Introducing New Irene:
Though I may not have worked on TLG in quite some time, there are changes planned! The most important is her sprite; I decided to depart from the typical Madotsuki sprite and use my own style, with the body and height parameters still based off of Mado’s.
Since Irene is in a mirror world and not a dream world, her eyes will be open! Her dress is also sleeveless now and she no longer has the high collar/scarf. She HAS, though, adopted black leggings and grey mary janes (I’ll draw out some concept art in a bit). I hope this is okay for those of you who have played and liked the first few versions of the game!

Yeah I know, departing from the YN style was a bit nerve-wracking since, you know, this is a yume nikki fan game and I personally have no qualms with other games who use the same sprite style, but I felt like I just needed to branch out. So far the people on tumblr are pretty okay with it!
And no, actually I plan on Irene talking, making observations, etc. But aside from the intro and some future scenes, she will be silent. I just, considering that she's entering a mirror world instead of exploring her dreams for instance, I'd want her to have some sort of personality about it rather than taking it as if it were normal, like Mado and Sabi and etc etc do.
I'm going for a more linear feel, but there will still be lots of exploration and etc!

Just letting the board know a new update is -very- close. There won't be new worlds, but there will be a lot of additions I think a lot of people might find interesting!
I haven't played this game before, but it looks like a likely candidate for review (well, after the next update.)
I'm really digging it so far. It's got a lot of atmospheric areas, as well as some ones that are bizarre (in a good way). It's really hard to find this kind of thing, but I'd like to mention it in terms of the Apartments and the Dark Room in 2kki, the City, Sugar Hole, Pipes and Phone Poles, and Apartments in .flow.
As far as the worlds and exploration goes, it has a whole big lump of the stuff I like (interesting, realized worlds). My favourites so far are the complex where she lives and the gameboy world, which looks like something I'd have pre-sleep dreams about after playing lots of Pokemon. It's surreal and bizarre enough to make it interesting on its own; the edgewrapping actually helps cement this feeling into the area for me.

I. Honestly wasn't expecting that. I enjoyed this game before, and now… it's just improved like tenfold.
I don't know what I was expecting, but wow. That opening. Her actually having a nice little story. ALL THE REFERENCES IN THE PAINTINGS AND GRAVEYARD.
The Graveyard makes me worried. I still haven't figured out what that button does.
But yes, three effects in so far. Loving it. Still some glitches here and there, I think you've noticed them by now. Namely, the tinting not changing when you 'wake up' prematurely which I think can be fixed by having an event just make the bedroom have a constant tint or something. That, and whenever the System menu thing changes, like in the Gameboy world.
But man I am loving the story (was reminded of May at first), the atmosphere, the mirror, the amusing snark from Irene whenever she inspects something because I literally inspect everything I can find. None of the fauna have responded back to me so far sadly.
But yes just. Just wow I love it.
Stop making me feel bad about procrastinating on ever releasing my own fangame nyehhh.

The only other game I know of that went for a similar feel was May, as you said, and really it was that game that helped me realize what I wanted to do with TLG. And I like the game a lot, I actually like it more than the previous version, because before everything was so confusing (I got lost very easily). In the new version everything is interactive and stuff. Good job, even though the ominous feeling that YN fangames usually have was lost a little in this version, it makes up for it in cuteness.

This game feeds in unearthly urge to inspect everything. I can't wait to to find that crowbar now. I was a little leery of text but seeing it in action is absolutely lovely. I've only got as far as getting the roller-blades again but I'm incredibly impressed all over again.
Mishka, I haven't read your whole review of The Looking Glass (cus I try to avoid spoilers about anything
when I can), but that bit about Irene having observations for almost every object sounds like a dialogue/text hunter's dream. (@_@)

I got it running on Linux, so it would probably work on a Mac, too. I did have some problems, which I'm not sure if they're the game or my system. The game is incredibly laggy in Irene's bedroom, there's no sound (that's probably me), and after I used the Yeti effect, Irene became stuck facing in the same direction.
Now, the bug report's outta the way, I love the game so far. I like that I can look at things and Irene has something to say about them. I like that Irene talks, in general. I like the art in the intro. I expect great things from the finished game. Keep up the good work!

This dialogue seems cumbersome to me. I think it would be better if she said something like, "You seem fine, but you should get some rest."

