This actually sounds pretty damn neat so far, I like it!
I like the introduction of concrete environments (the Nexus being the maintenance room of an old arcade as opposed to a nondescript room solely for the purpose of ambiance,) I know it's been done in a couple other fan games-The Other Line comes to mind-but I really like this concept.

Here's the arcade maintenance room/ nexus. Theres going to bee a metal door in the middle section wall.
At the beginning thereare 3 functioning dorrways, and after an event the 4th game's screen stops being static and starts acting as the 4th doorway. I'm also thinking about making the arcade down the street from the school. The cones dissapear once you enter the nexus from the arcade near the school. Maybe.

Here's what you have to make sure of:
1. Have the event on an impassable tile
2. Make sure it's the same layer as the player (If it's below you and on a tile you're supposed to walk on, it won't work properly)
3. This one's obvious: make sure that there's conditions based on the direction you're facing when you touch it.

I've also changed the giant mural maze to a small hallway, and changed the illumination/flower world to a smaller size. I also want to announce that the forest world is easily the largest any place will get. All of my worlds will be about 50x50, unless their easily navigable. I feel that this makes the game much more tolerable because it is easier to create and navigate.

It may seem like just another YN-like exploration game, but it has my interest none the less.
I like a lot of the settings. There are quite a few bugs though (I think).
> glitches
I can't remember which one, but there was a problem with one of the diagonal paths in the "Rainy garden" area. I got stuck when I was walking down one. I'm not sure what the problem is.
There are also a few areas where either, once you enter you can't go back, or, you can't enter things which appear to be entrances.
I'm not sure if any of them are intentional but this is them:
- Librarium F1: The bottom right, the top of the staircase
- Librarium F1 rooms: there are two rooms with no exits on the bottom half of the map.
- Space crossroads: the entrance/exit in the upper left is there, but I think you can move 1 tile above it; thus, I didn't realize there was an entrance.
also, some passibility glitches:
- Librarium: You seem to be able to walk through the vertical bookcases.
- Murals: You can go behind the "desk" where the character who changes the system menu is. Plus, if you press the action while standing next to the character, the game pretty much freezes.
There may be more I'm forgetting.

Just a short comment on the video:
The effect change sound is pretty loud and sounds cut off.
The general music is EXTREMELY loud. You should be able to hear the footsteps quite clearly. (a good followup joke to this would be: "THEN LETS MAKE THE FOOTSTEPS EVEN LOUDER!!")
Having the music in 1 area be only on 1 ear is very annoying btw. But if it's an "artistic decision" so be it.
I'm a bit disappointed with the sunset area music too.
Okay, enough about the music.
The TV event seems to lag. Is that the case?
The areas are designed well, other than the fact that the tilesets seem a bit dissonant from each other. The sand zone, the are around 2:30 (why are some tiles outlined while others aren't?) and most glaringly obvious is the underground train station at around 4:58 (the entrance feels cut together, the line before the tracks feels entirely out of place)
With all that said, I'm really liking this, and that is, in fact, why I'm criticizing it so much. I want it to be GOOD.
…Fuck, that wasn't a short comment at all, was it.
No.4257
>>4248Okay, I made some of the music a little less loud. It didn't really seem that loud in my headphones but meh. I also fixed the issue with the subway station. If you don't like the music, consult my music guy. It seems that he's found his way onto uboachan, so I guess you just have to take it up with him. I've fixed everything you've pointed out, and now its time for more fixes. I appreciate the critique.

Hey, I've been considering adding dialogue to the game. What do you think? It won't be normaltext at the bottom of the screen, but text w/ a picture, like in Persona (pic related)
Also i think i might implement a notoriety meter, as seen in many different RPGs. Depending on what you reply with with either antagonize, help, and advise. Depending on which one of these is higher will determine how other NPCs react to you. Of course it will take a while to get the pictures done, but I'm much better at digital art than i am at pixel art, so it won't be too much of a hassle.
I might implememt a day-night system as well.

