2kki Help Thread 2: Electric Boogaloo Eurochewky 09/28/11 (Wed) 00:59:05 No. 25 [Last 50 Posts]
So I tried both reposting and shortening the old help thread, but the new Uboachan keeps eating it because it's too long. For now, I'll post a link to the full instructions that were thankfully saved on the wiki before the move:
http://yume2kki.wikia.com/wiki/Installation_Instructions This thread can be a general installation help thread for questions that the wiki page might not have answered.

Oh, and for people who have XP and can't find their CD, you can download an XP .iso and an .iso image burner (google these, it's not that hard to find one) and then burn the .iso to a disk with the other program. An .ISO file works as a sort of "ghost" copy of the installation disk, and it can be pretty helpful if you don't know where your disk is or if your computer didn't come with one (a lot of stores have it pre-installed).

>>29 Try re-installing the RTP for RPG maker and make sure it's the Japanese one, other than that I've got nothing. Vista can usually run 2kki without the pApplocale if you have your computer locale set to Japanese, which should still be in the Regional and Language options. But hey, maybe that's just me.

I did everything you told me and ran it using applocale (and later no applocale, and some other attemps) but it goes into fullscreen-black mode, then it turns small again and there's the error of my picture, I didn't even get to see anything from the game as of yet
if it has to do with the RPG maker not being japanease, I've searched everywhere and could only find the one that's recommended in the yume 2kki wiki

Update on
>>32 I've found that all of my "missing file" errors have resulted from these files being named incorrectly. Files that were supposed to be titled with japanese text read things like "ò¦æa" instead. I believe this has something to do with unicode conversion, though I don't exactly know how to convert the ò¦æa-text back into japanese.
If anybody has any info on this, let me know.

>>31 Since I couldn't find a solution, I uninstalled everything and redid all I could
I put my locale as japanease font, turned off user security or whatever (the thing that promps administration yes or no) I re-installed applocale + got that other thing that allows you to use the japanease locale with just a simple right click.
I first tried getting the japanease RPG maker 2003, but whenever I tried to run it using applocale or no applocale, it always gave me an error (it just said ERROR RUNNING, nothing more)
and then I went for the english RPG maker 2000 (the one that's on the yume 2kki wiki) and it did everything fine when I used the japanease locale.
Now, I'm still stuck at the same problem, the thing will run, become fullscreen mode, all black, end fullscreen mode and show me this error.
I'm really loosing my hopes here <- and I'm starting to think I'm better off waiting for the game to be finished oficially and someone make it into a single dowload+exe like they did with yume nikki.
If anyone can help me further I'd apreciate it, maybe I just suck with files? >_<
Anyway, the picture is my error, I think its the same as the other picture but it might not be

Now, the wiki says, "When the scrolling sea background slows down and the radar noise changes, you can get out of the submarine, and it will take you to the Ocean Floor." There's absolutely nothing you can do to apply files from an old translated version to make it compatible with 096a, bar cracking it open and translating it yourself (which would be fruitless, since there are already a group of folks working on one) To use effects, get the effects and you can select the one you want from the first menu option (which read's Efekuto in katakana; and many of the effects' names are also written in katakana). You can't use them if you're awake, however.

About the part with the light, or whatever it is - at the beginning I was trying to do as you said, but it didn't work, so yeah. Maybe it's just me, sorry.
Btw I started learning English only a few years ago, so my grammar may be really bad. Yeah, foreigner.
Anyway, I didn't meant to write any PRO guide or anything, all I wanted was helping others, because I've read a few help request.
And of course! Wiki was optional, I don't think it's necessary, so I rather won't do that myself.
Well, I think that's all.