Since I'm posting, I'll just take the time to say; "THIS GAME IS AWESOOOOME!!!".
I finally got to play it a couple of weeks ago, and it was really something. I'm hoping for more "observations" in future updates; I just love
those observations. X3
was the crowbar freezing one of the glitches that's supposed to be fixed? Cause I noticed that still happening at spots. I ended up testing a bit more this time though, so results of that below.
Also, one thing to note here is that when I say "freeze", I don't mean the whole game freezing. It's just being unable to move Irene or open the menu.
First, I tried killing an enemy in the debug room, then tried using the door back to Irene's room, which made the game freeze.
Second, I tried killing an NPC inside one of the apartment rooms, then tried exiting through the door, which made the game freeze. I then reloaded and returned, then killed the NPC a second time, but this time, I exited by pushing '9' to wake up, which ended up working fine, without any freeze or other issues.
I then tried killing an NPC in the neon world, then exiting the door back to the nexus, which worked perfectly fine.
Lastly, I went to the snow world, found the Yeti, killed it, then went back to the nexus door and exited, which also worked fine.
When testing all this, I also noticed that if I switched to the rollerblades after killing an NPC, then that'll also cause a freeze. Even if you switch effects multiple times before switching to the rollerblades, it still seems to happen, though if you transition to a different screen first, then switching will no longer freeze you. I also found out that while in that frozen state, pushing the 9 key to wake up still works to teleport you, and that things went back to normal after doing so.
This made me wonder if pushing 9 to teleport also worked during those door freezes, so I tried at the apartments, and it ended up half-working. Basically what happened was that I killed the NPC, opened the door and froze, then pushed 9 to teleport, and this caused the teleport animation to play, but instead of teleporting, I went through the door, and was unfrozen. Shortly after going through the door, the 'screen blur' effect from teleporting ended up displaying, but I didn't actually telport. I also noticed that If I went back to one of the NPCs in an apartment and killed them right after that and tried exiting, then the freeze no longer happened for some reason.
Well, that's all I've got. I know it's kinda long, but maybe it'll be helpful in figuring out what the cause of these freezes is.

I can honestly say I have no idea why it freezes like that. I took out killing in the apartment complex but knowing that the rollerblades make it freeze too really confuses me.
I do know that the glitch works on maps with teleports that move the player around the map, instead of moving to a new area. The apartment complex is all one big map. All I can think of is maybe the event is still "running" when the character is killed, which is why the game freezes when switching to other events.
The funny thing is that the killing event in the mansion works just fine; Irene does not freeze, rollerblades or teleporting, so perhaps there's something in that code that can help with this other situation.
Thanks for being really in depth about it. I was hoping simply taking out the killing would solve it and to be honest reading that it still didn't upset me a lot! But you've made me start thinking about it seriously and perhaps there IS a solution and I'll geton that as quickly as possible. Thank you! :)
Since most of the changes between this version and the last weren't all that big, you could -probably- copy and paste your save files from the last version into the new version without any issues. Doing so has caused no problems for me so far. RPGmaker savefiles are the files named "Save01.lsd" "Save02.lsd" and so on.>>3737

Ok, I didn't know exactly where to put this so it'll just stay in my thread; I am planning on making a small side game called Annalise. I also plan on using madotsuki sprites because I think it'll fit better with what I'm trying to do.
It's not going to be very huge or anything, it's more of an experimental little thing really. Just thought of letting /fg/ know about it.
Sounds interesting. I'm still looking forward to the next version of The Looking Glass, buy I'm definitely looking forward to this "experiment" too.

I haven't made any good TLG art as of late so here have this thing I drew a bit ago instead.
Just a quick update to reassure everyone that yes the game is still being worked on and many new things are being added on. Probably the best thing out of what I've done so far is finally add a "Get Effect" box instead of the massive message box haha.
Other things have been added such as effect animations, new sprites, some map color palette changes, new areas to explore and interact with, computer interactivity, etc!
When I finally get some work done on the new MAIN worlds I plan on adding is when an update should be coming. I'll let everyone know when that time is. :)

Hello, just dropping in to show what Irene's cybot effect looks like: it's modified from Marina Liteyears' design in the Mischief Makers game since her thighs make no sense to me.
In other news, production is going very well and I picked up a couple music volunteers and an artist friend of mine to help as well. A major milestone was covered last night so development should be picking up the pace!

I’m aiming for some time this week. I still have OCD about certain things but I really just need to ship this off to you guys. The longer I wait the worse I feel about leaving you all in the dark and the longer it takes for me to finish stuff, so if I get a quick update out I think that’ll ease my mind for a bit and I’ll be able to focus more!

