When you were first playing the game, what did you think it was about?

I honestly remember thinking that there was a morality system in the game. What I mean is, I thought that by killing more NPCs with the knife effect, Madotsuki would have eventually fell into some kind of dream that you couldn't wake up from. Then, I thought that the only way to rid yourself of your sins was to use the yen that you got for killing NPCs at a vending machine.

I genuinely thought that. Then, a couple hours later, I realized that nothing was happening, so I just stopped thinking that there was a morality system.

Anyone else have any other experience like this? I'd love to hear it if so.

That seems like an oddly specific assumption. Any idea why you thought that?

I'll admit it, I discovered this game thanks to the RPGMaker horror craze of 2012. Everyone said it was JUST LIKE Ib/The Witch's House/whatever so I went in expecting characters, dialogue, puzzles and a concrete story.

Needles to say, having these expectations kind of ruined the first impression of the game for me, as I spent most of my playthrough trying to figure out what kind of puzzle I could solve with the few effects that I'd gathered, or impatiently waiting for a dialogue box to pop out, instead of actually slowing down and taking in the atmosphere. Disappointing.

I have replayed the game many times since then and have come to enjoy it, but it's a little sad that I'll never get a pure, novel experience of it (unless I harm my head in some way, I guess).

This is probably one of the reasons why I enjoyed .flow more, since with that game I knew the sort of gameplay to expect right away.

I thought Madotsuki was gay (and I still kinda do but I'm not stiff about it). The male/female bathroom thing and the vaguely romantic music in Poniko's room lead me to that conclusion.

I thought Tokuto and the sexual posters in the mall were about puberty (since he's vaguely tampon-shaped and leaking blood from his head).

I thought the big "point" the game was trying to convey was that some kind of vehicle crash caused Mado to become a shut-in. There are references to accidents everywhere. Shitai-san, Monoko and the Stoplight effect, Masada's ship, the smoking mechanical thing in Mars-san's room, the train randomly in the middle of the forest. I don't think it's the main take-away anymore but I still think there's a connection.

If I remember correctly, the knife effect was one of the first effects I got, and Yume Nikki was the first game that I played that doesn't really have an objective other than explore, so I didn't really have experience with this type of game before.

So, all of these thoughts about what would happen if I stabbed an NPC ran through my head, and then I did. I felt horrible, and I interpreted the screaming sound that NPCs you kill make as a cry for help, and that made me feel even worse.

That's the best way I can describe why I thought what I thought.

>stabbing NPCs

How did you through the room with all those disc dudes? Waiting patiently?

Because killing npcs feels out of place in the game, your brain might try to rationalize it in some way. As for being disappointed with the game, or projecting some kind of meaning to it that isn't there, that's due to some people's inability to take things at face value. They just gotta make the game about themself if nothing else is given to them.

Of course I didn't. I used the cat effect to get around.

Well I'll be damned.

She always looked more like a mouse than a cat imo.
