I didn't like Homestuck despite going in to it with no biases and expecting it to be the greatest thing ever.
Came out feeling like it was hipster trash with strategically-scattered uncommon words included for the sole purpose of allowing the obligatory abrasive part of the fanbase to think that everybody who doesn't like it just "doesn't get it".

So,
Literary analysis time:
Why?
What is the complexity of the story, and what makes it stand out from others? Any archetypal criticism? Is this a monomyth?
What about the characters are likable? Are they good characters, or just plain, likable?
What is it about
the homestucks that … makes it these things?
I'm seriously,
genuinely curious.
No.120
>>109I really did like the mythos surrounding the whole game of Sburb/Sgrub. Everything about that game is interesting to me. The medium and worlds they travel through that test the player's abilities, the sprites, alchemizing things, the whole concept of the Genesis frog, the inhabitants of the worlds such as the consorts and the denizens giving it a fantasy feel (which I'm generally into), and the whole concept of the chess battles and Skia vs Derse as a whole. There's really nothing about Homestuck that doesn't intrigue me or at least make me want to pour a few hours every now and then into researching and expanding my knowledge.
The characters are pretty good too I'm not sure how to describe it but there is an attachment I've felt to these characters. None of them really stand out well but they play the role they're given and I find it very enjoyable to watch the different characters interact with each other trolls included. Most of all though is that you get to watch them grow as you progress throughout the story you get to know them and understand them see them improve. Vriska is just one character who I've seen grow drastically since her debut. She's gone from a murderous alien everybody hates to someone we can understand and sympathize with under those conditions.
No.121
>>120 (continuing because my post was too long)
The animations get me excited the music is superb. It's a giant collaboration of combined efforts not just of one man but a team a living project always changing and adapting to expand on new things and change when needed. A lot of new things have been introduced since its debut a big one being the walk-arounds making it feel less like a story and more like an adventure at times. I found it fun walking around Land of Wind and Shade chatting with salamanders and finding ridiculous objects in mailboxes. It was exciting to romp around the medium as Karkat, Terezi, Kanaya, and other trolls seeing all the fun things in chests and getting to know more about the other trolls then a normal story would touch on.
For me there's just a lot to love in Homestuck. It's everything I could want from something and more
No.124
>>109The animations were interesting to me. I read tons of webcomics and the new format was exciting so that's what got me interested in the first place. I was hooked by the first WV arc.
Going farther into the story there were bits and pieces that I liked. And the lore behind it all too. Like the kids being unable to escape from the game because it was a core part of their existence all along. The very first failed troll session caused them to gamble their whole planet and the planet/their race's history was re-written into something horrible. There's some fun concepts.
Beyond that I feel like the story has gone in an even weirder direction than before. (Frogs? What?) At least the plot twists were unexpected but eh… it started off at a 9/10 score from me to a 4/10. It's so complicated I have to read guides and go on forums to keep up sometimes. I still read just because I'm wondering how this batshit crazy train of a story is going to end but a lot of the fun in gone.
I guess that's why I love the Exile sections of the story so much. Cute, simple characters, no mile long pesterlogs, plus the promise of a crazy fight with Jack Noir.
But all-in-all I enjoyed Problem Sleuth a lot more.

Homestuck doesn't get good.
It's just generally bad, it ends up reusing so many jokes, the 4 main characters are huge mary sues, and the plot is stupidly convoluted. Andrew can't write for shit so the only shock value he uses is having literally every character dying.
Yeah you see that character? They're going to die, no matter what.
I hate the trolls and I don't find any interest in the characters except for Dave, but there's just too much shit I don't care about between him, It feels tedious. The fanbase is what I hate the most, though. More than half of them started at Act 4 or 5, and act like they know everything about homestuck.
Saying that they're "true fans" who constantly talk shit about the first 3 acts of it. They're also dipshits whose only response when someones talking about disliking homestuck are "You're too retarded to understand" or they just call you a hetalia fan.
Who the fuck even still likes hetalia these days?

