I thought of doing that some time ago but i don't really think one should touch the Yume Nikki legacy, same goes for any fangame (imagine the shitstorm if someone made a LCDDem+) for various reasons that i can explain in a followup post.

Yume 2kki is pretty much remixed Yume Nikki anyways, except it still uses RPGmaker2k

Second if all, Yume Nikki was a fun time investment project, he did what he wanted to with the game until real life kept him too busy to continue working on the game.

This isn't a lisenced product or franchise so he didn't have ajy interest in continuing it so he just abandoned it. Third if all he has other priorities now, since years actually, since he actually has a family of his own.

This was just a fun and innocent project he did as a young adult and while he was getting a degree or whatever it's called in japan. The reason there is no story in Yume Nikki is because he didn't want to bother with one, he had ideas for bizzare and obscure environments but not for a plot if sorts. Many ideas were taken from a fan made MOTHER project he thought of years before making Yume Nikki. He appreciates the fan games and dedicated community but has no time or reason to come back. He's moved on with his life because of adulthood. He's still around under another name on japanese websites but there's no point in returning because he'd be unable to prove his identity since he lost the password to his email.

I play .flow in EasyRPG for Android and this utility has fast forward button, but then I understood: this is cheating. The game is supposed to slowly push at your mind and to make you lose it, so when you skip areas quickly, you miss some part of the game. And even using the speed effect limits you, because you miss the possibility to play while wearing other effects.

The whole appeal of online games is user to user interactivity and things never being the same, which are both counter intuitive to making something related to yn. Yume Nikki 3-d already exists, so why not play that or the original instead? I don't know much about worlds, but i'm assuming that you can talk to other players? Why talk there when you could talk on ubuu? Yume Nikki 3-d does that kind of lazy thing where the pixel dimensions are just transposed onto a 3-d environment. I'd much rather see a fully 3-d(polygons), n-64 style yume nikki version. I'm surprised that nobody has thought of that yet.

Oh, no doubt people have thought about it. But considering the average age of the people who play Yume Nikki is below 18, I doubt any of such potential "developers" could even handle pseudo-3D, and let's not even mention anything remotely close to actual 3D with polygon models and all the physics a 3D environment involves. And those who actually could manage something like that aren't going to waste their time for free on something only a bunch of kids will play anyway.

A more likely thing that would happen is a mod of a PC game. The closest game that is like Super Mario 64 on the PC is the newly release A Hat in Time, which features mod support.

Another game that could be fun to mod would be Skyrim or maybe even Doom. Hell, I would accept a Yume Nikki themed Sonic rom hack. Or maybe a Sonic Generations mod with normal Madotsuki and chibi Madotsuki but that all kinda goes against the general feel of YN.

Games like skyrim wouldn't work because a lot of the appeal of Yume Nikki is its surrealism. A realistic art style would totally shatter that. The sonic generations idea is terrible and you should feel bad for coming up with it. Mario 64 already has a kind of eerie vibe to it and it's cartoonish art style is a perfect fit for yn.

To start off, unless Skyrim is not super moddable, I'd imagine you could make it more cartoony if you wanted to. And the Sonic Generations idea might be silly, yes, but it was a plausible one as well. It's not like I said, "Let's put Madotsuki in Senran Kagura!!"

Nintendo games tend to be pretty hard to mod, even popular games are kinda hard to do. The general point is that PC games being able to be modded fairly easily and can reach a ton of people too. But I will grant it to you Mario 64 is kinda eerie as you said.

Another advantage of mario 64 over skyrim is that a lot of the assets, like the snow, piano and grass, are already perfect. Everything would have to be changed in skyrim. Mario 64 is also fits better because it's kind of, "primitive", in a simmilar way to Yume Nikki. They both feel like something from the past. I really don't know how the total workload would compare. Either way I don't think anybody is going to step up to the plate.
