I'm surprised how little has been talked about the influence of various 20th century artists/art movements on Yume Nikki, compared to all the theories/explanations for the aztec imagery. Pictured is a sculpture by the dada artist Jean Arp.

The paintings by Joan Miro are another obvious reference point.

Huh. I guess the aztec stuff is just more well known, I haven't heard of these artist before. Thanks for sharing those Miro paintings, if you know any other clear influences please share.

Well I guess surrealism in general is a reference point. Joan Miro was a part of the movement and Jean Arp as well (also worth nothing that surrealism more or less grew out of dada).

from the YN wiki
"Tokuto-kun might be a reference to Salvador Dalì's painting "Apparatus And Hand" (1927). Both Tokuto-kun and the painting share similarities in both geometric shape, and the viscous liquid being spouted from within said geometrical figure. A similar structure can be found on one of the paths in the White Desert."

Another one from the wiki.
"Various cats drawn by Louis Wain. FACE bears a resemblance to the more distorted ones."

Andre Masson is another possible influence.
This one is "Birth of Birds" from 1925.
Also worth noting is how hidden/subconscious phallic and yonic imagery played a big role in the surrealists' art.
