What are your favourite books from your country?

Example: "Capitães da Areia" (Captains of the Sands) is my favorite brazilian book, it's a masterpiece from Jorge Amado. So, what are yours?

You liked “Capitães da areia”? I stopped reading it after around 10 pages or so. I just couldn’t read it more. I don’t remember exactly what made me stop, but when I was reading it I was around the same age as the kids in the book and the story was annoying me a lot. I’m curious, why do you like it so much?

The first chapter is kind of boring, but as you read it becomes more and more interesting, i recommend you giving another try.

This one is pretty much the greatest thing Colombia has ever produced.
I think the only thing that comes close is La Vorágine by José Eustasio Rivera and other novels by Garcia Marquez.

Le Balene Restino Sedute (Whales Please Sit Down) by Alessandro Bergonzoni. It's really good, sort of a non-sequitur writing experiment: instead of following logic, each 'event' is dictated by the final word of the previous.
Corpo (Body) by Tiziano Scarpa. A series of dialogues between the author and his various body parts.

The Great Gatsby. It's so god damn American and shows how bad that American culture can be.

My problem with Machado de Assis is that his books only gets interesting halfway through, like Dom Casmurro. Because of that, i prefer his tales.