I got it working on Windows 8 today. I went through hell, but found out it was pretty easy in the end. The main problem is that AppLocale doesn't work properly in Win8, so you have to right-click it, and set it's compatibility mode to Windows XP. Then it works as intended. Also for some reason, when I tried running 2kki I kept getting a DDraw error, but in the end I had to run a "start.exe" file that was around. Then the game started in windowed and worked perfectly. So yeah, it runs fine in Windows 8.
Aomizuchi 03/07/13 (Thu) 14:13:00 No. 1729
>>1728 I actually made the first step-by-step tutorial on installing 2kki. Then the other guy adapted it for the wiki. Might as well help with Win8 now, since I'm using it and I got it to work.
Installing AppLocale:
1. Install AppLocale.
2. Open the start menu. Type "AppLocale"
3. When it appears DO NOT RUN IT. Right-click it, then choose "open file location" at the bottom.
4. Now, right-click the AppLocale shortcut that appears, and choose properties.
5. Go to the compatibility tab and choose Win XP SP3.
– I have no idea if the following part is necessary, but I did it anyway. –
Installing the Japanese language support:
1. Now go to the Control Panel (you can do this by right-clicking the place where the start menu orb used to be, on the bottom-left corner of the screen).
2. Under "Clock, Language and Region" there's an option to add a language. Click it.
3. On the screen that shows up, click the "Add a language" button.
4. Pick Japanese.
5. It'll appear on the list BUT IT'S STILL NOT INSTALLED. Click "options" next to it, then "install this language" or something like that.
6. Be careful not to choose to use it as the main language. If you do this, your Windows will be all in japanese.
– I actually tried having my Windows in japanese, so I could install everything without using applocale but it DID NOT WORK! You really have to use AppLocale. –
Install the context menu extension:
1. Download the file
http://www.hongfire.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=86298&d=1208143928 2. Unzip it.
3. Double-click "install.reg".
4. Click "yes".
This will allow you to run any file in japanese-mode, by right-clicking the file and choosing "Japanese Locale". You -MUST- install both the japanese RTP2000 and 2kki by doing this, or else your PC will mess up the filenames and nothing will work properly.
– I didn't use pAppLocale in this tutorial, but it worked just fine with the regular AppLocale. There were no annoying pop-ups or anything like that. –
Now, just follow the regular instructions to install the japanese RTP2000, and then you can download and run 2kki.
It's also important to note that when unzipping 2kki, you must RUN WINRAR USING THE JAPANESE LOCALE. In Win8, just go to the start menu, type "winrar", open it's file directory, right click it and choose "japanese locale". Then, just browse to where your 2kki zip file is and unzip it.
The newest version of 2kki has a "start.exe" file, you have to open it with AppLocale

As for whether or not it's a good idea, it kind of depends on what changes were made between versions. In most cases, I figure it's unlikely to break anything, especially in a game like Yume 2kki, though it's hard to know for certain without knowing what changed between those versions.

Turns Out I was using RPG Maker 2003 RTP, not 2K RTP. Check that the RTP is installed to begin with AND that its the japanse untranslated version.

For some god-awful reason Yume-2kki's start.exe decided to become a .tmp file after having and playing it for a year making running it from anywhere but the default rpg maker .exe impossible. getting a new one from a new .Rar file very quickly changes it into a new .tmp file. renaming it to start.exe doesn't work and changes it to a .tmp file again.

>>2156 I had to read your post a few times to understand it.
I'd suggest you to get rid of everything you have in your 2kki folder, expect the save files, download it again and move those files into the new folder. Before that, I recommend you to check what things have changed from your version to the new one, since if an effect location changes, your game may crash and those saves won't work.