Hey. Just wanna add a small update. Graphic wise, and game wise. These three screenshots show the various emotions and choices Scott can choose while in a conversation. A positive conversation adds 5 Good points to Scott's meter. And a negative one adds 5 Evil points. Depending on the amount of points you have will affect how NPC's will react to you. For example, if you have more than 30 Good points, NPC's will regard you as a hero, and if you have more than 30 Evil points, some NPCs will go as fas as to run away from you. You can check the amount of these points from the Skill toolbar in the menu. It will then show one of two options, "Wake up" and "Notoriety meter". Select the latter and it will show you how many of each points you have.
This also shows the changes I've made to Scott's character image.
Welp, This is the last update before i release version 0.00+, and I still have a lote to do. So, watch my ubuuchan thread for a bugtest release version!

Maria's sprite is also a Sabi recolour, I admit. I just saved the shoes.
I honestly didn't notice that Scott's was a Sabi edit, though.
No.4513
Just really quickly posting ideas before I continue working on homework.
Quests: Ive considered adding some quests to the game. Completion if the quests will result in monetary gain as well as more good/evil points depending on the quest. Some quests will even result in the gain of effects. You can check your quest progress from the journal in the item section of the menu.
Dream types: because all dreams aren't the same, Ove considered adding four dream types. A,B,C, and D. The dream type affects the content of the dream, with A-C being common (25/101 chance for each type a,b, and c to occur) and D being extremely rare (1/101).
EFFECTS:
Hansel: Scott dresses up as hansel from the fairy tale Hansel and Gretel. Pressing shift causes Scott to drop a breadcrump, which is used as a placeholder,
ALTERNATE: Sick: Scott catches a cold. 1/2 speed, and pressing shift causes Scott to puke, the throw-up is a placeholder.
Saber-toothed Tiger: Scott gains the attributes of a sabertoothed tiger. (Possibly recieved in a quest in which you have to settle a dispute between a clan of dogs and cats. Gained if you sided with the cat clan.)
Dire Wolf: Scott gains the attributes of a dire wolf (Gained if you sided with the dogs)
Sorry if I sounded too long wi NDEA or anything. I'm trying my best to explain all of this in the shortest amount of text as posible.
Go back to your fangirl-ness.

http://www.mediafire.com/?0hvq4vydcz3k53pThe bugtest version is up.
Important things:
You can access the debug room from the dream bedroom. This'll make testing easier.
And if there are any bugs (and I know there will be) please report them immediately!
No.4573
>>4565There are bugs.
xD
Most of them are passability glitches, but there are quite a few. I'll post all about it, once I'm done with my run-through of 0.00+.

File: 1331713229451.png (521.34 KB, 5120x768, Umbra-glitches.png)

