Is there a way to change the color of the page in Microsoft OneNote 2010 to something dark? I found the interface's option for page color, but it only lets you pick from a palette of really lightly-tinted colors, which really aren't much better than white. I was wondering if there was an easy way for me to modify the program's files to change the available color palette. If not, is there a similar note-taking program that has an actually useful page color option?

I use OneNote for my dream journal because I like the tab/section feature, and I spend a lot of time writing in MS Word. But after such a long time using dark-themed websites like Uboachan and the 'Tomorrow' color scheme on 4chan, it's become annoying to look at the blinding whiteness that's custom everywhere else. I've realized it's just way easier on my eyes to read light-colored text on a dark background, but very few word processing programs seem to have a feature to facilitate that.

Try changing windows' default color and test if it also changes the OneNote's color.

>but very few word processing programs seem to have a feature to facilitate that.

Almost every word processing program I've ever used had this feature. However, they're normal word processing programs rather than one-shot style software. I suppose you use it for the "reminder" purpose (it shows up a message once you boot your OS), right? Because if you're needing something which saves text files (a normal word processing soft), then even word can be changed in with windows default colors.

Pic related, Word and PDF in my win partition. I changed the whole layout colour palette to be some kind of dark-blue, but I haven't tested if the light blue from Word can be changed. I suppose you can, google how to.

Changing the Windows default colors would allow me to display the files in a darker color, but it wouldn't change the actual file itself… So if I opened the file on a different computer that didn't have my color settings, I'd be looking at a white background again, right?

Oh well, I suppose that's not a huge problem. Thanks a lot for the solution—this'll be a huge help.

Yes. It will only change how it is displayed in your computer.

 No.416[Reply]

So a few days ago, my parents learned that Microsoft will no longer be supporting Windows XP in terms of updates for protection and all that jazz sometime in April.

My dad asked me what they would have to do. Based on what I've read, they (or me or someone else) would have to either update their OS or get a new computer if the computer is unable to support any recent OS.

Now the thing about our one and only computer is that it is from 2005. It has an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core CPU, NVIDIA GeForce 6150 graphics card, 1024 MB of RAM, and a 200 GB hardrive.

Is it possible to update to Windows 7 on the computer?

The only concern, other than "What about our files/photos?!", is if it is possible for my family to buy a cheap desktop or the OS for Windows 7 (Other than, you know…). Yes, I know $200 isn't much for most but for my family, that isn't the case. I'll spare the rant and just leave it at that.

Anyhow, I would appreciate any answers.

So pick the parts and (if things are ok) a local PC store will build it for you. This would be cheaper than buying a prebuilt one at any store. Is that what I understood? If so, sounds good.

I'm still concerned about how my parents think of all this; what with being in the lower-middle class (I heard my dad maybe mentioning us being below the poverty line).

 No.423

>>422
yes, you got it.

If spending $200-$260 on a whole pc is too much, look into replacing the CPU and GPU only. You should be looking at 2-3gb of ram, 3 being optimal for win7, but again, whatever you can afford.

 No.424

I've got win 7 on this shitty laptop.
CPU: Intel Atom X86 N455 1.66 HGz
RAM: 1Gb.
Graphic Card: Intel Graphic Media Accelerator 3150.
160 GB HDD.
Dualboot with Loonix sabayon.

As you can see, your computer seems to be more or less in this situation too, except for the processor. AMD is shit.
Winwound 7 works fine here, although it has its moments when the lags comes. But overall, it works, and I think your family is not going to run heavily memory dependent programs so it should be ok.
I'm not too exigent with my vidya. I can run all Touhous except the last one, but that's because ZUN updated the C++ library. Unity games run like crap, but I'm not a big fan of 3D.
I don't have anything to complain. I use this partition for games after all, and loonix for my other shit.
If you're going to build a new computer I recommend you to try installing W7 there. If it does not work then go for it and build it.
It's actually not that hard but if you want to send it to a technician, it's up to you.

I have always turned off my PC at the end of the day, even switched the PSU off.
What are the benefits if any to leave a PC running in hybernation?
I switch it on the first thing every day anyway.

Maybe it's just me but I've noticed lightbulbs have a longer life if you just leave them on instead of switching them on and off every day.

Sure it might save electricity but how much really? If say a PC is running in hybernation five nights a week alongside a smaller lightbulb.
It's not gonna make that much of a difference in my mind.

But about the PC components, is there some consensus about their longevity and performance regarding sleep/hybernation and switching on/off?

 No.387

I've never heard of a computer getting too old to function, laptops excluded. If you don't drop it the only part that could stop working are hard disks, cd and floppy drives and fans. All the rest is solid state, after all, and if you don't let your computer overheat they won't change. Humidity could damage your motherboard, but it has nothing to do with switching on and off.

Fans aren't supposed to get damaged, I've never heard of CD or floppy drives failing, and a hard drive is one of the best ways to store data because it rarely fails and will keep the files theoretically eternelly. SSDs get damaged and should never be used imo. Rewrites wreck SSDs and there is nothing anyone can do about it.

I believe switching on and off is more straining to HDs because they require more reads than sleeping.

Are you gonna keep your computer till the day you die or something? This kind of stuff doesn't really matter because computers get outdated before they really 'die'. Excluding laptops, because they get into accidents.

 No.389

you describe the results of an optimal scenario: low use, low humidity, a constant mild temperature, no power surges or outages, etc. fans, hard drives, and disk drives all have moving parts which can fail. capacitors on a board can fail, as well as batteries. dust build-up is also a thing and I have had spiders camp inside pcs before. degradation over time is inevitable for everything but proper care and maintenance always helps

I have a 14 year old laptop in my closet and a tower in the living room that's like 16… both still work somehow and I know the tower was rarely maintained and not shut down properly until it was given to me… and I commuted with the laptop for a few years

it blows my mind when people tell me their computers only last them like two years. what the fuck do they do to these machines?

I leave my computer on most of the time because it doesn't hibernate properly thanks to a trash motherboard. and the noise of the fans helps me sleep better

in the past I thought about setting up remote access to it since it is on all the time, but I'm always at home these days so there's no point

What the fuck can I do? Some two months ago I took my grandfather's laptop to fix it. It's really ancient and has serious trouble running XP, so I thought I could install Gentoo. That didn't work because the graphics card is so old it's driver's source isn't compatible with current xorg It could be patched if I studied xorg or C.

So then I tried with Arch so compilation wouldn't be a problem, but grub-mkconfig crashes and now I can boot neither the installation or even the live CD (wtf is wrong with it, suddenly?). Is there anything I can do except for learning C and rewriting the goddamned Xorg along with its drivers?

I would never let him do anything with any system, anyway. Arch or Gentoo will be fine if only I get to have root privileges. All he needs to and can do is open browser and text editor and use them.

Never seen my Mint dvd act like this… Before it froze to this it gave some sort of missing firmware error right after loading the splash png. Pressing power button didn't change anything but the fan noise. I think I'll just use gentoo cd to get his files safe and call it quits.

…but only momentarily. It's on now. I WILL make a working computer out of it ONE WAY OR ANOTHER

Give crunchbang a whirl. Debian based, so you have plenty of support/packages and it's intended for squeezing efficiency out of older computers or laptops. It also has a build for non-modern PCs.

Only thing is the DE is very shortcut heavy, so you'll probably have to play with openbox to make it more familiar for an older person.