I couldn't get the RTP to install, but I have found, what appears to be, a good alternitive to the RTP Installer.
I'm using Windows7 Ultimate x64.
I've tried to whole shebang, running as admin, WindowsXP compatibility, the AppLocale app, etc.
However, I simply could NOT get it to work.
This is what would happen;
I'd start up RPG2000RTP.exe
After it extracted all the setup files, it would give a 0x80040707 error.
Pressing OK, it would finish initializing the installer, then give the same error.
After both of those errors, the installer would finally pop up, blue screen and all.
Clicking next would bring me to the "Install Directory" window. Here, if I clicked okay, this error would appear: 不明のエラーが発生しました。
Which, apparently roughly translates into "Unknown Error", and the installer would crash.
After abit of googling, apparently that is some kind of bug with the installer itself, or with InstallShield.
Keep in mind, I could see Japanese lettering fine. If you are still seeing weird symbols or squares, you probably just need to install Japanese or use AppLocale.
Here is my workaround. This 'should' work as a backup plan for anyone if the installer simply doesn't work. It's a bit of a pain to do, but it works. What you're doing is pretty much installing the RTP manually.
Make a new folder anywhere. Just in case, try to make sure the folder path has no spaces (IE "C:\Users\You\Desktop\FolderName"). It might work with spaces, but just in case, leave them out.
Next download the RTP if you haven't, and also download UniExtractor, which can be found here:
http://legroom.net/scripts/download.php?file=uniextract161_noinst If the link dies and you need to find it yourself, get the portable version, not the installer. It doesn't 'really' matter, but for ease of use, the portable version is nice.
If the RTP is packaged in something (.rar, .zip, a .exe package), extract it so the RTP is "RPG2000RTP.exe" by itself. Then extract all of UniExtractors files somewhere as well.
Then move all of the files into the new folder you made. The contents of the folder should now be: UniExtract.exe, RPG2000RTP.exe, Bin(Folder), and some misc stuff from UniExtract.
Now, drag and drop RPG2000RTP.exe onto UniExtract and hit Ok, give it a second and hit "Isxunpack Extraction"(Default option) and hit Ok again.
Give it a second and it should've now made some new files (Located in the folder you made).
Next, drag and drop data1.cab into UniExtract.exe and hit Ok again. This time, it should take quite abit longer. There will be a error at the end, but I don't think anything is broken by it. So hit Cancel at the error.
Now, everything that is located in the new "Data1" folder is the entire RTP. Inside the folder should be the final "RTP" folder.
If there is no "RTP" folder, make sure you extracted the .cab, not the .hdr.
You may rename this folder if you wish (Data1, not RTP).
Take the folder and put it somewhere out of the way. Such as in C:\Program Files\. Or just C:\.
In my example, I put it in Program Files. So the directory tree looks like this: "C:\Program Files\(Renamed)RPG2K\RTP\*"
Almost there, the annoying part is done.
Start up RegEdit. You can do this by hitting Windowskey+R, typing in RegEdit.exe and hitting enter.
wiggle your way to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ASCII\RPG2000
If it's not there, right click>New Key and create the 'folders' until you get to the RPG2000 folder.
Now, with RPG2000 selected, on the right window, right click > new > String Value.
Name the new object "RuntimePackagePath", hit enter and double click on it. Keep note that the String name and 'key structure' 'is' important. So mind those typos.
Enter the path to the RTP folder into it, within quotes and (For some reason) double backslashes.
For example, mine was: "C:\\Program Files\\RPG2K\\RTP\\"
And finally, you are finished.
What you're doing here is essentially installing the RTP yourself, so it's quite a bit out of the way.
However, if you were getting the same errors I was, of if some other thing is happening, this might be the only way around it.
But yeah, figured I'd share. I hope this helps someone in the future.

So I tried the Japanese Locale way but even then my laptop is being stupid about it (Windows 8) because whenever I right click the RPG exe file and select Japanese Locale, it asks me which app I would like to open it with
Whenever I try to run it normally without selecting the J/L it will have the random characters and question marks and fails halfway saying the file name, directory name, or volume label name is incorrect.

Do you have any other games with japanese text?. Try running those with applocale (in cas eyou don't have any, download the last touhou). If the text is mojibake, then the problem is the applocale shit, I'm suspecting microsoft didn't update it to W10 or they fucked up somehow.

Now, the weird thing here is that even with running with your computer's locale in japanese, you still have problems rendering asian text. If there wasn't any problem with the download and extraction of files, I'd think it's either a problem with the language packs or the accessibility/compatibility of windogs 10 with RPGmaker in general; and neither of those makes sense, since microsoft ensures to have a running system in every language and it doesn't seem logical to release a product that can't even render text. And, as for the later, I'm afraid there's not much to be done if that's the case, but honestly I'd consider that as really weird since I've seen nips using windows 10 and playing games without problems.

Also all of the issues I was having with spelude were fixed by downloading .103i and replacing all of the files. I originally used the patch and it was ineffective. I'd suggest that anyone who has issues just goes ahead and downloads .103i.

And I have never had issues with RPGMaker games before so I apologize if this is a really stupid question.
Anonymous 01/01/16 (Fri) 21:38:35 No. 2992
>>2991 The game will always request for a png file so it's useless to change it to bmp, and RM2k3 doesn't support jpg. Also, jpg's compression artifact is shit so nobody in their right mind would use it in these kind of games; whoever told you to change the format to jpg is a dick.
Try again with this one, and (just in case) remember to change the name to システム.png

Running Yume 2kki 0.104b on Win10 with Locale Emulator. The game runs fine, but sadly shows mojibake in all the menus.
The problem is actually solved chaning the locale of the system to Japanese, but it is a bit of a pain the ass since we have programs like Locale Emulator that should help run the game fine withut changing the system locale.
It's a shame Win10 doesn't support AppLocale anymore.

>>3051 You need the japanese RTP, not the english one. There is no other way out.
Also, the game needs to be run on japanese too, otherwise the computer will not know what the fuck is RM2k asking for.
