Dragon Ball was my first. I watched pretty much everything on Toonami when I was little.
Zatch Bell was when I really started using the term anime and I started seeking stuff out on the internet and stuff.
No.169
One of those Toonami shows. Either Gundam, Sailor Moon, or Dragonball.
No.171

because mechas
most of the cartoons I watched as a child were made in japan and I didn't realize it until later
No.173
>>171I loved Macross. I hated the other shows they lumped in with Robotech just because they weren't Macross.
Besides, I thought Voltron was the best super mecha show at the time.
I watched Speed Racer and Sailor Moon too but I wasn't crazy about them.
No.175
>>173OH! I remember watching Voltron. I don't know if you can really call it an anime though. Robotech/Macross is awesome. And I remember watching speed racer all the time, that may have been the first anime I ever watched.
No.176
I used to tune into Dragonball Z every once in a while when I was a kid, but the first anime I ever sat down and watch all the way through, as much as I hate to admit it, was Death Note. I have since moved on to shows like Azumanga Daioh and Madoka.
No.180
FLCL was the first anime I ever watched. I didn't even watch any dragonball/yuyuhakusho or toonami-esque stuff as a kid.
Fell in love with FLCL, and kind of snowballed into an obsession from there. I think lucky star and rozen maiden were the next couple anime's I watched after FLCL.
No.181
>>173agreed I loved voltron too but it hasn't aged well. I still have the toy that shoots the lion heads/hands but one of them went missing years ago along with the wings and the sword
my brother had the robotech toys, he had a foot tall fully transforming one of rick hunter's veritech. I wanted it so bad that I considered fratricide more than once. I can't even find a picture of one on google images, can't imagine what it must be worth now
No.182
>>181I had this as a kid which was cool but a piece of junk. A veritech would have been amazing if it transformed and everything.
I could probably still enjoy Voltron if I was a kid who watched mindless action cartoons again. I think it's just not intended to capture the attention of adult audiences. My memories would probably be much better than if I watched it again today. I watched Macross again as an adult and it was even better since I could understand all the political stuff this time around.

Many 70's era Toei full-length anime. I was very young, so don't ask me what exactly were those (although I clearly remember the iconic Puss 'n Boots/Nagagutsu wo Haita Neko).
And Dragon Ball, of course.
Also, a bit of Sailor Moon. It was aired just before Dragon Ball, so I watched it sometimes, but it was "too girly" for me, and didn't make sense sometimes. I found out later that this was because they aired the localized version of the infamously retarded US dubbed/censored/remastered series here.
Thankfully, Dragon Ball was all JDM (dubbed, but directly from the original, and nothing else had been changed).

>>182I remember that toy. You know they started reissuing Robotech toys in the 90's for a minute? One of them was a zentraedi pod like that. There was a western mecha cartoon on then called Exosquad (which was my favorite) and for some reason they made a Robotech series. No veritechs though as far as I remember. I got an invid mecha and a couple others back then.
Jesus mother fuck I love mecha toys.
No.186
>>185If I were rich enough to be a buyfag I'd have a shelf full of mecha figs.
I know mecha fans look down on CGI compared to drawn animation but when I was a kid Zoids blew my mind. I had one of the models and it was like two things I love combined: mecha and LEGO sets. That shit was brilliant as far as marketing to kids goes, like they read my mind.

>>187the interesting thing about tenchi is that it started out as these doujin-novels and nowadays when you talk to the writers and creators they each have their individual ideas of what they've created as canon and not.
interesting beginnings, and the series still continues today.

Pokemon. No seriously, it all started from there. I wanted to watch more shows like it, and than later got to Toonami, Adult Swim, and Shonen Jump, and started downloading anime people suggested to me on the internet and that I read about in Jump, as well as getting the uncut versions of some anime.
Than I met this one guy who flipped me on my ass when it came to anime and I've never been the same since seeing his room.

Bought ghost in the shell on vhs in 96 via some kind of mail-order. I miss those days without internet :( "Sounds cool - must have!"

So my first anime didn't really get me sucked into all that anime biz, but that's because my first anime was Studio ghibli's Spirited away, followed by Grave of the fireflies. Not to say they were bad or anything, because they were masterpieces. But it led me to being mildly interested in anime, and accepting of it.
I guess that I have to say it wasn't just one anime that got me sucked in. It went as such. Yugioh/Pokemon->Inu-Yasha/YuYu Hakusho->Haibane Renmei->Naruto (But now I don't really like it much at all, sorry to those who love it still)->FLCL->Berserk.
You know whats funny about this post? Every anime I listed was marked as a misspelled work, except of course for Berserk, but also Naruto for some reason
However, after that time period, my family went homeless and I lost touch with anime. What actually got me back in was when my cousin Nate introduced me to Mirai Nikki, then simultaneously watching Berserk again. But then the real roll started when I started hanging out with new otaku friends, some of whom browse this board. They turned me on to the Monogatari series, I started browsing /a/ and found many more animes to watch. My favorites are Berserk, Kyousougiga, Monogatari, FLCL, Cromartie High, and Sayonara Zetsunou Sensei.
…So guys, whats coming up this next season?