Homestuck is… errrgh. As previously mentioned, the story is needlessly convoluted, and the same goddamn memes get used over and over again. The characters are rather boring, as well. That said, I've been reading it all the way up until now for some reason, and I've made it this far, so I may as well finish for the sake of some empty feeling of accomplishment.
Oh, and I try to avoid the fanbase on basic principle. I can't even say words like 'stairs' around some Homestuck fans because they'll start spouting that retarded SB&HJ bullshit. :S

>>150>>155The characters are boring? How so? My favourite part about Homestuck was the fact that the characters were all so different and unique and exciting. They were all quirky enough to be cartoon characters, but in the more serious moments of the webcomic they seem a lot more human and developed.
And I don't really get why people are just now complaining of Hussie's use of running gags. He used them in Problem Sleuth, yet everyone constantly says that PS in infinitely better than Homestuck.
As for the fandom, I will agree that there are a large amount of stupid fans, but usually they tend to overshadow the sensible, sane ones. Idiots tend to stick out more, and it shows in a lot of other fandoms too (e.g. Sonic, Hetalia, etc.)

I don't read Homestuck, mostly because It doesn't interest me, and I'm far too ignorant to be convinced.
But this fandom feels like they need to reference anything from Homestuck, and to be everywhere, I feel like they push the webcomic on to everyone they meet, I figure its a good webcomic, obviously from all the hype its created, but a majority of this fandom is pretty rude and sarcastic, from what I've seen, and I have seen a lot, and I mean Majority, not the whole fandom, of course, there are always the good fans here and there.
But copious amounts fantrolls, people revolving their lives around it, saying phrases like "gog and glub" and dressing up as a troll in public for no apparent reason.
I never go looking for it, but it always seems to come find me, everywhere I go, browse, look.
Wouldn't you expect that to become a tad irritating? Surely I do.
I read stories about this fandom, ones that make me uncomfortable, like ones where a group of cosplayers kept throwing buckets at another cosplayer cause that's what happened it the story, sure it seems funny, but think of the person in that position, a metal bucket smacking them right in the face, getting laughed at cause its just one big in-joke, surely that grinds some gears doesn't it? He didn't take it too lightly himself.
I have friends who create fan art for attention, I have friends who participate in the fandom, but exclaim how horrible the fandom is, and that they only participate around their few friends, which I find just fine.
What I'm trying to say is, I just wish I don't have to see this everyday, but there's no helping about that, is there?
Its going to stay around for a while, that's for sure.
But hopefully till then, the fandom will calm down, at least, I sure hope so.

I liked Homestuck's beginning most really, actually pretty much Act 1 up to Act 3. After [S] Enter the comic became a little more predictable and sort of slow, Act 5 was really slow and it felt like Hussie was just rushing through the arc to get it over with. It didn't feel like it had a lot of depth to me so I kind of skipped most of Act 5. And Act 5.2. I must say I really HATE Act 5+, except for [S] Cascade of course. Most of the characters (especially the trolls) died before I could get attached to them. Plot twists come out of nowhere, and are mostly boring and/or predictable. (Especially Rose's grimdark episode, what the hell was up with that anyway?) Karkat is way too much of a whiny, raging brat, and Vriska… just… fuck Vriska. The less said about her the better, for me anyways.
Act 6+ is a lot better, though, I personally enjoy the misadventures of the Alpha kids, mainly Jane and I am really looking forward to R???'s introduction.
Though if there's ONE thing I hate the most about Homestuck, is the pesterlogs. I don't want to read through a GIANT wall of text made of horribly ANNOYING and EYE-SCORCHING colors just to get a bit of story. The logs with Scratch were horribly obnoxious. I wish the logs could be smaller, spread over more pages maybe if they have to be terribly long, and use less annoying colors. I love Jane and R??? but I hate the horribly bright colors they use.

Other than Equius, Nepeta, and Gamzee, but that's because I've watched dubs of some Tumblr ask blogs and the voices were really fitting. I have a sort of voice for Tavros and Dave, but, it isn't really a specific voice, more like a specific category of voices. When I try to imagine John's voice, I've got this voice that is way too deep for a 13-year-old. And then, I try to imagine a less deep voice, and I get this squealing shit. So, I really don't know.

