 No.1125

I have a confession as an aspiring writer.

I can't write characters.

I have experience with poems and blog-type write-ups, and I want to write a real story. I have many ideas about stories to write that are very moving to me, and that I sincerely want to pursue them and am trying to do so, but it's very difficult because my creative powers have not been able to create vivid and original characters. I have a lot of creative ideas, but the most important thing I think is the people in the story, they're what lend substance to the dramatic and aesthetic elements of the story, and when I try I just come up dry.

I had the thought last night that if you have the characters in your mind, the story and the world will flow from there. But I don't know if people just think of a character out of the blue or if they arise from the story.

Anyone else have these experiences? Trying to figure out how to approach fleshing out a story and fleshing out characters.
