kind of hard to see anything much from the trailer since it's just kind of a psychedelic mess, but at the same time I feel like it conveys a nice sense of what the atmosphere is going to be like. That ending scene with the moon and the droning music is probably my favorite, and honestly feels like it could've been an amazing location in a YN fangame of sorts, or even YN itself. Kind of reminds me of the Puddle World a little bit, actually.
No.40
>>38That's still arguably fun, on a staring a trainwreck kind of way.
No.41
>>39What worries me about this PV is that it looks like they are trying to go with the creepy/scary/jumpscare/horror style, instead of the surreal and unsettling style of Yume nikki. Yume nikki was never about those things.
The OST Sounds good tho. The music at the beginning makes me hope for NASU 2.
But anyway, this trailer didn't show shit of the actual game, and at this point it's best to wait these 9 days and see what the game looks like.
I hope it's not Visual Novel, I would take a remake over a Visual Novel.
No.42
>>41>jumpscare/creepypastaYeah I'm worried about this as well. It looks like it might be trying too hard to go down that direction and that makes me a little disappointed if that's the case, but it really is best to just wait and find out. That girl in that black image kind of reminds me of Monoe or something but the tone of it just looks like it might be trying a little too hard. I hope I'm proven wrong. The NASU opening made me really happy and I enjoyed it a lot, but otherwise I'm not sure what to say about the rest of the trailer. Once again I'll say that the voice acting felt a little forced and unnecessary, and I think they should just stick to electronic noises or whatever for the characters in the game; they're a lot more unique and charming.
No.43
>>42>>41So much this. I want it to be good, but it's not giving me any good feeling.
It sounds good, it looks good, but the way the present everything feels so off. It's as if it wants you to be on tension the whole time, while the game was pretty relaxed most of the time… and let's forget about the voice acting.
I think more people in this fandom need to watch benibame's videos (or even gobou's), to get rid of that image that Yume Nikki is some kind of terror game.
No.44
>>4It's going to be like Corpse Party because western audiences love Corpse Party and it makes the best use of the high-res portraits while still retaining the topdown exploration gameplay.
I hate it already. The portraits substract from the abstractness of the game, it's like nobody understood what made this game so good in the first place. Fuck my life.
No.45
>>44Y'know, personally I never really got the appeal of Corpse Party. It's the absolute most generic J-horror game I've ever seen. It's like a bad Blair Witch ripoff in a spOoOoOoOoky school where a loli ghost girl tries to brutally kill everyone for absolutely no good reason whatsoever. It's only good for gurofags to jack off to.
What warrants it's 50+ spinoffs that try to add more lore to a plot that doesn't really have room for worldbuilding in the first place? And beyond that, all of it's spinoffs introduce five new characters in each new game who will just be killed in the first 10 minutes. Will they just finish Dead Patient already? That at least has some potential.
No.46
>>45I wasn't impressed by it either, anon
Every time I see it mentioned or praised I can't help but feel like I'm missing something
No.47
>>45I've seen people being wrong before, but wow, anon, you are on a whole new level.
People like Corpse Party because they like the characters. Thee`y get attached to them, and want to save them, even if they know there's no hope. So they keep playing. While there's bound to be some people in it for the gore, it's just like the people that are into YN because of the horror. Of course, the simple gameplay and exploration elements were important, not to talk about the music and voice acting.
Now, there are not that many spinoffs. There's Cemetery, a novel that follows Naho and her paranormal adventures (2nd volume never released, and Naho is fucking dead now anyway), there's Dead Patient, that at this rate will never be finished, and a manga called Another Child. Everything else follows the main timeline (Blood Covered, Book of Shadows, 2U and Blood Drive), with a few short stories here and there. One could even argue that Dead Patient is a sequel to BD, but since there's not really much connecting them so far, I guess it's fine to say it's a spinoff.
No, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's amazing or anything. But it's still good.

Fuck I still remember listening to Madotsuki in Wonderland from 24 Effects and seeing the countdown timer for the first time. The music and timer synced up so perfectly in tone and it just created this chilling experience of "holy fuck I can't believe Yume Nikki is getting something new what the shit". Of course I winded down and realized the reality of the situation, but it was only a damn week ago since this whole train started. I still hold the sentiment from my original post about me just being happy to have something new to react to with other Yume Nikki lovers, but it's just like, shit, the weight of this is stunning.

Personally, while I don't want the new project to be a modern horror jumpscare fest, or, horror at all, for that matter, I'd rather they resort to that than fail for not being able to capture the magic of the original. >>400Actually nevermind. That original sketch looked so close to something you'd see in the sewers that I swore it was from the original game. I checked, and it's not. It even has those weird little hand things you see in this sketch, here.
Bikdut is a fun name but it doesn't flow off the tongue that easily. Something more Yume Nikki-ish like "the dribbling monster" or "Awadatsu", following the trends of calling things monsters or giving them Japanese names based on something. Awadatsu is Japanese for "ooze", though, "Tereru" is for "to hang" or "to drop" which kind of fits his head. Awadatsu-san has a nice ring to it though. Tereru-san isn't bad either, but "dribbling monster" fits his inhuman nature. We could wait until the game releases and see if he has anything to do with Mars-san, and if so, we could name him something related to Mars like Phobos-san.
I don't mean to get so indepth into this but it's kind of fun to talk about. It might be best to see the characters functionality in game first, and even then, I think it's something that everyone has to agree on.

