It's like that with a lot of things for some reason, there are a lot of books I own I haven't gotten through simply because I stopped halfway through them to read something else or lost interest, and a lot of them are ones I know I'd like. I'm not sure what anime to watch, because the ones that sound really appealing are ones I usually get halfway through the first episode of and then either get bored or feel obligated to get through, which paradoxically kills my desire to watch the rest.
Are there many anime series which are interesting enough to grip you from the beginning? If so I'd appreciate hearing what they are.
Feeling overwhelmed
I was really excited about anime a year ago but that excitement seems to have ebbed. The last anime I got all the way through was Eva, and that was quite awhile ago. After that I started Serial Experiments Lain but my computer's fan died before I got all the way through it and by the time I got a new one I'd lost the interest the series built in me during the time I watched it. I know I'd love it but I don't know if I'll actually enjoy watching the rest of it now. The story is set in a dystopian alternative present where any kind of substance able to alter the state of mind is legalized and authorized for consumption at home or in designated places called Pomp Bars.
These products, once considered very dangerous, are now freely advertised on TV. The bartender chooses the ones more suited to his customers and serves them with special cocktails.
When the Pompies movement obtained the liberalization of the drugs it seemed a historically meaningful change destined to improve the world - a dream realized in a manner that radically affected humanity's way of life.
But in a world where all feelings are artificial and where everyone is a potential drug addict, nothing has really changed for the better. Only a select few drugs are considered dangerous and put under strict control by hygiene offices, which is given full authority to handle matters related to the severely addicted.
The main character is Kabu, a small-time peddler and heavy addict. Used to any kind of hallucinogenic trip, he is able to feel the happiness through the ecstasy of the drug, while on the same time hypocritically hating who gave birtn to that society which has forced him to the live this way.

Kodomo no Jikan, an awesome manga/anime. The anime has two seasons I think, the manga has 82 chapters since saturday (and it got translated yesterday~) and is all awesome.

I've mentioned it a few times around here and posted some panels, and I just gotta discuss it. This is the best webcomic I have ever read. It's seriously amazing. Plot: tails gets trolled by some trolls, sonic and shadow try to help, ends up leading to mass murders, and then bam! next thing you know there's looney toons characters and mario and shit and you actually start to care about the plot.
Seriously, it will seem like chris-chan bullshit, but it's so damn engrossing. It's so surreal and ultra-violent, and it actually has genuinely funny jokes, and it starts to kinda make fun of itself as it goes on. Give it a chance, it's magical. I started off making fun of it, and now I am legitimately concerned about the plot and what's gonna happen. Mario's back story in chapter 7 is the most amazing thing.
Oh yeah and the writer is really, really serious about all of this. And apparently he's 20.

But by erasing the stupid fat cat from the comics and leaving everything else in-tact, garfield becomes a dark story about a depressed, lonely, and insane man named Jon Arbuckle who talks to himself and interacts with pets that are not there. It's amazing how funny or sad some of the stuff Jon says can be without context. He sounds liek some of our friends over in /neet