I think I actually missed or forgot to mention some of these bugs in the past version. Anyways, here they are (pic very related, each corresponding number shows a picture of the glitch):
1. You can walk on some of those "sticks" in the Illuminati area; I'm fairly sure you shouldn't be able to.
2. If you enter the Stairwell entrance, exit and then go up, you will walk on the entrance. You can even walk over to those hexagonal prisms.
3. I'm not sure if you're supposed to be able to do this, but you can go inside this "boxed" area in Space World, if you walk into it from the bottom left.
4. You can walk on this part of an area in Photopaths (pp2), rather than Scott appearing behind it.
5. Almost the same as "4.", but in pp3.
6. In F3 of the Stairwell ("To Subway"), you can walk all the way to the end of the path at the top, and you will walk on nothing. There is another passability glitch around the bottom of the staircase in this map.
7. The glitch I mentioned in
>>4048, with the menu changing NPC in Mural, is still present in the game.
8. Still unable to exit librarium from the entrance/exit to Monokromatique.
9. In the Librarium, you can walk through the bottom bookcases(?) but not others (assuming you're supposed to be able to walk through/"between" them).
10. Same as "9.", but in another part of the Librarium.
11. Just a passability glitch around the
entrance to rainy forest.
12. Passability glitch in the rainy forest.
13. You can walk on this hole at the end of the well's sewer tunnel.
14. Another passability glitch in the rainy forest.
15. And another one. You may want to check the rainy forest of more of these (it seems to be a glitch magnet, heh).
16. A black tile that doesn't overlap Scott (when it should); there are several places around the rainy forest/park that have these non-overlapping black tiles (shown is the path to the park). Again, you may want to check out some things concerning the rainy forest maps.
More glitches, without pictures:
> save screen glitchI'm not sure if it's just my computer, but when I go to the save screen by going to bed, the screen gets ghosting and stuff if I move. I'm not sure why (it's fine when I'm loading though).
> Can't move in SubwayIf you go to the Subway from F3 in the stairwell ("to subway"), you get stuck. Plus, the exit warps you to same place, so you have to wake up to get out of there.
> mega speed upgradesTalking to Traveler with Gym Clothes equiped does not reset speed, and re-equiping Gym Clothes further increases speed.
> cancel = "BITE ME"I'm not sure if it's intentional, but pressing the cancel button when talking to Traveler chooses the [Ant.] option rather than the [Neu.] option.
> random music plays? At the bridge in rainy forest, if you take the exit to the left, some music will start playing (usually no music plays in the rainy forest). This music also plays when you go from the well to the park. Not sure if that's supposed to happen.
> not enough space to finish sentenceWhen you talk to Traveler while he is in the park, his dialog is incomplete.
I think that's everything I found.
In other news, I'm really liking Scott's personality so far (both his good and bad sides). And, I like the Traveler; he is adorable. =3

>>4669AAAAAH im so happy you like it! Your like, one of my Yume Nikki fangame idols! And as a little secret between you and me, theres a little brisge that connects the end of the forest maze to the beginning, but it only opens up once you've navagated it, meaning you only have to traverse the maze once.
Also does the game look pretty bug-free? I think I might add one or two more effects just for the bugtest room before I release version 0.00+

I really hope I can finish touching up some things and release version 0.00+, but before I finish it up, I want to know if this looks alright. I decided to add the rest of his apartment before I release it, but if it doesn't look good I'll just edit it more and release it with v.0.01
So, what do you think?

>>4713Yeah. The game was originally going to be themed around space but I've sorta worked away from that.
The shadow part is still relevant, though.
No.4715
>>4708Hm! A VERY nice design, I love it! And I have a thing for odd apartment floorplans haha.
Though, with the windows as they are now, there's a really weird perspective going on. The window by the couch shows a city skyline, but the window by the sink does not. It gives it a weird m.c. escher effect, like the kitchen it bent up towards the sky.
From that particular perspective it's somewhat difficult making skylines, especially when there's two windows in odd places like that. Just a little thing I noticed! Otherwise it looks great. :33
No.4717

Fixed it.
Also uploaded v.0.00+
I'm uploading the link here before I upload it anywhere else just in case there are any lingering bugs.

BUGFIX VERSION!
http://www.mediafire.com/?788fwammm12z0raIm sorry guys. School is really tough right now. I've literally been flooded with work. Plus I just got some weird sinus infection which resulted in multiple doctor visits and pills. But to make up for it I released a version that fixed several bugs present in the last one!
Plus Scott has a bathroom now.

I also mentioned the new version of Umbra on my blog after a quick run-through this afternoon.
http://mishkafaulken.com/2012/03/29/not-a-review-of-umbra/Spoiler-free, as always. I just talk about the elements (really more subjective stuff in this case, since the game's still in early development.)

No.5808
>>5807>>5807Under the impression of a certain reviewer's works, I won't hate on it.
His skull looks too long because of the way you drew hair. As lush as his hair may be, that amount of protrusion is unlikely. It helps to draw a head "bald", "applying" hair afterwards.
Other than that, I can't put my finger on what could be improved, maybe others will help you on the matter.
