I dunno, a bunch of people being slightly wrong about the shapes of landmasses they were never intimately acquainted with in the first place doesn't seem like that big of a deal. Especially when you consider how many different map projections there are and the many different shapes they can take just from one map to the next.
Really the whole Manedla effect does sound like it really is just a lot of people forgetting minor details about unimportant trivia, which isn't much of a stretch. It's a bit ridiculous when people start claiming shit like multiple universes or massive conspiracies just because they couldn't remember if the second-to-last vowel in the name of some fictional family of bears was an A or an E.