>>418>Until there's a kikiyamaHP update, this is 100% fraud, end of story. This is fucking stupid.
I hope you realize you're setting up a pretty much impossible endgame if you ever want this confirmed, as Kikiyama has no intention of interacting with the community ever again likely.
So you're just looking for an easy excuse to call this a fraud likely because you just don't like the way the game looks.

IT'S FUCKING NOT.
No.429
>>427Alternatively, instead of being a fraud, everything that's been released so far has been completely true. Kikiyama doesn't want to be involved on the public side, and the website isn't updated because they don't want it to draw all that attention when Dream Diary already has its own site set up and everything. And why bother? Because a handful of people are skeptical?
It could be IP theft. Or Kikiyama could just be being reclusive.
No.439

No.441
>>378Oh god I love Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou. Good taste anon. And yeah, it has a very dreamlike and quiet explorative feel. I consume a lot of media with that kind of atmosphere (Kino no Tabi, Oyasumi PunPun, Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, Mushishi, etc.) so I didn't immediately draw comparisons with YN, but it definitely has a similar quality.
As for this new project, I'm going to wait until I see it in motion.
No.443
>>429This logic makes no senses whatsoever; not wanting to be involved in the public side… wtf does that even mean? It's not like he's updating the site with his house address or anything or even speaking to anybody. Why wouldn't you want attention to a website you created? Pretty sure having the Yume nikki on steam would be a pretty big deal for him. As well, the link to kikiyama hp is present on Yume nikkis game page. "Why bother"… because for years hundreds of people have been wondering if this man/woman is still alive on this godamn planet. No.450
>>447I think these aren't bad at all but I prefer the armless stubby look they had in game. I'm not sure if Kiki intended for them to be outright humanoid. I do hope the other weirder looking characters get to actually remain weird looking, though I can imagine certain changes being necessary for 3D modeling and animation.
I hope fanartists won't take these as the "actual canon" look for the characters. Interpreting them is much of the fun, and this game should just be considered another interpretation like the manga, even if it has Kiki's supervision.

It's clear already that this has diverged a lot from the original game, so I don't think we're looking at a straight up 3D remake.
No.464
There's something that seems to tip me off about the 2.5d thing - and that is the dilapidated school screenshot. Had this be an actual 2.5 environment, Madotsuki would not be farther off the screen or they would even do enough space for chairs on front.
There is also the oblique angle on the Karaoke street and the balloon to the Pastel Cones. Everything seems to point out to a fixed camera a la Silent Hill.
No.465
>>464I'm wondering if it will be a side-scroller, a lot of the screens seem to imply that.

No.472
>>443So Kikiyama should want to update their personal website because other people want them to update their personal website. Got it. And a person who has diligently gone out of their way to maintain their anonymity should definitely want to be directly interacting with their fans, especially since their fans want them to. And they can't possibly just want to work on their stuff behind the scenes now that someone else can take care of the more bothersome PR aspect.
It's completely inconceivable.
>>465We've already got some screenshots that make me think it's not, like her room and the Pink Sea, but some of the others like in this recent batch definitely do have a sidescroller feel.
They've gone out of their way to clearly show her face, though. I wonder if that's just a stylistic choice for the screenshots, or if it'll be a thing in the game itself too.

No.684

No.685
>>684There's three things I can think of.
1. The big K stands for "Kikiyama".
2. The big K stands for "Kodakawa"
3. The K looks the way it does because the name of a really important character starts with the letter K.
No.686

No.688
>>684Maybe it's capitalized because of the little tsu that a double letter in Romaji implies of the Japanese spelling. There is a verbal "jump" at that point when pronouncing it. So they could be stylizing that.

http://yumenikki.wikia.com/wiki/Pain_Blob No.721
A thing that worries me about the screenshots and what've seen so far is the general tone shift from Yume Nikki. Yume Nikki felt neutral in that the areas it conveyed weren't meant to be spoopy, it was just a wild dream (aside from 2 or so areas)
The way the lightning is employed in the screenshots (excluding Pink Sea) seems to be going for the scare factor and less for the wows or weirding people out. The countdown artwork also has this darker and edgier approach (Mado looks like a fucking yandere, and don't get me started on Poniko…)
The screenshot were Madotsuki shat herself over Monoe, although funny, seems to be aiming for that horror vibe. It might be because of it's transition to 3D though, because to be frank that's why lots fo the things in the game have the appeal they do, the ambiguity. And it also makes the game feel detached. Heck, some fangames have tried for years to be spoopy and all of them failed. Maybe it's just a difference of perspective.

>>721Anon you replied to here, you explained the problem much better than i did.
The best thing about yume nikki was the atmosphere, it was never trying to be scary in any way, it was just what it was, an exploration game with surreal ambients. It never tried to be anything else, it was just that.
I don't really care if YNDD has bad graphics or stuff like that, I just want it to be recapture that sensation of exploration the original had, but I am really uncertain after what we have seen.

>>721>Mado looks like a fucking yandereShe's just holding the knife but otherwise looks bored as shit. It's not even close to being half as edgy as most of her fanart.
>Don't get me started on PonikoShe definitely has a creepy gaze but it's not too out of line given that she's also Uboa.
Your concerns are valid otherwise though.

>>731It's very very clear that they're purposefully withholding the more interesting stuff, letting out only bits here and there. People have been complaining that all the shown locations are too 'boring' and realistic but that might be the point.
We just have a month to go anyway at least.