Haven't tried the latest bug fixes, but some things I've noticed other than the shift stuff:
-Glowstick effect remains permanent until leaving mirror.
-Some really weird glitch happened to me where the Rollerblades remained in effect, keeping the same speed. Bicycle or Rollerblades again make Irene even faster.
-Not sure if related to the glitch above, but when I kill too many shadow NPCs in the town, I freeze and cannot do anything but wake up. Then when messing with the bike, I accidentally activated sticky keys, it happened, and trying to wake up would just make a negative noise, causing me to just close the game. Really weird. Just noticed it was mentioned before too, so, huh.
-The Trench menu vanished after trying it out once.
Other than that it seems really solid. Noticed a lot of Homestuck references this time, interesting touch. Also I love what you did with the Gameboy Pokemon world so much. Though getting access to the long hair did make me return to normal, not sure if that was fixed in the shift update or not.
Also when I got to the end of the sewer area I was just like… what. That part, oh god.
ok here's the sitch on what i've done so far:
-since the glowstick messes with screen tinting, and some of the areas still do screen tinting, and i was more concerned about those than others, it won't return to normal unless you're in the ocean or the nexus, or unequipping it manually. this was laziness on my part so i will work on it now since i figured out the problem (but like i said was too lazy to fix it)
-i encountered that problem too sometimes during testing, but from what i had listed in the common event section, it shouldn't logically be happening, and would not repeat itself if i actively tried to get it to happen again. not too sure what that is just yet
-there might be some shadow npcs left over that i didn't fix with the crowbar event. laziness again, my bad, i will fix them all shortly
-the bike effect cannot 9 out but you can unequip it to do so
-found the variable problem and fixed it
-the long hair effect was added in on last notice so i completely forgot about that, thank you for bringing it up, i've fixed it
i'll go ahead and tend to these bugs and such! best to squash them out now rather than later

I read on TLG's tumblr something about going inside his room during the faceless event. My exact sentiments going in were "nopenopenopenopeFUCK!" especially when pic happened
but I enjoy what happened after this event. Is this the kind of linearity you were talking about some time before?

Yes, that is what I was talking about! It's an example of how I plan on moving the story along without inhibiting people from exploring.
Also lol that pesky panda effect. In the original she carried around her panda plush, yes, but I removed it back then since I didn't know how to code it correctly. I do now so I COULD put it back but I don't know if I want to haha.

OK, I haven't played the new version that much yet, but I wanted to say that I really like the Pokemon world. And Irene's Pokesprite is adorable.

Okay, here are the bugs I found in the v0.05 bug fix 2:
1. Lisa dialogue: "But to be on the safe side, I'm going to a
you to come back tommorow ok?". I should be "ask you to come back";
it must have gotten cut off somehow.
2. Pic#1, Passability glitch outside school entrance.
3. Same area as 2, you can walk below the trees (wasn't like that in version 0.04).
4. Pic#2, House World, library - one spot on a shelf is missing the dialogue box (I don't think it's supposed to).
5. Pic#3, Apartment World - room 207 teleports you to the outside of room 202; the door for 207 remains open after this too, if you go back to check it.
6. You can obtain infinite flashlight effects from the flashlight get.
7. Effect glitch where Irene's sprite doesn't change back to normal when going through the big mirror, if you have an effect equipped (not sure if it's every effect).
8. Apartment World - If you use the peek hole for Room 202 (Behind The Walls) for a second time before leaving, Irene still asks if the Faceless Man can see her, even though he is clearly gone.
9. Apartment World - The door to exit area 1A doesn't have an animation for opening (same hall where room 202 is).
10. Sewers - When you leave the End of the sewers, the lights will be on (even without the flashlight) in the next room until you walk to the tile before the first light.
11. House World - Child Ghost on the right side of mansion says "no bit deal" (probably supposed to be "no big deal").
12. Switching from the Rollerblades (or Bike) to the White Queen will glitch your speed; if you keep switching them, you can keep getting faster. The only way to reset your speed is to examine the <3.txt on Irene's computer.
13. After the part where Vincent talks to Irene outside the school, if you go back into the school and come out, the event will happen again.
14. When you buy the bike effect, you receive 2 rather than 1.
note: I'm not sure if these are only happening on my computer or not, since no one else has mentioned them yet.
15. Apartment World - For some reason, the dark areas in the basement (starting at Basement A) are a little laggy, unless you turn on your flashlight. This seems to be the case for all areas where you need the flashlight; except the sewers, where it's only if you equip the flashlight and have it turned off.
16. Pokeymans World is extremely laggy. I assume the reason is the same as in another fangame (Mewn), and if it is, I know how to fix it myself (if this is only happening to me; nobody else mentioned it in the Mewn thread). The problem is, I can't seem to find which event causes the Game Boy Color border to appear on screen.
Anyways, enjoyable as always. From what I could see in Pokeymans world, I think an entire horror game should be made in that style; It's really interesting, not to mention nostalgic, but it also has an unsettling feeling to it.
Also, story progression is something I'm looking forward to in the game overall.
Thank you for such a good list! I tackled all of the problems and I am concerned about the lag issues as well.
It has to do with the border in the pokemon world and the "light" in the dark areas being a continually overlaid picture.
I'm not quite sure how to fix them quite yet, as in if running a parallel process is the problem or not. Might have to reroute flashlight interaction to a common event slot too, hm…
So, about the GBC border for Pokeymans World, I made a post before about one way to fix it. The post was >>3782 . Check it out and see if it helps.
I'm not sure if something similar would work for the flashlight's light though.
You can only acquire the Cybot effect from the green haired robot woman in the Apartments if she is standing and walking around, kind of like Oreko in .flow.
She can be found either in the lobby or in her room on the first floor, 106.