I was wondering, what is everyones headcanons(I feel weird using this term, since I've never actually used it before. I know what it means, I'm just kind of getting used to using terms like headcanon/canon/fanon/ships/OTPs/ect, I'm only kind of recently getting into parts of fandoms that actually use terms like that) on, like, troll and kid heights?
This is my list of tallest to shortest:
Gamzee
Equius
Meenah
Feferi
Aranea
Dirk
Kanaya
Roxy
Dave
Nepeta
Jane
Jake
Eridan
Terezi
Jade
Sollux
John
Aradia
The Handmaid Child ver.
Rose
Vriska
Tavros
Karkat
Most of the characters I imagine are only shorter or taller by a few inches, but, Gamzee I kind of imagine being 7 or 8 feet tall, Equius I imagine being only slightly shorter than that, and Karkat I kind of imagine being, like, 4 feet or something. Other than that though, most of the characters I imagine are fairly average heights(Somewhere between 5 and 6 feet)

Comics tend to be visual works and therefore give people a pretty general indication of whether or not someone is tall or short and fat or slim.

>>573One of my personal headcannonscanonsWHATEVER is that kanaya is a full time drag queen(like the characters in to wong foo, thanks for everything) rather than an actual female troll, but thats not like a serious one where im like THE CLUES ARE THERE its just one i like to use because i am a homo and like homos.
a more serious one i guess is i really like to think of the trolls as having bug/insect/fish/amphibious characteristics.
Lowblood trolls are more insect-ish. The higher blooded trolls start out as semi-amphibious insects and go into amphibian territory, like frogs, the higher they go. Seadwellers are of course sea-things/water things. I admittedly made Feferi an axolotl just because I like axolotls..
For example of the land dwelling higbloods though, Gamzee is one of the highest on land, right? I would see him as having frog characteristics, like the horizontal pupil, timpanic membrane, etc, Equius would be probably more like a salamander, Vriska would be a water spider(creative i kno), and I see Nepeta as something like a Damefly, I'm pretty sure they start out life underwater and then they live the rest of their life on land. I'm not quite sure what kind of thing i see terezi as, I may switch her to a damefly and nepeta to something else, seeing as dameflies are related to dragon flies and terezi has an affinity for dragons..
its something i need to work on oops.
im glad that homestuck is intended more as a template for interpretation, though honestly I would probably do this kind of thing regardless of how much was laid out for me.
No.588
>>581Twitter or something stupid like that. The image always pops up on 4chan
No.589
>>588Even though you can see the characters weights and heights in hero mode, if you notice, they are all pretty much almost the exact same height and weight, and so it might just be that he made them those heights and weights because it's not exactly possible to draw a physical body without it having a weight or height, and it would have been hard for him to make a comic where all of the characters are invisible, so he probably just picked a generic height and weight for all the characters to have.
I mean, he said that it was sort of intentional for people to fill the gaps like that. On top of that, while Homestuck is a comic in some ways, comics don't normally have animations and flash games, so it's sort of a cartoon/comic/video game hybrid in some ways.
No.590
>>587I dunno how much I like the Kanaya theory, since I sort of just like to view her as a lesbian(Even though I guess she's almost 100% definitely pansexual), but the whole theory about them having insect and fish and lizard and amphibian parts is kind of cool. Certain trolls I still prefer viewing as having more human-ish features(To me, there aren't really animals that would make Tavros, Kanaya, and Karkat look very nice, atleast compared to more human-ish type versions), but most of them, having animal-ish parts sounds cool. I don't know exactly how frog-ish you mean when you talk about Gamzee having frog-ish parts, but atleast the eyes thing would be cool.
No.591
>>589The "comic" part simply sets up the fact that it's viewed with the eyes and not interpreted with the mind. On top of that, it's a webcomic, keyword "comic"
And hussie kind of pulls a lot of stuff out his ass on the fly, especially stuff about things being up for interpretation. A missing chunk of the story that quite frankly isn't needed, that's one thing. The kids' nationalities, that's another. He could have simply said "Oh, I just didn't think of that when I made it" when people asked about it. I mean I personally would have just taken that as an answer, some people might have thought it was a cheap cop-out answer but it would have been a valid one none the less. He instead decided he was going to drag it on about how it was some legendary message about how *racism is dumb. That backfired in the end when he found out that people actually read the first four acts and started picking out subtle and blaring hints towards race. I'm all for the diversity message and etc I've spent too much time writing this.
