I've never liked the ambiguity of mastermind's rules.

Let's say the secret code is 1133, and I guess 3444.

Would that be ?, because I put one 3 in the wrong place? Or would it be ?? because there are two correct places for it?

The opposite gives the same problem, if the code is 3444 and I guess 1133, is that ?? because there are two out-of-place 3's? Or ? because there's only one place for them?

I was about to dump a list of 0000-9999 until my smart and handsome friend pointed out that the max variable for each place was 4.

Instead, I'm going to dump a list of 0000-4444 because there's no rule against doing that.

However, it can be deduced that I only needed to post parts of the list after the 0XXX category and with two ones and possibly a three placed somewhere in there because of the OP's "hints"
