Sunsoft is revered for the great console video game bgm they produced in the 80s and 90s, but from what I could find, they produced just one PC-98 game: Photo Genic. It's not even listed on its wikipedia page. The problem is that all of the music is boring, samey shit for the most part. Why? Is it just me? Am I going crazy? None of this adds up. Please give me a second opinion.

I mean, just listen to Herbereke and Gimmick for comparison. You don't even know how disappointed I am.

Let me guess, you didn't try the japanese article, did you?
Never trust the english crap, they hardly have all the information.

As for your question, my guess is that the problem lies in the composer rather than in the company. I have Photogenic somewhere around and I'll check later who did it.
Also, the sound generator of sega is closer to PC-98, since they're practically from the same family (YM2203/YM2608 and YM2612). Here you have music produced by sunsoft in FM-synthesis and it doesn't sound like anything in photogenic (ergo, I think the composers aren't the same people).

You were right about the English page being lacking.
https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%83%95%E3%82%A9%E3%83%88%E3%82%B8%E3%82%A7%E3%83%8B%E3%83%83%E3%82%AF_(%E3%82%B2%E3%83%BC%E3%83%A0)
That's pretty pathetic.
The page doesn't say who composed it. I'm also confused about the developer being different from the, "selling agent". Gimmick was both developed and sold by Sunsoft. I've never heard of, "ゼロシステム", before.
I imagine that since Sunsoft didn't actually develop the game apparently, they didn't use one of their composers(did they have in-house composers?) Do you have any idea why they put someone mediocre on this game or why they would even make this kind of weird arrangement? Maybe ゼロシステム is a subsidiary of Sunsoft?

I thought I had Photogenic on my PC-98 collection, but it wasn't. I suppose I'll try to go hunt it on the dark side of the japanese web later, but as of now I really don't feel like wasting all that energy on it.
Anyway, both gimmic and hebereke are from before 1995 (the golden age of sunsoft) while Photogenic is from 1997 and distributed by zero, so the composer is probably from their team.

>Do you have any idea why they put someone mediocre on this game or why they would even make this kind of weird arrangement?

Uh, that's actually fairly common. Way too common. If you want an easy example, Kadokawa asked playism (or whoever they were in the end) to develop YNDD. Symphonic Rain was developed by kuronekosan team even though it's a product made by Kogado. And we could go on and on; they just provide a budget and maybe direction, but leave the work at the hands of a smaller studio. I don't really know the background for such deals but my guess is that they do that to give smaller teams a chance to work and get experience in their business, plus the possibility of future partnerships in case of success.

Seems like a way to worsen your company's reputation. Associating with a sub-par product can't be a good thing. That seems inconsistent culturally. Maybe i'm missing something.
Anyway, please tell me more about this dark side of the Japanese web. Whenever I feel like checking something out, I always have to wade through the dirty waters of Chinese sites like emu999.net

Got the name: 渡辺寛太 [Watanabe Kanta]
Found it through Hoot's database and confirmed the kanji through this korean site:
http://pc98library.tistory.com/1542?category=377323 (A shame the .hdi file wasn't there)
Plus all other game OSTs composed by him:
https://www36.atwiki.jp/gmcomposer/pages/58.html#id_575050eb
Unfortunately, I haven't found anything related to Zero System nor their affiliation with either Watanabe-shi or Sunsoft. I couldn't find a download link for the game either. I suppose I'll go ask on Ben's forum later.

I have japanese knowledge so I just search through retro-computer related sites until I hit a batch torrent or a direct link. Sometimes it can take hours; it depends on how obscure the game is.

No need. I have waded through those filthy waters again and I have found it within like ten minutes. Hurrah. First link is straight download. Second is for reference.

Well, I've been messing around in the game. I've got no clue what's going on and I can barely work the menu, but I have to say, i'm slightly less underwhelmed with the music now. It's still really boring, but given this kind of context, it's par for the course. That's not to say that visual novels can't have good music. There's no doubt about that, but maybe most people's expectations are pretty low so some banal background noise will do for them. Since I can't actually play the game, the music is the only way I can actively appreciate it. The art is also really vibrant and refreshing compared to some of the more garish stuff.

Update:The only way to access emu999.net is with a vpn that includes mainland Chinese servers like flyvpn. To actually find anything you need to somehow go back and forth between google and the china internet sphere(i've just use my phone). emu999 has been around since at least 2005 and this might be the first time it's become permanently inaccessible. What a terrible time to be alive.

Does that site have fdi and hdi file downloads, because that's what i'm talking about. How is it that there's a great Chinese site for that, but not a Japanese one? Are their copyright laws really that strong?

No, only radio and reviews.

>Are their copyright laws really that strong?

Depends on the company. Some are uptight assholes, and others are completely dead so their games are practically abandonware.

>How is it that there's a great Chinese site for that, but not a Japanese one?

Japanese are smart and keep neat, simple torrents that appear here and there, or collections organized by titles and companies. I don't want to spread them openly just in case they get too much attention, so of you're interested send a message to the only mail address in the "about" of our scans page and I'll send you the biggest I currently have here.

What this guy said, Sunsoft really lost their touch during the 16-bit era and kept trying to tap into the "anthropomorphic animal mascot platformer" fad with Aero the Acrobat and kept making shitty licensed games. Really the only games they've made after that were anything beyond decent were their fighting games. Sucks how they're just making garbage mobile games now.

>Aero the Acrobat

if I remember correctly that wasn't really made by Sunsoft. But TRAG: Mission of Mercy was, for the Playstation, and it was PRETTY dire.