I'm pretty sure he's said a lot of times when asked if a character is fat that they should just read the comic though. Either that or he's made a sarcastic/snarky remark about it.
No.592
>>591im not sure why you seem to be kinda bent out of shape over the fact that hussie is doing things kind of differently.
he sort of made it like a game from the start, and said he wanted the characters to be generic and template-y lik what you find in a lot of games. makes sense, whatever. Even when things are laid out clearly lot sof people like to make their own headcanons.
No.593
>>592I'm not bent out of shape because hussie is doing things differently
I'm bent out of shape because people think some of the characters are fat when they're literally right in front of them on the screen
I mean I get that some people joke about it but others genuinely think Vriska is a whale when this pic is a pretty good indication that she's not fat at all really
No.594
>>593So, you are basically saying that because Hussie didn't draw them without bodies, we 100% have to interpret them exactly as they are shown?
Oh, also, Vriska has huge fucking eyes, and it's not just the art style.
Also, sometimes, certain characters have different arm lengths, and most of the time, no arms at all, so we should also interpret as that the characters can control their arm length at will.
Everything must be interpreted exactly as shown.
Even though Hussie, the creator of the comic said we didn't have to.
We have to.
No.595
>>590yeah thats just my personal little joke theory i dont really expect anyone to like or get lol.
err here is a really sloppy doodle to try and explain what i mean by frog characteristics?
Tympanic(wow i suck at spellan) membrane are these circular spots right behind a frog's eyes that function as ears, I see gamzee as having an especially wide mouth, and I also sort of see him as making the honk noise within his throat, and that his throat expands when this happens, similar to a frog croaking. When he is sober/CRAZYASFUKK he usually types/speaks alternating in lowercase and uppercase, and I like to think as well that when he is speaking with uppercase text his throat is semi-expanded and his voice is a lot deeper and gravely.
frog eyes are a given as well, I liked them also due to their similarity to goats eyes.
the fact that Gamzee lives near water also kind of contributed to my headcanon of the sort of AMPHIBIA SPECTRUM thing i guess.
herdedurr no one really cares shush your butt now naz.
No.596
>>594No. What I'm saying is that people that have fat headcanons are complete magnitudes off the chart. People that think they're chubby are different.
I'm not saying they're figures of health and fitness, I'm saying they're not whales like some people seem to believe.
No.597
>>593you shouldnt be bent out of shape when the *creator* said that is what he intended for people to do with these characters. it is his comic, not yours, if people want to interpret vriska as being fat, or kanaya as being thin, jade as black, rose as mexican, whatever its not really for you to police.
No.598
>>597Um
I never said anything about the race? I said something about being disappointed in Hussie for his terrible execution of that argument but I never said anything about the race.
By the way, this is what I mean when I say fat (minus the body hair). I can get people thinking she's overweight, which is in fact much different than being fat. I don't get people that think this thuogh.
No.599
>>596So basically, it's okay for fans to imagine Vriska as chubby, but not as obese?
No.600
>>598i know, i get that, but still if that is what the creator wants people to do, then people can see her as fat as they want to, thoughit would make more sense for someone like gamzee to be obese.
but anyway, seriously you are going to need to get over it, when they are in their sort of chibimode, you could easily interpret vriska as being that size, the less chibi versions of the characters, not so much, it seriously does not matter though. peoples headcanons really shouldnt bother you so much..
No.601
>>598The fact that you didn't mention race is kind of un-important, you were still basically saying that people shouldn't have headcannons about the characters specific details in their looks, even if you only really mentioned weights and heights.
