I would get rid of wilful ignorance. It would improve many aspects of the human experience.
If it's something that has to be material, I'd make the earth's resources, and everyone's money infinite, so everyone could live as they wish.

I would make people live their lifestyle their way. So for hikikomoris, they can do that without anyone saying other wise. For people who just want to escape reality, they can and there are no consequences. You're gay? Alright, no one's judging, live your lifestyle.
This would apply to everybody

have to be ignorant of something. There's too much to know for one person, and if you don't make that choice of knowing, someone else is gonna make it for you. What's so bad about
being human?

I would create perfect humanoid creatures that do not require emotional input like us and with near godlike intellect and also have a enhanced physiology with almost perfect regnerative capbilites.
Obviously they would conclude that all humans are obsolete and must be eradicted.
Tough i guess a terminator style AI should sufice.

>>9513You forgot the "wilful" part. It's unreasonable to expect someone to know everything, but it would be nice if everyone knew a little about everything. At least things that affect them - like how the human body works, how environments and ecosystems work, general knowledge of science, biology, history and psychology. In this day and age, if you live in a first world country, not knowing anything about those is usually a choice. What I meant is, I wish people wouldn't -choose- to remain ignorant, and cling to flawed prejudices and opinions, even when conflicting facts are displayed and explained, and the ability to learn is readily available. It is damaging to them, and people around them.

>>9511This sounds like it'd make an awesome story. Too bad I'm too lazy and inexperienced to write it.
Anyways, to answer Op's question, I don't like the idea of making big changes to the past, since
though there's a lot I hate about this world, I'm still quite attached to it… But I suppose I'd make it so that more money and time was dedicated to science instead of weaponry. Primarily space research. This world could end at any moment; we need a backup plan. Can't keep putting all our eggs in one basket. Not to mention, I mean, imagine living among the rest of the galaxy and all it's aliens. Imagine no longer being confined to just one planet and it's forms of life. We could learn so much from other species, and grow to unimaginable heights.
Though I guess it's up to the last generation to really give a damn about it, since every other generation just uses the motto "I won't live long enough to see it anyways. Why should I care?"
Though who knows, maybe we are the last generation. Any one of us could be. We need to really start thinking outside of Earth sooner or later if we want to survive.
But hey, that's just my opinion. I hope the world doesn't end.

To make my future better? Hmm, it's hard to think of something to change in the world to make my personal future better without drastically changing the future of everyone else
I would prefer to make a change that would benifit mankind as a whole in my opinion
That would be to create a comitee of educators with worldwide authority
We would give free education to every human being but also very strict laws enforcing that everyone is getting an education until they graduate university and get automatically placed into the job
"Entry level" jobs would be machine/robot operated and the education would be a very science based to move the human race in the right direction

Or:
-Nationalize all infrastructure like public transportation, communications and health services like hospitals.
-All patented inventions such as drugs would be available to the government to produce in generic forms.
-Free healthcare for all non-cosmetic procedures and dentistry.
-Create a minimum income for everyone.
-Instead of shopping, the poor can order packages of goods containing food and grooming supplies to their door.
-Free housing to people who can't afford it, or don't want to live with their parents or abusive partners.
-Free education.
-Completely free market for consumers; guns, drugs, anything. Monitoring on producers for quality and safety.
-All non-privately owned or otherwise unzoned land is a legal campground with limits on natural resource harvesting by visitors.
Although free for native born citizens, there would be discounted costs for permanent residents, and full costs to tourists to prevent "healthcare/education vacations".
I basically want to live post-scarcity. It's really sad that all these reforms are basically possible if the robber-barons of the 1% are dethroned and the government worked in the interest of the people.

>>14853Yep, although some improvements said were arguably impractical, the line of thought is perfect. So many things could be achieved with good intentions and organized progress. It's not even hard. We could probably be working 3 hours a day and close to "home". All needed was just… Cooperation and organization. Such a waste.
>>9507Directing this to the thread's topic, the 1 thing to change to achieve this is simply people somehow acquire taste for discussion and thought. Just from this, ideas would flow and things would be done.
The way things are now, we have 5 people changing one light bulb, 2 doing nothing and looking desperately for something to do while 1 guy keeps all the bulbs for himself. Logic.

>>14853To be honest I had essentially the same thing in my mind when I said "work up to our potential as a species"; it's pretty depressing that we really can't seem to, has been to me since I was 12. Fuck's sake, we make not even get off this rock with any sort of permanency before we blow ourselves away.
Only caveat I'd add to that idea is some sort of assurance that freedom of speech and political organization is retained. Still wary about the effects on that of handing so much power to the state, for reasons that should be fairly obvious.