The Alice effect is cosmetic right now, but it has a much bigger purpose! So until it is coded right, it stays in the Debug room only! Unfortunately, you cannot find the effect in-game.
If you want it, you can get it, and you can wear it just fine! But it is not "official".
Also, you need 1000$ to buy the bike. You get money by killing NPCs.

Here's a couple more glitches (if you haven't found them yet):
- 1. (left pic) I'm not sure if this is intended at all, but the Octopus effect seems to be able to bypass a lot of tiles that you shouldn't be able to walk on. Pictured is just one area that only the Octopus effect can go. I haven't checked everywhere, but it seems this "glitch" may be exclusive to the sewers (including the entrance, where there are lots of things to climb over with the Octopus effect).
- 2. (right pic) Another thing about the Octopus effect, is that these pipes appear to be in front of Irene, rather than behind her. Again, apparently only in the Octopus effect. I don't know if those are the only things that are like this.
I think these passability glitches probably have something to do with the "[Octo]" tilesets.>>5462
Looking at the game in RPG Maker: it doesn't appear that there is anything else to see in that area at the moment (other than the little bit of text you get).
yeah i am planning on doing more with it haha, i'm planning on doing more with about everything! but recently i lost all of my work files for the game so production is gonna be super slow again.

I noticed a bug.
The door in front of Irene was barricaded, I clicked it 4-5 times, left the room and came back, bam, the barricade was gone.
Just downloaded, and I'm liking this so far. Keep up the good work!

I just realized that depending on the door you go through, different door is barricaded. Glorious.

It seems that the rollerblade stacking stops at about 5 times.
I'm lazy so I'm not going to upload it on youtube, but to give some idea, Irene can run the street in picture related in 5 seconds.

I second these.
There are more tiles that you can walk on with the octopus effect.
You can also access the door from the wall.
You can walk everywhere in the water.

After the first encounter with the blonde tall guy, back in the school, I had Long Hair effect available for some reason.
When equipping you lost your school uniform and got your ordinary clothes on.
When disabling Long Hair effect you don't get the uniform back.
Somewhere in this thread was mentioned that you receive 2 bikes instead of one. This also happened.

I can't recreate that. I simply used the effect button and it transformed into the regular sprite sitting down.

No there indeed isn't anything wrong with it and I appreciate the enthusiasm to bug report!
I'm aware of most of these issues, though I guess I should have made it clear that I am about 90% more active on the devblog than here and I have talked to tons of people pointing out bugs in the game. (since tumblr is generally filled with more receptive people than uboa ever is)
But still! Thank you very much for all of your help and I'll be sure to double check if the bugs are still there.

I've been updating the tumblr, but I decided I should make an official post here since uboa is where this game started.
TLG is getting a major remake. This is a screenshot of the most recent changes, with a lot more to go. A lot of things have changed and still need to be changed. I'm not sure if the end result will be accepted as a fangame anymore, either. Its name will change and there's just a lot that will be different. I will say that there won't be a nexus anymore, and I'm not even sure if it will have effects. It'll be very different and I think it's up to uboa and everyone in general where they think the game should go.
However I will keep the old version up for everyone to download, I'm just giving everyone a heads up about the direction the game is going in.
Why would it be up to "everyone in general" how your game will turn out?
Taking cues from others is fine, but I wouldn't listen too much to other people if I were you.
I liked the old faces more. These look like something from Cartoon Network.
By where the game goes, I meant if the thread will stay in fg or move to other games or something.
Also I really appreciate that you liked the old talksprites! However they were in dire need of an upgrade. They still reflect some of the old style, , especially in the eyes, but are much cleaner and expressive now, which is very important for what I'm going to do with the game.
