Two theories related to Masada.
1. Masada is a tribute to Savage Garden, specifically Darren Hayes and the self titled Savage Garden album where Darren looks like Masada and also has a couple space/futuristic themed/sounding songs.
2. More likely (and probably brought up before) Masada is a tribute to Michael Jackson and has nothing to do with any emotional trauma Mado suffered from. His full name has Michael in in (Sentimental Komuro Michael Sekemoto Dada-Sensei.) Also, this:

Ok, adding MOAR to the Savage Garden theory.
Masada was a depressed and insecure man. He fell in love with Mado (Ooh I want you, I don't know if I need you but ooh I'd die to find out) and promised her everything, aka, a trip "To the Moon and Back."
Somewhere along the way, he realized Mado was just as pathetic as he was and decided to leave her (When you wake up I won't be found, 'Cause I know baby, I know you're the nervous kind, With so much going on in your mind)
To Mado, her world came crashing down because she was in love. The ship going down is her world crashing down and him remaining in the ship is him abandoning her. Mas-San is her feelings.
Maybe she kills him. Maybe the ship is them going down together. Maybe she's in a perpetual coma dream because after she killed him, she tried to kill herself but failed. Maybe she's reliving her memory of him through an Australian pop group.
I don't know but MY DRUNKEN THEORIES ARE AMAZING FUCK OFF.

My brother had never heard of Yume Nikki, and I showed it to him, and he just assumed that Kikiyama was a fake name for a girl.
It's a pretty girly game, after all
