What does "not having a soul" mean though, really? I don't think it's a meaningful distinction. I think a "soul" has to do with consciousness and I think Mado's dreams are indicative of a deeper consciousness.

I'm really projecting my own feelings to the game though, but I think this may be the intention of the game. I always thought that the eyes had something to do with Madotsuki's anxiety or paranoia or general isolated hermitness. At least, I hate looking at people in the eyes. Eyes reminds me of people watching me and give off paranoia vibes.

I found an article about ancient artifacts that had an eye in the center of the palm. It's nothing new to Yume Nikki. I can't really remember what it represents. It might tie into the Aztec looking monkeys though. (I posted the link ages ago.)

I'm glad you pointed out the possible word play. Even if it wasn't intentional it is cute.
