Hey, it's kinda strange there's no thread for the NEW YUME NIKKI GAME?! (or the Steam release of the original)

I guess the new project is called "Yume Nikki: Dream Diary" which is obviously interesting because the subtitle is just the English title. I guess this could be in part to recognize the game's fan-base in English speaking countries, and makes it clear the new title will be marketed to us too.

I'm honestly nervous about it not being too good. For a "western audience" means it's going to go for what a western audience would want out of Yume Nikki, which probably means jump scares and whatever. I mean sure I'm fairly optimistic and excited but at the same time I feel a little worried about things not going smoothly. If Kikiyama is really on board though things will probably be relatively good, but regardless I'm ready to ride this through with my Yume Nikki-loving friends. The game changed my life and I'm passionate enough to want to ride through any of this shit; it being official is mindblowing and it means a lot of attention is going to be drawn to it, so even if the game is bad it'll probably be a fun ride to scream about with them. If it's just mediocre then hey, I can talk about the pros and cons of the game with people. If it's awesome then fuck yeah, I get to play an awesome Yume Nikki successor.

Regardless of what happens, I'm a huge fan and the lone fact that I get to experience this is pretty far out since I expected this game to just be left alone forever. We're most certainly getting some kind of ride, so here's hoping that whatever it is, it's a fun one.

I think this + the style of the comiket posters is making me imagine a 2D, surreal Night In The Woods or Fran Bow style exploration game, with VN-esque pop-up character interactions (a bit like persona in that last regard, i guess).

honestly, i'm pretty okay with this. I feel like kadokawa/pretty much any studio would struggle to capture the unique feel of a traditional rpg maker yume nikki game, so approaching it from another perspective means it isn't trying to copy/replace something it can't be. also, if it turns out to be a horrible pile of shit, it's distanced itself enough from the original that it can be written off without affecting anything too much.
as with most things, i think it's hard to say how it'll turn out at this point & depends on the people making it themselves (there are loads of ways they could potentially screw it up; imagine a talking madotsuki), but i can imagine yn working with that kind of genre if it's handled properly. cautiously hopeful.

It is indeed shit. I read it. It's a fan theory (and an average one at best) written in an narrative way. Basically, Mado finds a few characters, and she thinks about who they are (Monoko was a childhood friend that was run over by a car, Monoe was the sister of Monoko, that always blamed Monoe, Masada was some family counselor that tried to help her with the trauma and she fell in love with, Poniko is Masada's lover and a bitch that for some unexplained reason ripped her heart appart in the most cruel way possible). If it was a post here, I would maybe think it's interesting, but as a VN it's really lacking.

The first few chapters were kind of all right, they were just presenting the setting, but everyone and their mother kept complaining about silly things, before seeing where it went. Then, it got a hiatus, and next chapter changed the pace drastically (it was the Poniko chapter). It was clearly axed. Of course it ended up being a mess. And it's a real shame because precisely, the Poniko chapter showed how much potential there was in the exploration part, with the art being so good. But we didn't get to see any of it.

That was after the change of pace. Of course it's messy if you want to cramp everything into just one volume. You keep judging the manga for what it ended up being after everyone made it become what it is. The manga is all right until Uboa shows up. Then it falls apart (the pace is bad, the explanations are lacking, the other characters just make a one panel appearance even though there was something clearly thought for them, etc.). And that's the exact moment they decided to cancel it. That's why I say people were not fair to the manga.

So? What do you think? The voice acting is putting me a little on edge and it's kind of hard to see anything much from the trailer since it's just kind of a psychedelic mess, but at the same time I feel like it conveys a nice sense of what the atmosphere is going to be like. That ending scene with the moon and the droning music is probably my favorite, and honestly feels like it could've been an amazing location in a YN fangame of sorts, or even YN itself. Kind of reminds me of the Puddle World a little bit, actually.

What worries me about this PV is that it looks like they are trying to go with the creepy/scary/jumpscare/horror style, instead of the surreal and unsettling style of Yume nikki. Yume nikki was never about those things.
The OST Sounds good tho. The music at the beginning makes me hope for NASU 2.

But anyway, this trailer didn't show shit of the actual game, and at this point it's best to wait these 9 days and see what the game looks like.

People like Corpse Party because they like the characters. Thee`y get attached to them, and want to save them, even if they know there's no hope. So they keep playing. While there's bound to be some people in it for the gore, it's just like the people that are into YN because of the horror. Of course, the simple gameplay and exploration elements were important, not to talk about the music and voice acting.

Now, there are not that many spinoffs. There's Cemetery, a novel that follows Naho and her paranormal adventures (2nd volume never released, and Naho is fucking dead now anyway), there's Dead Patient, that at this rate will never be finished, and a manga called Another Child. Everything else follows the main timeline (Blood Covered, Book of Shadows, 2U and Blood Drive), with a few short stories here and there. One could even argue that Dead Patient is a sequel to BD, but since there's not really much connecting them so far, I guess it's fine to say it's a spinoff.

No, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's amazing or anything. But it's still good.

That thing looks very phallic. I've noticed in its design that it looks like a woman spreading her legs. The lack of arms seem to show symbolism of helplessness, which fits rather well, and the one eye and dribbling seminal releas- I mean "ooze" also fits the phallic design. Yume Nikki was always a little uncomfortable sexual, so I think it's kind of cool to see the themes of it be taken and developed into more of an art style.

this live action setting could be interesting but if there's one thing i love the most in yume nikki is that we are capable of identyfing with the ambient and characters without any effort. that's because of simplification. simplification of all information from scenery and those potato looking characters.

Actually nevermind. That original sketch looked so close to something you'd see in the sewers that I swore it was from the original game. I checked, and it's not. It even has those weird little hand things you see in this sketch, here.

Bikdut is a fun name but it doesn't flow off the tongue that easily. Something more Yume Nikki-ish like "the dribbling monster" or "Awadatsu", following the trends of calling things monsters or giving them Japanese names based on something. Awadatsu is Japanese for "ooze", though, "Tereru" is for "to hang" or "to drop" which kind of fits his head. Awadatsu-san has a nice ring to it though. Tereru-san isn't bad either, but "dribbling monster" fits his inhuman nature. We could wait until the game releases and see if he has anything to do with Mars-san, and if so, we could name him something related to Mars like Phobos-san.

I don't mean to get so indepth into this but it's kind of fun to talk about. It might be best to see the characters functionality in game first, and even then, I think it's something that everyone has to agree on.

A thing that worries me about the screenshots and what've seen so far is the general tone shift from Yume Nikki. Yume Nikki felt neutral in that the areas it conveyed weren't meant to be spoopy, it was just a wild dream (aside from 2 or so areas)
The way the lightning is employed in the screenshots (excluding Pink Sea) seems to be going for the scare factor and less for the wows or weirding people out. The countdown artwork also has this darker and edgier approach (Mado looks like a fucking yandere, and don't get me started on Poniko…)
The screenshot were Madotsuki shat herself over Monoe, although funny, seems to be aiming for that horror vibe. It might be because of it's transition to 3D though, because to be frank that's why lots fo the things in the game have the appeal they do, the ambiguity. And it also makes the game feel detached. Heck, some fangames have tried for years to be spoopy and all of them failed. Maybe it's just a difference of perspective.

I'm just hoping they got renditions of other iconic places.
