>>23I meant the 8 original doujin sound novels, and by the worst one I meant Matsuribayashi-hen, written by Ryukishi07 as the ending of the canon story, AKA "the real ending", or so it said in the omake IIRC.
I never played any other of the games/remakes (honestly, they looked pretty shitty), except Rei (I think), and it was fun overall. Ironically, as uncanon as it may have been, it was better than half of the canon arcs.
I heard mangamemer crippled the english version and so I avoided it, no idea what things they did there.
From what I remember, Onigakushi-hen was pretty great, I loved the suspense and the whole "No matter what you do we know what you're doing" tension. Watanagashi-hen was pretty good too, it reached a climax when things went to shit again and again until the end, it really made you wonder about what was happening. How to put it, it made it feel like there was much more behind the thing that what was being displayed already. Boy, a very big mistery for you to think about as deeply as you wanted! That's exactly the catchy thing about the game, it doesn't show any hint to solve anything, and thus you start to make your own theories. The third arc was pretty soft and I don't remember what happened in the fourth arc but I don't feel bad about it so it was probably passable.
First arc of Kai was good, it gave a new perspecive and answered some questions. I enjoyed Rena's arc too, served to show that behind the most gentle smile something really dark may linger. The 7th arc wasn't bad at all but I was kind of feeling that something shitty would pop up at the end already, and damn, Ryukishi delivered. I hated the 7th arc so much, it made me feel I wasted my time with the whole thing.
That's basically my experience with Higurashi.
TL;DR the story is pretty solid and the writer knows how to make yourself immerse inside the game's atmosphere and relate to the characters, but he didn't know how to end his thing, so don't expect a great finale. Actually, avoid the finale, and you will feel better about the game.
